Nepal captures ACC Trophy semi-final berth (from Times of India)

AFP [ WEDNESDAY, JULY 17, 2002 6:54:39 PM ]

SINGAPORE: Nepal claimed the remaining semi-final berth in the ACC Trophy cricket tournament here Wednesday, romping to a comfortable 124-run win over Kuwait, the only other contender for a place in the top four.

The semi-final line-up on Friday will see defending champions United Arab Emirates (UAE) play Hong Kong, the beaten finalists in the last tournament two years ago, while Nepal will play Malaysia.

Nepal captain Raju Khadku had no hesitation in batting first against Kuwait when he won the toss, and the side put on 288 for six in their 50 overs with Dipendra Chaudhary not out 80 and Mahaboob Alam scoring 60.

Kuwait in reply were bundled out for 164 in the 36th over. Waheed Iqbal top scored with 43, while Nepalese bowler Sanjam Regmi finished with three for 31.

Unbeaten UAE had an easy six wicket win over Qatar in their final pool match.

Qatar batting first made 158 for nine, with Armeen Uullah Khan scoring 38.

Asim Saeed contributed 68 and Kaif Ghori 40 as UAE picked off the target in 34 overs with the loss of four wickets.

In the third match Wednesday, Maldives picked up their first win of the tournament with an eight wicket triumph over luckless Thailand.

Thailand were all out for 121 in the 48th over, with Anil Tanwani the only batsman to fire before he was caught and bowled by Ahmed Amir for 52. Amir returned with figures of three for 13 off 6.3 overs.

Maldives, in reply, plundered the Thai bowling and reached the target in just 16 overs for the loss of two wickets, with opener Moosa Khalem unbeaten on 51 from 41 balls, including eight fours and a six.

The tournament is for the 10 non-Test sides in Asia and the Middle East, with the two finalists qualifying for the Asia Cup in two years' time which involves Test-playing nations India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Nepal in finals of 4th ACC Trophy

Nepal has reached the finals of the 4th ACC Trophy in Singapore by beating Malaysia by 25 runs in a tense and tightly contested semi final game played at the Indian Association ground.

Winning the toss again, Nepal elected to bat and started off shakily. They were 33 for 4 when Shakti Gauchan stepped in and settled Nepal down. At the loss of their 7th wicket, Nepal had a score 175 runs. At the end of 50 overs, Nepal were 181 for the loss of 9 wickets.

The high scores for Nepal were Shakti Gauchan 67, Paras Luniya 28, and B K Das with 38 runs.

With Malaysia needing only 182 to win, Nepal with good bowling and fielding got Malaysia all out for 156 runs. Luck was on Nepal's side due to poor fielding of Malaysian players who had 4 dropped catches.

Great Job Nepali Cricketers!!!!

Now, they deserve praise. Despite adverse political climate and apathy to sports
in general at home, these players did really good in Cricket, and are going to play
with test playing nations in future, so enriching themselves with invaluable
experience. (Note: I am still learning about rules of Cricket, and why is it that
while two guys swelter in heat with bats, the others chill out, and are still
considered to be playing.)

And beating Malaysia is so cool. Remember those Malaysian fans and players
who were so mean when we scored against them in Hongkong in world cup football
selection (or was it Olympics football selection). And despite Singapore being
like their home turf, our boys whacked them hard!!

Nepal's cricket team has done a great job !!!!!

I hope we will get to see Nepal qualify for World Cup and then to graudate on to Test status say within the next 10 years or so.

South Asia has most Test playing nations anyway - India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and now B'desh. I don't suppose it's an unrealistic expectation.
