Yea, it looks like since 2500 years, all we (our ancestors) did was insignificant, we
born and we died. Only Buddha remained, as a light of Asia.

Oh D&D's, you are welcome. After all, life is just halla. What else is there? Furthermore, sometimes there is more truth and sincererity in halla and joke than in the contrived pensiveness. Dillibajar ka bajele ekdin lekhethe, "Satya sojho hunchha."

Gokulji ta Mahakavi Devkota ko fan hunu hunchha jasto chha ni ! Devkota's 'lines' can be found in many of your postings. 'Satya sojho hunchha', 'Pahadi jiwan' Aashadhko Pandhra' etc. words reminded me devkota's LAXMI NIBANDHA SANGRAHA' . I am also fan of 'this essay collections'. I had so many favourite quotations from this book but I almost forgot now.

Yekantama chamkanu nai chandramako gun ho(lines from 'lekhnath paudyal')

'Ashadhko Pandhra' is one of the most favourite essay to me.

Other essays I like very much from this book are 'Pahadi Jiwan', 'Adikavi bhanubhakta', 'Sadhuko Mahtmya{Vairagya(?)}', 'Gosankundako Yatra', 'Veerharu', 'Satya sojho hunchha', ....

I think Dadimko Rukhner, Sandhe, Prabhuji Malai Bhendo Banau' essays are masterpieces from Devkota.
Gokul Posted on 06-Aug-02 06:14 PM

Manashalu,
Thanks for comments. Yes, for me he belongs to the category of gods: Dev Kota.
In my childhood, I never missed kavita goshthis arranged in his birth anniversary (Laxmi Puja). For me, Tihar was interesting because of these goshthis and not because of other stuffs.

I consider "Laxmi Nibandha Sangraha" as the most beautiful piece of prose writing in Nepali. "Bhikhari" contains amazingly lucid poems. His poem "Baadal" reminds one of Shelley's "Cloud" and "Gaayin tinle ghasinya geet" of Wordsworth's "Lucy". His sense of sound and rhythm is absolutely incredible which is manifest in all of his chhandobaddha (metrical) poems.

Aayo Brahma agadi sirjana hunda Omkara vistara maa
Jhalkyo jhaljhala tarakavali bani sadkalpanabhaasa ma
Herdei ranga lidein sadhain uchhalidein bandei gayo jivana
He He Vishwa Viraat Mahakavi chhudei jhankaara mero mana.

Being captivated by the power and beauty of classical poems like this, I have little reason to doubt that Panini's grammar originated from the sound of Lord Shiva's damaru:

ayi un lil rik ...

Kabi Gokul Dev !
I agree with NK. It's very hard to read and interpret the words. You could write in devnagari and post it as an attachment.
NK Posted on 07-Aug-02 08:39 AM

The meaning of :

Bhranti=
Bindo= (as in "babuko bindo)

??

Thanks
Nepe Posted on 07-Aug-02 09:06 AM

For NK,

Bhranti= illusion, confusion
Bindo= legacy
Gokul Posted on 07-Aug-02 09:18 AM

Meanings:

Kamal pitta - Jaundice
Skhaleet - attritted
Bhraanti - Illusion
Bindo - Job handed through tradtions. "Babu ko bindo thamnu" means follow the footsteps one's father and do what he did for livelihood. Reference to Nepal's varna byawastha.

Dagdha - Burnt
Stabdha - Remember "stupefied, petrified, mortified..."?
Vikalit - Dukhi, grieving

I am not good in Nepali typing and that was the reason the poem was posted in romanized form. My apology for the trouble.

DHUMBASSE (DUMBASS) Posted on 07-Aug-02 11:24 AM

Gokulji!
No apology needed . It is a great peice of work and your creation is as always 'adwitiya'. it was very simple and easily understood, each word by word.
My idea is if you go back to it , as a good writer , you would be tempted add or change or do somthing to it , which is not gonna look good. So please leave it as it is. For those who forgot their mother tongue only in couple of 'Yugs'=years living in Amerika, mata Sarashwati will guide them. Do not worry.

In Gokul's poem, Bhupi is having a conversation with Devkota.

Image of today's Nepal captured with an amazing accuracy and fine detail.

But like a photographer, Gokul lets only his picture speak. He prefers silence for himself. But again, does a kabi have to be an activist - to borrow Gokul's own words in reply to Ashu in reply to Kabi in response to Ashu in action ? (ref. A reply to Kabi)
Gokul Posted on 07-Aug-02 07:51 PM

Kabi,
Thanks for your compliments but it is obvious that I don't deserve such a high praise for it is just like calling a curious student (who sometimes may ask some interesting questions) Einstein. So let us stop this here.

As you have noticed, I do believe in art for art's sake. Although I have my own political conviction, I do not want it to interfere with what I try to create. Creativity is beyond activism so I find Tolstoy's "Resurrection" far superior to Gorky's "Mother".

Pure art is like pure mathematics, the study of fields, rings, topology, and algebra. Pure mathematicians don't care whether there is any use of these ideas or not. For the sheer joy of beauty and intellect, they think, they create. It is the applied mathematicians who look at the ideas of pure mathematicians and try to use it for the benefit of human society. So to decry pure mathematicians is obviously ridiculous.

Similarly, to demand activism from those poets and writers who create just for the joy of creation alone is just like forcing a pure mathematician to go for data collection and number crunching. It is gross injustice. If some writers want to become activist, that is fine. But if their activism distorts their sense of pure creativity, then they are punishing themselves.
Activism is limited by time and space while pure creation is timeless. This is not to say that activism is useless. But once it serves its purpose, it becomes defunct.

I am truely moved Gokul ji. As I read your poem, it was exactly like the way others described it, that you let the images speak. Your use of words is sparse. You lines clipped. Such craft.

Very nice!!
fan of gokul Posted on 09-Aug-02 09:11 PM

Absolutly, Gokul ji! There is no other existence for an artist other than to express! Otherwise, weilding words is just wordsmithing and "making art" mere craftsmanship! I appreciate the difference between "Because you want and becaue you exist because of your art" and "because I can!" It is obviously!

You are good!
Applied Kabi Posted on 11-Aug-02 01:04 PM

Let’s take a light detour. I am trying to illustrate the dichotomy of art along pure and applied fields by citing a comic (or tragic if you like) news of today from Udayapur VDC in Banke. Can we not refer to the ritual *vulgar* dances and nude ploughing by our women as applied art ?

-------------------------------------
Ritual nude ploughing for rain
About 200 women from a community in Banke district, who depend on rain water for farming came out nude and ploughed their fields at midnight in Indrapur VDC on Tuesday to appease rain god Indra, RSS reported from Kohalpur in western Nepal.
The women locked up the gates and shut the windows of their houses with their husbands inside, and ploughed the fields at midnight chanting hymns.
Similarly, women of Udayapur VDC also resorted to ploughing the fields accompanied by vulgar dances in the anticipation of rain. nepalnews.com am Aug 11
