What's up some NEPALI PARENTS a$$es? I can't understand some nepali parents pushing their kids to be so americanized and not even teaching them how to speak "nepali" but have time to make them watch hindi movies and teach them dhoti tradition. I can't stand parents saying "oh, nepali bolna audaina" GIVE ME A #$##%^& BREAK". I was born and raised right here in the US but my parents raised me well. i speak both nepali and english fluently and it can be done. And i plan to teach my kids to speak both languages one day. So for some snobby a$$ nepali parents, teach you kids how to speak the freaking language. AND one more thing, why do some nepali budhis think they're all that just b/c they have a little bit of money in a bank account. puleeze, we all come from a F&**ed up little country, so stop acting so high and mighty here in the States.

Psychodreamer, UNFORTUNATELY it's true, i actually met a family with 2 girls, who couldn't speak a damn thing, and their parents response was "khoi, bolna audaina, i felt like screaming it's your f*^*ing responsibility to teach them. anyhow, it's sad, but what's even sadder is i see those fresh of the boats parents telling their kids not to speak "nepali" and only "english".

Hey foxy agreed again, 1000%, these little conventions and nepali get togethers all you see is ladies trying to show off how much jewlery they can wear, i swear sometimes, its like..are u able to walk carrying all that weight, plus they are already FAT. ANyways the point is, yeah i've had nepali parents say "oh we've been here 7 yrs and she's forgetten how to speak"...Kiss my A$$ , i was born here and i know how to speak damn well. all nepali women have time to do is worry about other people instead of worrying about themselves. Maybe if you put that time into your own family problems, then maybe your mouth wouldn't open so often....

I think the biggest problem with Parents raising thier kids in US is that , they expect the kids to be Americanized a.k.a they have pride in the fact that the kids dont speak english, or they dont like nepali food etc. However, when it comes to going out at night , or sometimes even dressing up (mainly for gals), having boyfriends or girlfriends, or even just having the opposite sex call home, etc it is a no no. That is pretty damaging to the psychology of kids you know. They want us to be American, specially in the presence of thier Nepali frens and thier kids, yet they want us not to indugle in a social life that in the norm amorg Americans. Are you kidding me? Why dont they decide and pick a side, at least the kids wouldnt grow all messed up, and hide and do all the stuff(that is rather ok, and harmless) like dating, and going out late? When it comes to those things they say "but remember we are nepali , in our society this is not OK...and bla bla" Then on the other hand, like Foxy and Sweet said, they are proud of showing off the so called "Americanized" part of us. They are pretty hypocritical , and rather stupid if they think that others dont take notice of these things!!!

Listen, if you're a US citizen, and if your son is a US born Nepali, then he doesn't really need to learn Nepali. After all, he is an American citizen! Will he ever go back to Nepal? Most likely not. So why should he learn Nepali, a language that has no use whatsoever in foreign countries? Also, I wouldn't want my child to have that South Asian curry accent. South Asian accent is the biggest joke ever. Everybody makes fun of it. I know tons of folks who were born and raised in the US, and I really find it funny that they speak with that typical Nepali accent. Sure, it isn't as heavy as that of the fobby types, but it sure is there.

ROFLMAO, i am not really talking about the use or it's importance, i am just saying learn the language so you can communicate with other neplese. i love meeting new neplese, and speaking with them in nepali. And so what he's an american citizen, you'll still have grandparents, cousins, uncle/aunts who are neplese and some who dont' speak english fluently.

Rofman, it's not about having a greencard, it's about knowing where your roots are from, you might think your american, but trust me, you can't have the image of a typical american towards society, somehow you will stand out, and you will be looked upon as someone from a different place. when you look in the mirrior you'll know somethings missing from you, ..yeah it's true that we might not go back to nepal to live, but sure enough, we'll have it in our hearts, and we'll carry our pride with us, and learning how to speak nepali can bring us just a little closer to nepal, if not physically, we can be there mentally!!

Since English is an international language, everybody should learn it is what I think! I am assuming (and I think I am correct) that virtually all Nepalis who venture out to the states can communicate in English. Children of parents whose first language isn't English usually can understand the language, but cannot speak the language. If a Nepali guy/gal an American born Nepali just met at a bar doesn't want to communicate with him in English, then he can speak in Nepali. However, he will be answering in English. Is it that awkward? My cousins can only speak English, but their parents talk to them in Nepali. They have no trouble comprehending what they're saying.

Many Italian Americans, Greek Americans, Indian Americans, Spanish Americans, etc can't speak their mother tongue, yet they know their heritage perfectly well.

Sweetcheeks ?? Was I fking talking to you ? You are the type of people who poke yo nose into other people's business. I can speak whatever the fK I want.and whenever I want. This is not Nepal, As they say when in Rome do as the Romans do. If you don't fking like it here then fking GO BACK HOME. Why the fk are you here in the first place ? If you like yo language sooo much go back home and teach them properly when you have your own. You CAN EVEN TEACH THEM SANSKRIT YOU WANT. Just like you won't like other telling your kids what to do, other people don't like it as well. MIND YO OWN FKING BUSINESS. SWEETCHEEKS ??? WHAT SORT OF A NAME IS THAT ? Do you have keratosis ? Or is it anal fissure ? Or maybe anal fistula ? Or anal atresia ? Or rectal ampulla ? Maybe you need to have a rectal sigmoidoscopy to fix yo probe.

Foxy, Yeah I am minding my own business...I am not going around bitching about other neither am I telling how they should bring up their kids. Yeah!! think this for a moment.. If you had children would you like other people telling you how you should raise their children ? I definately would not like it. People do not like to be told what to do. Its one's choice whether they want to teAch their kid Nepali or not...or maybe they don't have time to do that(maybe their mom is a single mom working 2 jobs). You don't even know. AND YOU COME HERE AND BITCH ABOUT IT WITHOUT EVEN KNOWING THE WHOLE TRUTH NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH. There are a lotta angles to the same statement depends upon how look at it. So LOOK BEFORE YOU LEAP ....thats all I am saying.

How about if I just speak newari and English. When I came to the states I only spoke newari at home and here we only speak newari at home. When I go to Nepal, I either speak newari or English. However the new generation kids in my family don't speak newari, only nepali. Newari is being lost in Nepal. They only want their kids to know nepali because they don't want their kids to have a newari accent, they fear discrimination by the nepali speaking majority. However I would not criticize them or judge them, that is their decision. I think everyone should just mind their own business.... language doesn't make you who you are ..... it is thought the mind and heart..... In Nepal nepali isn't the only language and in USA english isn't the only language. So don't judge people and try to impose your beliefs and values. If you think it is important for you to teach your kids nepali, that is great....but that does not mean eveyrone should have to do what you do....nor is it wrong if they don't want it for their kids. As for communicating with other nepalese they can talk in any language they want.
