A headline Hong Kong’s leading but waning English newspaper South China Morning Post on July 31, 2002 issue: Basic Law Protects Right to Re-enter SAR, Court Rules When I started to read this story I immediately guessed that it is a story of a Nepali because this not the only such case. Among the thousands of Nepalese at least one has won this case in the court. Many Nepalese spouses are refused entry in SAR city simply because their spouses’ income is only a fraction of Tung Chee Hwa’s salary. Summary of the story: Mr. Gurung Kesh Bahudur was a Gurkha soldier in H.K. until he retired in 1994. He was allowed to stay in H.K. until Jan 9, 1999 as a dependant of his H.K. born wife. He visited his homeland in 1997 but was refused reentry by the ”world class” city. After five years’ struggle he has won the battle against the racist and biased government of this “world class” city. While many khaires are working with tourist visa because they are allowed to stay couple of months after each entry with out any question. On the other hand, Nepalese need to apply for visa and most of them are rejected. Any comment?
