Well, after seeing so many messages/hypes on ana convention in this forum, I regretted for a while on not attending this so called great get together of our fellow nepalis in states.
BUT JUST FOR A WHILE!!!
so why didn't i attend the friggin convention :P

After inquiring and getting insight of the convention i did come to realize ........ana convention is just another "jatra", ramita herna matrai gaye ho..the sad thing is I have already seen enough jatras in my life.......haha yah i live very near handigaon..so u know "kahi nabhako jatra" ...though there were numerous small ones, the big handigaon jatra did not only bring this small community together but also attracted flocks of visitors, gangsters, drunkards and who else for the grand get together ;) ...Interestingly enuough, the involvement in the jatra is limited to the aborigines..

Sure thing, ANA convention to my understanding is for the nepalis settling in usa to come together once a year for a great event...and it does attract visitors and students to see very amazing "RAMITA"S and complete unrealistic feats...I don't understand the surreal appeal the convention has on students who are struggling through out the states. what support does the convention provide for these students? financial, educational, career wise........i guess not!! most ppl i know attended the convention had a disgusting sole goal: meeting hot NEPALI gals, proving to be the futile drinker in the crowd, and standing out as the best pot smoker ....well, if there was any reinforcement ANA got was sure, ripping the hard earned money and working time of students who sure are now terrified looking at the bills off the next semester....sorry fellas! you should have realized that while u were courting a gal in the convention trying yor best to prove what u were not! well, its all not lost fellas, i hope u enjoyed the jatra, and the amazing cherished memories..and there's so much hype bout u guys right here in this forum "yah sure post more photos"..so much for the personal satisfaction..but the truth is bitter......so many of you have spent your hard earned money for months burning yor hands, bootlicking, testing yor physical limits to the edge!! now u can resort back to your parents full in debt and ask them to get more loan!!..........or is ana gonna help u get that!!

hey fellas,I am not against the convention thing or bringing together the community and promoting the culture and heritage. Jus it is mind boggling to see the intent of people at such a convention. After the jatra is over, the aborigines remain while the visitors have to disperse to their original backyard..with gaping mouths, throbbing hearts, and EMPTY POCKETS!! soon the cherished memories of the jatra will be replaced by fears of work, bills and studies........

well not all might say what i have perceived. After all, not all of us have seeen jatras and it might be quite an amusing experience the first time around..esp. if you accomplice what you had gone for (pot, drink and of course a hot nepali maiya :) ) ..well as for me, JATRA and the hype about it makes me nauseated venting thoughts like these.....
nways, hope you enjoyed the convention and had better moments!

PS. i am sure many of you want to retort back at me with all the outrageous comments. WEll, pals it doesn't make a difference does it. After all, what i understood is from my perspective, i maybe wrong......and what u understand is from yor perspective..even if you tried hard, u wont' understand me :P so les jus respect each other opinions and let jatras prevail ;)..jus hope there are more forums in helping out hard working students who are all but struggling beyond yor comprehension!
peace

Comfy..
U really sound uncomfortable but there is truth in yr comment indeed...
NepaliKeti Posted on 20-Jul-02 05:23 PM

Comfy, even though there is some truth to what u say, u make it sound like there is no freaking point to the convention.....to some people maybe there is no point, but if u think about it, u get to meet new people, and yes see all the "ramitas", as u said, and about those goals of meeting hot gals, maybe thats not such a bad idea ;)
psychodreamer Posted on 20-Jul-02 06:42 PM

Comfy ...you piece of shit...cynic mofo....what do you mean by students are struggling in each states?....do you mean that they should not have desire to have fun.....if you are struggling and want to save your freakin money then go for it dude...
Change your attitude too dude....you thinkn you are son of some rich asshole....and if you work then you are from different class??? piece of shit...ask someone to drill your ear with someones Di*K

Comfu,

"Too much expectations bring frustrations"..and there are pros and cons of everything..everydeeds. You detailed down most of the negative aspects and consequences one faced or are facin' after the convention. You're true to some of the extent.
But again. isn't it overwhelmin' to meet a long lost friend who you never expect to meet in life? Where does monitary value fits in the pleasure that some lucky guys met their soul mates (just evokin' humour..hopefully someone did!) or carried back fond memoirs to cherish or revive during hard times:)
Simple market rules: you work hard & earn so that you can spend...besides 6 packs aren't free too;)
I didn't attend the ANA convention this year..but I'll make it next year for nothing..just to meet you guys..

peace yo!

