================================================

Oh! Catmando... how beautiful?!

I belong to the 'Sunday Pop' generation. Then, Doordarshan was the 'foreign' channel to watch. I still remember 'ShahRukh' and his 'Fauji and Circus' acts. Mr. Bhusan Dahal and his 'Sunday Pop' was the 'only' program worth watching on NTV! I was watching some Nepali music videos last night and that Bhusan guy is a great director. The only problem was that most of his videos had the 'singer' painting or doing some kind of a sketch of somebody. Well, I shouldn't complain but like many of us... I guess I am still learning to appreciate the talents of others instead of bitching about it. Maybe, I am just a jealous guy.

Some of us who are here in the great country of Amrika think that the young people in Kathmandu are having a rough time or all of them want to go somewhere else. But that's not true! By the time, I was done with all the P & G flavors... CNN was transforming itself from a mere country news network to some kind of global channel. (BTW CNN sucks.. I prefer BBC!) We all watched the 'so-called' Gulf war, thinking the end of the world was near. The kids of today are not only smart but they know more than what I knew when I was fifteen. Kathmandu has changed and for some of you who still think of themselves as being 'modernized' or 'great' just for being in AMrika... you will be surprised when you get to Kathmandu.

Majority of the people now have personal computers and nearly all of these kids know more about flash and web designing than most of us here in Amrika. Well, so what... you might say but these kids are learning much more ... there and I sometimes wish I was born a few years late... why? I don't know ... but I think I would get a date more often than I used to do when I was sixteen.

Yes, there is the emergency... night checking by our great soldiers... and the bars @ THamel have dried up but there's still life and there are many stuffs to do ... on a Friday night! We all bitch about how life sucks back home but there are young folks who are doing something , even though there is so much corruption and frustration. It's not only about profits. WHat have I done so far? Worked in a gas station, sold some flowers near 53rd street... worked as a busboy in some Greek Restuarant in Flushing. Worked in a mini-golf, handing out candies to toddlers. WHat have I done? Nothing. And for those who have managed to work in some big company... good job!

There are kids who are involved in social service. From helping the street children to providing counselling and other services to people with HIV. Some people talk about how there is no life in Kathmandu. THere is nothing to do! Well... have your ever lived in Kathmandu? No, there is nothing wrong with living in Rolpa or Palpa. You might think there isn't much to do in Nuwakot, but if you ask a guy from Nuwakot ... he might have a different answer. What the hell are you talking about? I don't know but it's like a Nepalese guy from New York telling another Nepaleseguy in Kentucky... that there is nothing but rednecks there. After living ten 'amitabh' meaning 'angry young man' years in America.. I have come to realize that I should not judge anyone, any place or anything unless I know the whole picture. I didn't say that .... some bum I met in a Greyhound bus station ... gave me the advice after I handed him a smoke.

There is no such thing as a bad place or 'there is nothing to do' environment. I am living in this place... where I always thought that 'it really sucked' but after three years of smoking weed and being angry... I now venture out and after all... this ain't a bad place. There are 120 bars, 200 restuarants, 30 art galleries and 490 million-dollar homes . And why the hell was I angry? Maybe because... I didn't live in one of them big houses and didn't get no invitation to the annual charity ball @ this great local art museum!

New York is a great place... but while I was there... it really sucked. New York is a great place for Paris Hilton but not for some Paketmaar like me... why? Because I was lazy and Ghamandi... and unlike many who went to New York and worked hard (not just washing dishes but making their dreams come true!)... I just stood there and expected opportunities to come my way and when it didn't... I fled and I am still on the run!

I guess it's about the Money! Some 'Bhukka' tourists complain that Nepal isn't what it is said to be. And all I have to say for these jokers is 'Well... America isn't that great either when I have 40 bucks in my pocket and the Desi bhai motel wants to charge me 50 bucks for a room just used by a couple in a hurry a few hours ago!

Yes... there are people who are having fun because their papas are netas and Sarakari hakims but give the rest of the other folks... a big kit-kat break. There are only 205 MPs and maybe a thousand of Bada-hakims!... Now... are you telling me that the other 100,000 (maybe more) young Kathmanduites who are having or trying to have fun, work and enjoy life (even after all the daang-doong!) are the children of these corrupted officails! Nope.... and I wasn't born in Kathmandu and maybe.... I am what they call it here... 'a transplant' but I still think it's a great place to be.... well, like in all big cities around the world, you need some dough too!

There are young folks who are opening travel agencies even though they know very well that the tourism thing is crashing like Nasdaq. There are folks who are investing in small businesses even though they know very well that the desh ko situation is as rocky as Rocky Bilbao(?).. so are they dumb and stupid? No, they are brave and they want to face the challenge... after all, what's more sweet than gaining experience! I am a coward. I am stuck here, doing nothing and I am scared to go back but hope someday (few months I guess!), I will have the courage to pack my bag and return to great old Catmando and do something, make a difference.

Would I be talking like this if I was working for IBM or MER, C, JPM? No... maybe I am just great @ bitching about everything! Or Maybe I am just a great loser but we all have to do what we need to do...right! And maybe Swami Puntey was right when he said... "you have no idea what you are taking about!"
