Senior journalist and the founder of Nepal Press Institute (NPI) Bharat Dutta Koirala has won this year's Ramon Magsaysay Awards, the Asian equivalent of the Nobel Prize.
Koirala is among six Asians who have been given the award. The award in journalism has been presented to Koirala in recognition of his contribution to the development of mass media in Nepal.
"I am extremely overjoyed, this is an honour for both the country and the media," Koirala said. He is the second Nepali to receive the award after Mahesh Chandra Regmi who bagged the Magsaysay Award in 1977 for journalism, literature and creative and communication arts.