Now Now Now,
I do not agree with comfy in some regards, but there's this essence of truth about it. Les face it!!!
and psychodreamer and other confused repliers, probably u forgot to read the PS part. Maybe it will help you to UNDERSTAND OTHER'S OPINION A LIL BIT!
Well, if only people could understand each other??? anyways, comfy, I might not understand you, but I do get a sense of what you are trying to say. Maybe you didn't phrase it as right.
and diva, comfy was never against having the convention and meeting your old friends..perhaps you should read again too
hope to see ya in the next convention then
Still confused bystander!

Confy Supporter Posted on 21-Jul-02 12:11 PM

Hey guys,
I stongly support confy's comments. I have been to couple of conventions and UNFORTUNATELY i am forced to go to ANA convention again. There is no reason to attend ANA.

ANA is not only "JATRA" and "RAMITA", its a kind of "NATAK" too. From my perspective, this convention is only the place to spend your MONEY.

I had a very bitter experience from the convention. Well well...I am not sure how many of you guys have attended the "RAKTAMYA PAHAD". There were many ppl though. How many of you have donated for "Maobadi PIDITs". I saw most of the fellows leaving the place once the guy started collecting the donation. These are few of the Nepali guys who call themselves the NEPAL LOVER. Its shame on you guys....You have been spending so much money in the BAR and you can not contribute a single BUCK for the welfare of "MAObadi PIDIT". Is this the objective of you guys to attend ANA convention?

I am strongly against the Registration fees and the tickets for Concert and cultural programs too. SOJHA haru sabaile pahile nai Ticket Kine. They spent 20 buck for the Concert ticket and of course for the registration too. How many of you guys have been HONEST and registered in the convention? What is the point in selling the concert tickets since they allowed everybody to enter the concert after a while. so its only SOJHA people being CHEATED.

As commented by Confy, were there any programs for career development of the Students? What about financial aide and scholarship programs?

It might be my Wrong expectation and apparently it is. Most of the guys have ONLY one goal for getting HOT gals and handsome HUNKS. huh..its not bad in itself. But except that What is the purpose of ANA convention? Please tell me if there is anything else....

Okay guys I am too much tired of attending ANAs...every year I expect good but never happened so. So I am not attending the next year ANA. GOOD luck to you guys....

P.S. This piece of comment does NOT refer to all Nepalis in ANA. There were very good guys too. You guys are welcome to reply......
strawberry Posted on 21-Jul-02 12:19 PM

dearest comfu,
are you being like that fox and saying "the grapes are sour"?
strawberry Posted on 21-Jul-02 12:24 PM

thanks comfy supporter. at least u didn't generalize the convention and respected "the good guys" who attended the convention.
comfynumb Posted on 21-Jul-02 12:53 PM

subhachintak,
of course the entire scenario surely does make me very very uncomfortable indeed!!

Nepali KT: so your point of the entire convention is meeting new ppl and getting someone for yourself.....u might wanna check out nepali get together..
its a chat gathering..meeeeting new ppl , getting to know some and some hot hunks too :) no offence..but u might wanna consider your prefix "nepali"
before you post yor next msg (peace;) )

psychodreamer: well, i can't lower myself to your class, but u r a psycho..sorry i forgot that u need therapy to understand the broader scenario of life
but u do have every right to retort back :) no hard feelings dude!

diva_starz: I love your comments, not only on this post...but its very easy to be a bystander, be the analyzer and give in yor best fabricated sympathy and
feelings. But you are far from the truth. ITs one thing writing about what u perceive and its totally another being a victim. well mandi, no offences meant
whatsoever......but I think the objective of such a forum of national signature can't be converged to "having some selfish fun memories"..besides
when you are facing the music(on your rainy day), how can you help yourself by thinking of some long gone fantasy....(very interested in that one!!)
and i am sure i wasn't pointing out the negative aspects like i said i am not against the convention or the ppl attending it....like someone else said,
will there be enough ppl donating money for maobadi pidits and badi pidits if such forums are held.......or will we continue to have ppl posting
messages of how sympathetic they are to nepal and nepalis but since they are so sad, have to spend their bucks on a bottle of corona to drain out their blues !!
nways thanx for your insight :) i enjoyed it

Confused Bystander: I hope you understand a lil more now after reading these msgs :P

supporter: that was exactly what i was referring to :P not the negative aspects of ana convention......thanx for clarifying dude!!

