Namaste everyone,

In early 1997, I had an opportunity to spend some time discussing Nepali literature/sahitya with Khagendra Sangraula – a well-respected Nepali writer in Kathmandu.

In the course of our conversations, I
requested Khagendra-dai to recommend
classic Nepali-bhasa ko literature books which one can go out, buy and read in spare time . . .

Below appear Khagendra dai's recommendations. Please note that this is only an informal list for the interested . . .

Hope this list will prove useful to you, fellow-sahitya-premi -- as it has been to
me over the years.

At this point, I would like to thank Boston
residents Pushkar Pokharel (now living in
Canada), Basanta Shrestha (now living in
Virginia), Mabi Singh, Mahesh Maskey, Dilip
Parajuli, Nir Subba (now living in Nepal)
and others who had helped keep the "Nepali sahitya spirit" in the Boston Nepali Community alive and well.

I forgot to add:

Pushkar Pokharel's then Laxman
Shrestha's name to the list of
sahitya supporters.

And the fact that many of our
"Boston sahitya velas" took place
over steaming momos (often expertly
prepared/managed by Mabi Singh,
and lots of spicy buffalo wings,
and a generous supply of Corona
beer (with salt and kagati added!)

With some revision and addition,
Nepali sahitya ko this INFORMAL
reading list has just been published on
pages 63-64 in the special Dassain 2057 (double)issue of Himal Khabar-Patrika (Nepali language).

Well-known Nepali writer Khagendra
Sangraula prepared the list. This
list will be a valuable reference
for anyone wanting to acquaint herself
with Nepali sahitya.

Special thanks to Himal's editors Kanak
Mani Dixit and Rajendra Dahal for
publishing the list.

This collection of list is very very laudable
effort from Khagendra Sangraula and you.

As of every effort, this collection also has
some shortcomings. I think two of the most
indispensable books were omitted:

1.Ashwatthama (Madhav Ghimire).
2.Basain (Lila Bahadur Kshetri).

The impact of both of these books can not
be underestimated. In my thought,
Manab(Prashrit) and Hitler ra Yahudi(BP
Koirala) also deserved listing.

By the way, you did a great job.

Biswo,

The new revised list, as published in the latest issue of Himal Khabar Patrika,
includes:

1) Basaain
2) Hitler ra yehudi.

It lists Ghimire's other books, but not
the one you have suggested. There is no
mention of Prasit's book "manab".

Then again, the list is only a informal
guide -- a guide to those who, who
do other things as professionals, are interested in Nepali literature but
are unsure where to begin theior readings
from.

Ashu:

I am not trying to brag here. But Just wanted
to write some of nice prediction I made
regarding Nobel prize winners.

I guessed Amartya Sen correctly as a winner
of economics Nobel prize in 1998, and
"Doctors without borders"(medicos sans frontier(?)) in 1999 as a winner of Nobel
peace prize winner.

I am not a handicapper to predict these
thing, nor am I equipped with any empirical
database.Generally,my choice conforms the
selectors. This sometimes give me immense joy,
sometimes despondence that in stead of being
novel and rebellion in idea and thoughts, I
have been conforming norms.

The inclusion of Basain and Hitler ra
yahudi in the revised list also gives me same
feeling.Hey, are we conforming each other
to some extent?
