I am going to Kathmandu on a year's project, please le me know names of good schools there. My children speak Nepali but do not read and write well, but they are young, so I am sure they can pick up fast. Please give me a list of what you think are the best schools in Nepal, schools that have a reputation for good education and extra curricular activities. This way I can have my relatives there contact the school before I get there. Any suggestions and topics regarding this matter would help.Thank you very much.

where? Posted on 26-Jul-02 12:10 AM

Hello,
Thank you Rekha, I have heard of all those schools. I was looking for a school with smaller classrooms though, I will still check them out. Since I have only girls , Xaviers is out of question though. Someone suggested Rato Bangala,Shubatara, Triyog Girls ? Any alunmi from these schools here? Any other small schools that are good?
wonderer Posted on 26-Jul-02 12:15 AM

As far as I know, both St Xaviers and Budhanilkantha are co-ed now. ( I might be wrong). I have heard of Shepherd International, for small kids, where most of the foriegn return kids go to school.
viewfinder Posted on 26-Jul-02 02:33 AM

i better suggest you either Lincoln or British primary school where most of the expatriates and excutives children study.
Well wishers Posted on 26-Jul-02 09:10 AM

Well !!! This is my honest opinion; All those name mentioned above used to be very good, no doubt about that ( I am also an Alumni from one of those good schools) but presently Chandbagh School is the best school that I came across when I was in Nepal last winter; Good education ( Very qualified Teachers ) with lots of extra curriculum activities...

Good luck for the quest of good schools......

If you need more help on this please let me know....Take care

Well wisher,

Dear mrs/mr Where?

The school of your choice depends on the money you have rather than anything else.
If u've got money then go for rato bangla. U're kids will get to be in a circle of other rich kids.

If you want to explore then:

St. Xavier's has now become co-ed. Also there are plenty of schools such as BhanuBhakta, Durbar High School, Sanskrit High School, BUDHANILKANTHA SCHOOL.
All these schools are good. The class size doesn't matter. in fact more the class size, the better the chances that u're kids will find friends.
Bhenda Posted on 26-Jul-02 09:46 AM

Shepherds international is not a good school.
KAKA Posted on 26-Jul-02 09:56 AM

Are you looking for good school or designer's school????
Used to be in Nepal Posted on 26-Jul-02 10:05 AM

Dipendra Police School used to be a very good school but been out of touch for so long I really do not know. I attended one of the schools mentioned here, actually two if you count I.SC. but all in all, DPS, Budha, Xavier's, etc. are pretty good.

Good luck to you.
rat-a-tat Posted on 26-Jul-02 11:16 AM

Dear Where?
Most of the above mentioned "really good" schools are pretty tough to get admissions, especially if the admission procedure is at the odd time of the session. Make sure you contact schools at the right time or maybe try to get hold of them before you come here to Nepal. However, admissions in private schools such as Galaxy, Paragon, Triyog, Gems, Elites or relatively more expensive ones like Rupy's International, British Primary, Lincohn etc might be easy if you spend a lot of money. Another famous school these days is also Malpi International located in scenetic Malpi...some sort of influeced by St. Xavier's Godavari but with all those modern facilities right in school. All the best!
Bhenda Posted on 26-Jul-02 11:49 AM

I heard a lot about Malpi Intl school too, but I will think twice before I send my kids to baording schools, I have heard a lot of stories about sexual molestation in those kinds of boarding shcools. I heard Stx fathers used to molest kids too. Thats shameful. Our kids are shy and are hesitant to talk about things like that but I heard there are lots of child molestation and rape cases in Nepal.
Bideshi Posted on 26-Jul-02 12:05 PM

If u have girls, then go for St. mary's.
It's the best school for girls.I am very confident about that as my sister and cousins are from there and today they r one of the best, highly cultured, and respectable ladies.I found that no matter, what others say(when they don't get admission there),that school is one of the best in the town.If u don't get admission over there ,Then go for St. Xavier's.It's co-ed now.Budhanilkantha is good too.As for rato bangala and so,they r just expensive schools, not good one.
Bideshi Posted on 26-Jul-02 12:09 PM