Strawberry: Dearest strawberry, the grapes might not be sour..but i am fox now ..looking at the NEPALI JUNGLE and realizing very few sweet grapes remain out here...
:) thanxxxxxxxxxx!!

no hard feelings anyone :) continue ......
peace comfy
Makuro Posted on 21-Jul-02 01:26 PM

I never attended any ANA convention before. This year I attended. I attended because the Convention was held in DC area and I live in DC area. This was the only reason why I was in Convention. Had it been in NYC or in Denver or Boston, I wouldn't have. As Comfynumb put it, being student I cannot afford to take off from work, spend money to attend Convention. But I wouldn't call Convention worthless or just a jatra. I learned many things. One of things I learned from convention is I really got motivated by the people who were honored for 'making our mark' event. Not many young people like me attended that meeting unfortunately. Hearing them felt like reading Covey, Robbins or Chopra( motivational gurus). Most of them came to this country just like us as a student. Worked hard. And achieved something to be pround of. From Sudha Shah's dream of taking the World with just three hundred and fifty dollar on her pocket to Kul Chandra Gautam's five point success secrets were all worth listening to. There were lots of forums there. I attended one of them called Entrepreneur's forum. It was definately useful. Yes about culture program and registration thing, things could have been done much better. Tyo chai pakai ho...tickets and registration were foronly for sojo manche. I was really amazed to see ticketless guy sitting way infront in cultural program. Well I don't mean to imply the organizing people didn't do their job well. Event of this magnitude couldn't be possible without their hard work and dedication. It was not worthless Jatra. Found many friends from high school. Got some emails of seniors who are working. Met, knew new person. Well I wouldn't call it just worthless 'jatra'. Even in Jatra, one needs to be little savy how useful that jatra can be. We know icecream vendor( barafwala) do their business well in jatra! The bottom line is if you have money and time, sure it's worth attending it. Next year in Colorado, if I get a job by then, I will definately attend the convention otherwise I will forgo attending it! About finding a girl or guy, well it's all luck. Well guy: girl ratio was like 5:1. And most of the girls were already married, taken and on-hold..so for those guys who will be attending convention next year, I advise them to lower their expectation about finding girl.

Parental Advisory Explicit Thoughts

It’s really depressing to see how conventions like these, instead of making a positive impact to the community, have a demoralizing effect (atleast to our really dogmatic NN chatters). We tend to put forward our views and argue about the pros and cons of such gatherings but deep within ask yourself…..WHAT ARE U DOING TO CHANGE THIS??? Ur contribution DOES make a DIFFERENCE!!!

U will have morons wherever u go… so do urself and everyone else a favor…. next time ur in such gatherings try ur level best to NOT TO ACT as a SNOT!!!!!

Dear fellow Nepalese across the United States and around the Globe.

I can see 3 things lacking in us badly. they are:-

1. LEARN TO PRAISE OTHERS EVENTHOUGH YOU DIDN'T LIKE IT.
2. WELCOME ANY CRITICISM AS FRIENDLY SUGGESTIONS. AND
3. STOP PULLING EACH OTHERS LEG.

NEPALESE WE STAND FOR.
viewfinder Posted on 22-Jul-02 02:59 AM

continuation from earlier msg...

all the people have expressed their views beautifully. some agree some don't. don't take it personally. i myself never attended any ANA convention. but looking forward to participating in the next one which is going to be held right here in Denver. what i read/ heard and felt from various sources organizers definitely need some excercise and home work.

they screwed this and in the past doesn't mean next will be bad as well.

let's pray and hope for the Best and fear for the Worst.

Comfy: nuthing wrong with your views but I fail to see the badness in the so called jatras. I for one was happpy to talk and scream in nepali. Where else can you get that these days.

