Wait! isn't it too early for us to expect from a baby ?
def Posted on 30-Jul-02 11:09 AM

A baby is born and we are hoping and praying that he won't turn out to be like this and that. For me, this is a sad day for nepali women. If the monarchy is to be intact, we won't see a Queen as a head of state in our lifetime. There had been debates (?) right after the tragic events of last year for constitutional amendment regarding line of succession of the throne. Any changes? NO.

If discrimination like this can happen within the first family of Nepal, equal pay for a same job for women will have to wait for another century or two.

Newborn prince declared Shree Panch Nava Yubaraj

King Gyanendra Tuesday declared the first son of Crown Prince Paras and Crown Princess Himani Shree Panch Nava Yubaraj, a Royal Palace announcement said. An equivalent English title was not mentioned.

He is the second in line of succession to the Throne. Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba Tuesday extended congratulations and best wishes to members of the royal family, including King Gyanendra and Queen Komal, on the royal birth.

The Home Ministry declared Wednesday a national holiday to celebrate the occasion. The Ministry also issued a general appeal to illuminate government offices, temples other offices and homes Tuesday evening to celebrate the occasion.

The Home Ministry called for illuminations on the sixth day of the birth or "chaiti" when the Prince's horoscope is drawn and also on the 11th day when he will be named. nepalnews.com br July 30

Bandh.

def, I definitely agree with you. The royal family, if it chose to do so, can become a model for the rest of the country and wouldn't it be nice to see a woman in charge of the country for a change? Even the possibility of one would be nice.

I commend you for asking whether we should indeed have a queen. But how can a family culture steeped in the kind of repressive traditions that perseveres with strict and subservient gender roles really equip a girl child born in that family to lead the nation? We have already seen how even with all the privledges and opportunities that men in the royal family are bestowed, they still fail miserably. Who is to say women would do any better? Simply making it possible for a girl to be an heir to the throne might, in this instance, just mean that she is being set her up for failure. And Nepal (and women leaders/future queens) along with her.

When girls are simply bred to marry and breed, how can you expect them to rise and lead a nation? I think Nepal has a long way to go still.

What needs to change within the royal family? The royal family as an institution is debauched, corrupt, and repressive. Will it change? When?

But we must also ask, "how CAN it change?" Do they get real, honest and unbiased counsel? The family is surrounded by sycophants who want to perpetuate the whole jagir culture... the hajur sarkar, ho sarkar, bowing and kowtowing...

I feel terribly sorry for the family. There they are barricaded within those palace walls, not there by choice but birth, huddled together, relying on each other and not being able to trust anyone. And most courtiers and officials around them are just ready to jump ship anytime, ready to stab them in the back probably to save their own skin.

How can they even have the breath room to contemplate a real change, to take risks (for change means taking risks), when people like the maoists are bent on not only dissolving the monarchy, but probably are out to execute the entire family in some sick modern version of the french revolution?!

Some would not even wish a newborn well. Poor child. Have some feeling people. These too are people. (Obvioulsy kind of dummed down by generations of inbreeding, but people still!) Let us hope they are surrounded by better couselors and advisors than our late King Birendra... let us hope King Gyanendra learns that every thing that happens in the famly should not amount to a national holiday. (And judging from many of your responses, obvioulsy in this climate, not even the birth of a future king deserve a celebration.)

Let us hope we are not reverting back to the 80s royalist heyday when every day news headlines talked about a royal family member cut a ribbon at some ceremony, while the reality of the atrocities committed against dissenters never made even the back page of the newspaper.

Let us pray that this child is blessed with love and guidance and will bring hope and peace to the country.
well-wisher Posted on 30-Jul-02 08:44 PM

A very good one Rani. People indeed need to change their stinky perspective. The royal family deserves a break. give them a chance, people, for god sake!
rajabadi Posted on 30-Jul-02 09:59 PM

If a king is sorrounded by a group of people who continuously say about usurping
power and snapping democracy, how can that king get sympathy from people?

How can a king survive by ruling against the will of his own people?

People display inertia only to a limit. The king can promote institute only to that
limit. Not more.

People are hesitant to extend the congratulation to the new born, because people
feel that the new born needs sympathy rather than congratulation now. He is
being born in the house that has a history of violence. He is being taken care
by the people who also once took care of a murderer prince who almost wiped
out everybody. What is there for this child? A baggage of distrust to carry on.

Wish him a power to cope with the comlication of his future. His future which he
is going to build less, his father and grandfathers are going to make more.
FK is an IDIOT! Posted on 31-Jul-02 10:36 AM

What kind of an attitude is that, especially with a "BAAAAADDDDD" English like your's? Man Chill out. The baby is not even 2 days old and you're calling the baby a "Bastard?" Please do us all a favor and disappear from the face of the Earth. Scums like you make for a miserable future for Nepal. Those who do not respect others will seldom gain respect. Me, I am just a person who will wait to pass any judgements on anyone. Let him grow up to be at least of Prince Harry's age; let's find out if he is going to start smoking crap; then we will go ahead and judge our newest prince at that time. For now, treat the baby as any baby in the world deserves to be treated.

As for all of you who are advocating for a chance for a woman to be the "Head of the State" in our country, I commend your thoughts. I wish that would happen. We'll wait and see. I do not think it's going to happen in our lifetime though.

Peace and FK, try to be happy for the family. For once, forget the fact that Paras is our Crown Prince; Paras and Himani are regular parents who just happened to have the most important babu be born into their family. Show some respect you Idiot.