That sexually molesting is just a halla.Nobody in my family and circle as well as my friends have experienced that.By the way,St. Xavier's is no more boarding school, they have now only dayscholar students. So,That is out of the questions! Just go for st. mary's,if not go for st. xavier's or budhanilkantha.
where? Posted on 26-Jul-02 12:40 PM

Hello everyone,
Thank you for all the input. Boarding is out of question cus the girls are 5 and 7. They are going to be entering school in October, so that is mid year, I think. That is te biggest problem I am facing. Admission for younger kids, I heard is relatively easier, but who is going to take them mid year? About Lincoln, I do not want them going to an American school, because I want them to learn Nepali and the bestway would be to go to a Nepali school. Rato Bangala I heard has good extra curricular, but admission is tough, I am sure they do not guve admisssion few months in the year. I will try Malpi and St Mary's and Xaviers. I live in Kupondole, so a nearby school would be perfect.
where? Posted on 26-Jul-02 12:45 PM

Well wisher,
Where is Chandbagh School located, and could you please give me more info on that one?
Bhenda Posted on 26-Jul-02 12:57 PM

Bideshi,
I am not those kinds who just goes around spreading halla for no reason, my relatives went to StX and some of them have agreed that there were child molestation in those schools by Fathers. My brother is one of the victims of molestation, and I am speaking from experience. Children in Nepal dont speak up.
I am just trying to tell people that we should try to protect our kids thats all.
jhiri Posted on 26-Jul-02 02:41 PM

HImalayan International Model School, located behind Mahargunj is very good. Small class room goo facilities... but be prepared to choke some cash too.
send there if you can afford... will cost you around $1500 a year
most rich bhota's (carpet walla) in nepal send their kid there.
buddha Posted on 26-Jul-02 02:57 PM

Bhrikuti School is a good small school.
school finder Posted on 26-Jul-02 03:24 PM

Its not a good school. Its student who makes a difference. Paying lot of money doesnt make any sense.
Any government school is good if your kid is good. Do not u know that most of talented people study in government school.

Durbar High School is the best School in town right in the heart of the capitol. You kids get to learn all the languages , including Sanskrit, and cultures in six months ,no doubt. Eeveryday your kids get to smell the fresh air of Ranipohari and may be get used to with the college life also coz Tri- chandra college is right there. The royal palace is about 7 mins walk . Kids become more patriotic. They will have Ratna park in case they miss parks here in the states. The Bishow-Jyoti Cinema hall is at a stones throw. if they are more into Drama then can always venture into Sanskritic Sansthan or Nepal raoyal Academi, not to far rom the school aslo. Religiously, the The Kamaldi Ganesh Than and the Shora Bhuje Ganesh at Ratnapark, both can come handy. The chhal-pahal of Nayasadak and the hustle- bustle of Asan as well as Bhotahiti is also within arms reach. Most importanly, they will ,i am pretty sure if Subarna Shakya is still the Head master, will admit your kids any time of the year. So your kids will get all the excellent amneities for smaller price you pay and you get what you want. ' Yek Dhungale Dui wota Shikar Khutrukkai' What else you are looking for.If I were you I would contact the Durbar high School right away and inquire ,or don't even bother to inquire. Just go to Nepal and then give them a call and say you came from Nepal. tiniharu taukole tekera aunchan ra ti Choriharulai liyera janchan. You just have to go and pick them up in the evening which is gonna be nice stroll for you from kopundol anyway. Ke Bichar

Sanskrit high School is the one which teaches "Sanskrit". It encourages extracuricular activities such as debate etc. A graduate of "Sanskrit ma vi." is a well rounded person (able in all fields) with good ethics.

Stalwarts such as "Lakshmi p. Devkota" and "Lekh nath poudel" as supposed to have been graduates of that school.

Nepali being only a crude derivative of "Sansrit" you children will definately benefit from education from "Sanskrit high School ". It is located just infront of "Ranipokhari".

