Biswo’s “Nightmares of Mahaasthami” thread as much was intriguing and thought provoking it has come to its age and done its part of serving the purpose. Here, let us concentrate on yet another important twist on this gruesome but socially accepted tradition and discuss does this tradition contribute to the behavior of Maoist comrade’s punishment tactics on beheading their victims and treat a human being as animals and decapitate the body parts? (‘Someone’ did try to put a tint of this issue on earlier thread but was not responded) My questions very narrowly focuses on why Maoist chose to punish their victims by beheading them? I would like to put in the floor some thoughts to discuss: 1) Are we Nepalese society (en mass) really deceivingly cruel inside? Soft outside but really very hard inside? 2) Did British government recognize this behavior around 200 years ago? 3) I know people’s war movement in other country also kill people but the method of punishment is less gruesome 4) I have noticed as a society we hardly take any notice of gruesome killings other than simple ‘Kathai Bichara’ for a while and move on to our daily lives. It really does not shake us that much. 5) All Maoists comrades don’t execute people. Their must be few ‘Jallads’ who are trained to do the gruesome work, who are they? (I remember Kafle dai of our village whose eyes used to get red after sacrificing few goats in our village. He used to say ‘Babu Ma Lai Ta Khun Chadhi Sakyo’ – makes me frown even today) 6) There are some tribes in Nepal who dispose their deceased family member by dismembering their body parts for the lack of cremation cost. ee ti

Hi Logical Senseji, I think there may not be a significant connection. The reason is simple, does Maoism need lesson from a ritual for its murderous acts? No. Maoist rebles ARE capable of doing heinous crime intrinsically. Didn't they kill people in China the way they are doing in Nepal? They did. LTTE does the same , whenever there is a confrontation, LTTE just kills all the soldiers. (To remind, LTTE , though a Marxist organization, is probably not a Maoist outfit.) And we know very well that the Bolshevics killed unarmed Romanovs in the basement of the prison, a lot of them were children. This is just a murderous trail , right from the history. Murder is the mainstay of these rebellions. The only thing Maoists have common with bali prathaa is, they hack people, sometimes skin them (sadly often before rather than after killing), and they DO often acknowledge that the life was taken by publishing who was done 'safaayaa'!!

I think Nepalese are kind of cruel because 1. I have seen Nepalese woman beat up their kids really bad, using harsh materials like Sishnu pani, stick, poring cold water on kids during winter, etc etc 2.I have seen people beat up their dogs, cows, elephants really bad. 3. Don't tell me that you haven't seen servants being treated really bad, they get beaten up, have to sleep on the floor, don't get enough to eat are not allawed to sit on chairs, couches etc.(Idont mean everybody does that) 4.beating up their daughter for falling in love, force their kids to marry soembody they dont want to, if the single girls get pregnant( Oh boy), she is a whore for the rest of her life. You and I know how she gets treated. There is no saying that maybe she is young and she made a mistake, or she made a mistake, everybody does it. 5.Parents love for the kids are conditional. I love you as long as you do what I want is the mentality. like point 4, kids get kicked out of the house, is a disgrace to the family, very little understanding towards children's feelings like we saw in our crown prince's case. Even he was not allowed to marry the person he wanted to.( I am not trying to say what he did is right.) 5. I am sure you heard about the cases where women were accused fo being a witch and made to eat faeces, (yuck, how cruel and disgusting). 6. People in the jails are beaten to death. I know it happens elsewhere too but making them piss on the electrical heater ( OOh boy).

'Ha Ha Ha'ji I am not Biswo. Please! Biswo is Biswo and Logical Sense is Logical Sense! Also, this thread purpose is completely different than what was in 'Mahaasthami' thread. On the positive note, I am kind of flattered by somebody thinking I am Biswo. I am a admirer of Biswo no doubt regarding his depth of knowledge (most of the time - admittently :-) ). Ok back to the subject! Bhedaji, you have a very good point. This adds to my logic. Thanks for pointing to it. And how about our 'short temprament'? Biswoji, exactly my point, I was just talking about the 'method of killing' not killing itself. Why they adopted the path of mostly hacking people like Bali Ko Boka for punishment why not other methods? And why they skin people like Muslims skin goats? Is it because they find Jallads among us who could easily be trained to kill humans like they kill goat and rango? Fior them 'life' has no meaning whether it is animal or the humans? That is the main point of this thread. Thanks for participating!

I think there is some connection. For any act you need motiavation to commit, and means to perform. Motivation of Maoist rebels is known by now, but, means? Of course when Khukuries are readily available and there are people who are experienced to hack and de-skin that became the easiest methods. This is no brainer, look at in US, guns are readily available so crime is committed with guns. In Palestine bombs are readily available so that's what is being used. In Japan no guns, no bombs, so Harakiri is done using any sharp items (including knives). But, bigger questions to ask is what can be done? Should we license Khukuries? Should we stop bali in public? What type of education we need regarding this? Economic prosperity? Or All?

There might be connection. But Maoists are not the only one to kill their 'enemies' by beheading. During the French Revolution also, many of the aristocrats were later beheaded in Guillotine. It, though, was done mechanically rather than with active human participation. Active human participation in killing always makes killing cruel. Killing by pushing button always looks more humane than killing by pushing a knive.

To Mr. “ Very_Conerned”, Did you go to school? I guess, you went to school but didn’t learn anything about Sociology, Political, Historical, Economic and management, Law and psychology. This analysis shows that you have half brain. That means your brain function half, not completely 100%. So you only can understand whatever is in front of you. You can not remember past and do not have clue about future. It makes you very selfish, stupid, cruel and rude or manner less “uncivilized” person. You might forget things very much or quickly. You even don’t know or understand whatever that you telling to other. This is a symptom of mental problem. You might hurt other people and laugh of it. Do you know about “Respect”, “Help”, “Protect”, “Independent”, “Support”, “Encourage”, “Love”, “Honesty”, “Share” and “Civilize”? We are not joking with you. You better do checkup your mental in hospital, or go to psychiatric.

I was reading an article just now. And I found an interesting article. It was interesting in the sense that it gave me an insight into how "others" think about Nepali culture. In the article it mentions that the author was in Kathmandu on a certain dashain. He says : "the larger the goat picked, the more wealthy that person was. " Oh great! So we need some nincompoch to tell us that a costlier goat was bought by a wealthier guy. I mean does it happen any differently in other parts of the world. Do the poor buy bigger hamburger in USA and the rich buy the smaller one. SO, what's the point that this author is trying to make. He says :"representing deities detailed in the Indian Pantheon" He says we follow "Indian Pantheon". First of all the name "India" was given to this region only recently. And when it comes to other religions then they want to define a geographic limit to it. Even though he is in nepal he thinks Nepal to be too insignificant. Then he mentions pantheon. The most likely meaning of pantheon in this context is "Word of the Day". So when we celebrate "bz}+ are we following some "Word of the Day"? Observing the authors whole writing, I would say that he was indoctrinated to dislike our culture because of his long association with conservative friends/education system. I am not putting the link to the article because I found it too disturbing.