Diva was right, the feeling of meeting long lost and not-as-lost friends is welcome.

And if boozing and smokin makes one happy what's wrong with it. As long as one maintains his/her commitment, be it work or study, leisure time is for one to do as he/she pleases.

Ani Sathi ho, make sure you rock and then rock some more the 1974 concert this summer. Bad decision by NY and Boston to have it on friday excludes some of us distant jatra lovers.

To all nepali, hippies and non hippies ..... enjoy while it lasts. Then it back to mid terms or working 8 to whenever ......

Dear Junkie bro,
I dont see anything bad either....

Just one question though: SO is that the objective of conventions like ANA?
chandre Posted on 24-Jul-02 10:21 AM

Comfy,
yaar you didn't tell me which handigau jatra were you more impressed with? the one with mane khat-tudaldevi or the one with main(wax)-naran jatra?

About ANA, ask any one who attended 1974 AD. They say...it ROCKED.

You didn't like ANA? that's cool as well, man. Why don't you think about starting another Association of Nepalis in the Americas (Comfy) that rocks for everyone including yourself?

Kasailai ramro kasailai naramro...yastai chha sathi kusume rumal.

sure handigaon jatra rocked more!! haven't seen gang fights (nepali style) for soo long haha..
hey hey again..never was against the convention nor the ppl attending it.........."misunderstanding does make us the morons of us all :P"
must have been hell of a convention..
my only POINT IS : What's the objective> well nevamind..do not wanna waste my time !
"kukur ko puchar barha barsha dhungro ma rakhe ni bango ko bangai"

N i am not interested in opening any other forums..for jatti gare ni bro, politics sux in!

Comfy:

Not everything in convention has to be a landmark setting feat. Satisfaction, happiness, laughing and sure going nuts (by drinkin and smokin) are all part of it. The BEST part of the convention was that there a a lil bit for everyone.

Some deserved got rewarded. Bravo ..... Some honed their poetic skills .... "chat-maya" Bravo ..... and quite a few of us got to enjoy the awesome 1974/Deep Sth concert ..... Dhanyad very much!

In my opimnion, convention is a sort of get-to-gether to meet frens, family and relive the good 'ol past. Heck, I even got to swear in "mu..." .... "ma ...." and ppl understood : )

So much for angrajee gali .......
comfy_OUT Posted on 24-Jul-02 08:46 PM

Dear Junkie bro..
me tired of sajha..and this thread.........so calling it quits!!!

i can play a song..but it gets awfully monotonous trying to repeat the same thing over over over over over over over over and over again esp, when ppl start referring to other genres which i am least concerned bout. HELL YAH..I DIDN"T KNOW convention was for a merry get together, hunting down maiyas, drinking during drink breaks and smoking the brain outs!! COUNT ME IN FOR THE NEXT ONE!!!

what on earth did i think that i could accomplish by posting a thread.. "THERE"S SOMETHING IN MY HEAD, ITS NOT ME"
MY BAD FELLAS!

I had thought this site was a mature and healthy discussion site....another illusion..junkie bro i am not referring to you or this thread! after reading a few threads today..........I FEEL AWFULLY ASHAMED THAT I WAS PART OF ALL THIS.
It was a wonderful week getting to know sajha, being part of it, and now getting nauseated by NEPALIS trying to slander other NEPALIS thinking they are better NEPALIS all in the name of NEPAL :) how charismatic :)
Nways no offences to anyone...
See ya all on the dark side of the moon!
PS> San bro, let me know if there is any progress on xaviers website ..all the best!
Never Give UP Posted on 24-Jul-02 09:50 PM

One of the most memorable commencement speeches that was ever heard about was delivered at Harrow in England. That's the school where Winston Churchill nearly flunked out three times. At any rate, after Churchill had become Prime Minister of England, Harrow invited him to give their commencement address. I can only begin to imagine his feelings as he went back to that school where so many years earlier he had had such a hard time. His commencement address was like none that that school had ever heard before-or since! Churchill walked up to the podium and said three words: "Never give up." Then he paused and said: "Never give up." And he paused even longer and said: "Never give up." And then he sat down
Comfy brother..never give up! I am dazed by your last message. Remember these three words " NEVER GIVE UP"