In fact, if you have extra cash, you could even make donation to that school so that it can increase its compound. YOU DECIDE.
DUMBASS Posted on 26-Jul-02 05:04 PM

THE Snaskrit high School actually pays for the Tuition for the school and, and after school, for higher education, called Balmiki Vidyapith right by Bhrikuti mandap. Both the schools , Durbar high school and Sanskrit High School , are loacted at the same historic , the very first school of Nepal. I was only meant for the Shree Tin, Shree Panch, jarsaheb and karsaheb's putra and putrinis.
Later on it became public. Your kids can always go downsatairs to the Snaskrit class at lunch and come upstairs after lunch. La ,tyo bhanda ramro kehi hunai saktaina. baru ahile nai Phone garnus. parcha bhane ma pani phone gardiula. Ke bichar
good school! Posted on 26-Jul-02 05:13 PM

Bhenda,
Molestation is a very sensitive topic and after coming to USA, lot of us tend to develop the misconception of the outright affection to MOLESTATION....I studied in godavari for six years, never ever heard or encountered anything such outrageous. TO BE VERY HONESt WITH YOU DUDE, FATHERS MIGHT HAVE USED OTHER MEANS TO SATISFY WHATEVER THEIR DESIRES..but never incurred in the students! not that i know of..so it would be very unfair to fathers who left their luxurious lives in states and are doing a great service to our nation living in austerity for more than fifty years now and still running! show some gratitude! Don't know bout the new dhotis though!!

as for the school hunting goes, xaviers still rocks in every aspect...now that it has become co ed, i am sure they'll have more diverse activities. The best part about xaviers is that NEPALI IS GOOD AS IF NOT BETTER THAN ENGLISH (many have this misconception bout xaviers) and the extracurricular activities are the best a child in any school can get.

Desh_Bhakta_Bhattarai Posted on 26-Jul-02 05:25 PM

Dear "Mr. Where?",
Education and life is what you make it. It doesn't matter to which school your daughters go, but the thing that matters is that how your daughters react to the environment of the school. Lets say that your daughters go to a school with a bad reputation. Will they turn out to have bad reputation too? No, if they don't get carried away by the environment. For that you have to control them ( but don't be that strict!!).

Lets look at every single school (in Nepal). Every single school has at least one all-rounder, studious person, oversmart student, overconfident student, a bully, a "haude", a sporty student, a "well-in-nothing" student, a strict teacher, a "fantush" teacher, a kind teacher, a "natabaadi"-"kripabaadi" teacher, a hitting teacher, a shouting teacher, a teacher who doesn't give points no matter how much you write etc.

In my point of view, all schools are the same! No matter which school your daughters go, their lives is what THEY make out of it.

Best of luck for your daughters and hope they'll be successful!

~ Desh Bhakta Bhattarai
ugly duckling Posted on 26-Jul-02 10:23 PM

If I were you, I would not send my kids to all girls school, specially Mahendra Bhawan. Bichara keti haru, aafu ataune jatro bhado majnu parchha (for those living in the dorm). Ani, topi, bhoto silauna siknue parne. Every weekend, they watch hindi movies. All female teachers are addressed as "guruaama", old male teachers as "guruba", where as young male teachers as "sir." If you send your daughters to St. Mary's, I am not sure how much of nepali they will learn. But, they might forget to speak complete english sentences. "Last night, sky was doing gadang gudung, ani ma was so scared."

Good to hear that St. Xavier's is co-ed now. At least testosterone loaded teenagers don't have to walk across all the way to the basketball court just to get a glimpse of St. Mary's chicks. Poor Budanilkantha ka boka haru still don't have that privilege.
ha ha Posted on 27-Jul-02 09:56 AM

What crap are you writing about? How dare you write such things about St. Marians-St. Mary's has been producing competent professionals with excellent English. I doubt if girls from other schools can comment about St. Mary's girls and the way the speak and behave. St. Mary's is still the best!!
By the way, don't you know that Bushanilkantha has turned co-ed. Get your facts right. I have attended both St. Mary's and Budhanilkantha and they are the best schools in the country.
Sanjay Posted on 27-Jul-02 11:02 AM

