Prachanda calls for interim govt for peace

Post Report

KATHMANDU, July 18

The outlawed Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) has favoured a consensus under the leadership of an interim government to formulate the modalities and criteria for holding the mid-term elections, indicating that it would not be averse to participate in the polls.

A statement issued by party chairman Prachanda on Thursday significantly dropped the demand for Constituent Assembly, further hinting that the underground outfit had taken into account the hostile domestic as well as external scenarios against their campaign of violence and terror.

The new demand for consensus under an interim government apparently opens the possibility of the Maoists being called to participate in the November mid-term polls. So far the Maoists had been taking the stand that they would oppose and foil the coming elections but today’s gesture was significant departure from that position provided the "minimum" demand for the formation of interim government was met.

"We are ready to resolve the problem through talks with all the political parties and people’s forces," read the statement. Prachanda also referred to his letter which he had written to all the parties and intellectual communities before the term of the first six months’ emergency expired in which he had expressed willingness to sit for talks.

Prachanda also said that as the country was likely to face extreme anarchy with the ganging up of domestic feudal elements and international reactionary forces, all political parties which want to protect the achievements of the 1990s People’s Movement should come together.

He also said that the present situation of emergency and the dissolution of the elected House of Representatives and announcement of the elections were not an outcome of rift between Girija Prasad Koirala and Sher Bahadur Deuba but was a conspiracy hatched by feudal forces.

The latest offer from the Maoist supremo comes in the wake of Indian government’s crackdown on the Maoist network and threat of possible deportation of its top leadership as part of their commitment against global terror.
