The Editor thanks you for your letter, but regrets that he is unable to publish it. TLS contact us MY COMMENTS ARE :In his review of 'blood Against the Snows', Robert Macfarlane mentions that June 1 2001 massacre of many members of the Royal family in Nepal has brought an end to the Shah dynasty in Nepal. This is not true. The present King, Gynendra, is the younger brother of King Birendra and is a Shah. In fact 'Shah' is common enough that there are numerous families outside the Royal family that bear the same caste. Not only is Gynendra a Shah but that has also been the King of Nepal before at the ripe age of five. Had Mr. Macfarlane read the book carefully before reviewing it,he would certainly come across this fact. Gregson's supposedly 'superb'description of the massacre notwithstanding, many Nepalis deeply believe that Deependra was not responsible for the massacre and that they haven't been told the whole truth. Part of the blame for this state of affair lies with the Palace itself, which conducts its affairs in extreme secrecy, bordering on paranoia.