Where mitra,

i wish u take care of the opinion by Desh Bhakta and School finder above. I totally agree with them. I wish ur children get a very good education, reach the summit of academia and u be proud of them.

but let me remind u that ur children suld get a kind of education which is not just degree but decent sense towards the society and value towards education. I doubt if they will get it if u send them to the very known (and above mentioned) many schools that run for business. I think the best education is one that makes the children decent and modest towards others,,very social. See one of the product of the good considered schools (Mary's and Budhanilkantha) our Ha Ha mitra,, he/she went to these two schools and says they are the best schools in all over Nepal (i feel pity on u,, ws that the education u got from ur so called best schools,,,, afnoo badai chadai garnee, ani aruko chahii saab khattam). Dear Ha Ha mitra,, the school u said are good but this does not imply that there are no other good schools and they are only the best school in Nepal. ANd u seem to be focussing in good english speaking,, that exists no where these days. believe me,, most of the good academicains in nepal came from the countryside.

So i wish my "Where" mitra's children dont grow up in such a way that they don say that the things they have and enjoyed is the best. rather be very social, decent and a proud of all.

u have been living aboad,, and m sure ur kids will not enjoy the life in KTM, its too noisy. crouded, polluted. Sending to a school in the country side would be a good environment for them to enjoy. There is a good school (perhaps a mission school), somewhere in Bandipur (has a hostel). Pls explore the possibilities. Still ur choice is the final. Age is not a problem to send u children to boarding.. I was sent to hostel when i was 4,, lived all my life away from my parents.

Ma chahi afnoo children lai KATH school ma na padaunee,, tho i have not married till now (ha ha ha)

gud luck to find a good school

Hey "ha ha" girl,

Are you so insecure that if somebody writes a few negative words about St. Mary's, you start frothing all over your mouth with rage? Are the drops of sweat tickling your forehead, your fingers shivering, your chest heaving up and down with short breath, your eyebrow furrowed, the bridge of your nose wrinkled. Hehehehe.

But seriously, is there any SMS grad out in the world who have made a name for herself? Now, looking at the end result, why do SMS girls think they are so much superior to the ladies from other schools. And not only that, at the same time, feel so insecure about it.

Oh Gawd, this is too easy.
Nams Posted on 27-Jul-02 05:18 PM

Where,
I would definitely try St. Mary's or Rato Bangala. I am a sms product and I assure u that it's one of the best schools in Kathmandu. People are very friendly and co-operative. They have different extra activities like debate, sports, poem contest, essay writings, competition, scouts, LTS..just to make students active in all areas. I remember some students coming from US and they adjusted very well. I am sure it's going to be tough for your kids for sometime but eventually they will be comfortable..there's a very friendly atmosphere.
I would suggest Rato Bangala too because most of my cousins went there and they really liked it. There concept of teaching is similar to the schools in US.
U will definitely have to look deep because your decision is going to make a huge difference in your daughters life.

Where,
Best school for foreign return is Loncoln. I know you said you wanted to teach them Nepali, you can always send them to Lincoln, and get Nepali tutor at home. If you are going for only 9 months , they will learn more that way anyways. I went to Lincoln for 11 and 12th grade , after school in India, it was very good. Everyone is friendly, and the faculty/ parents relationship is good. They really care about the child's effort/etc. Getting in October wotn matter either b/c they start in September, so they will only miss one month. In Nepali school , they will miss alot of time. Anyhow good luck.

there r a lot of SMS products who have done extremely well in their fields and kept their names an d on't speak english and nepali like that. They r really nice an d gntle. They teach moral science too and t's a must in today's world where people r so rude.Tyo t atyaha admission napaune le kura katne matra ho .It's the best school for girls .And u can try xavier's too

Kathmandu University High School will soon emerge to be one of the best
school in and around Kathmandu. Now, run by a British, I heard. Now,
heading challenge BNKS in quality and vision, but, without using tax payer's
money from state 's treasury.

Lets see.
