As I am anticipating this art event Bichalit Bartman is going to leave a deep mark in the conscience of Nepali civil society forcing it to reflect and gain new oorja, I am proud and thrilled to see the names of three of my favorite hastis from Sajha organizing/participating in the event. I am sure other fellow Sajhaites are also participating. My best wishes for the grand success of the event.

Now, some minor comment about linguistics of the naming. As Gokulji had pointed out in a thread, the English translation ‘Disillusioned Present’ given by the organizers does not exactly correspond to the Nepali name ‘Bichalit Bartaman’. However, if we are to focus more on the message than the linguistic, then it is fine. Yet, I wonder whether the same kind of picture is provoked by these qualifiers in minds of each of us. I wonder what exactly organizers meant it to be. Take Bichalit bartaman, for example. If it means ‘deviated’ present, then It implies that we were in the right track for good sometime and we are now briefly off-the-track. The truth is we are still struggling to find the right track. I would like to quote from Gokul’s poem by the same title, which paints the picture of our present so precisely.

Aunsi maa junkiri khojdai gareko,
Ani marusthala maa paniko thopo,
Dagdha, Stabdha, Trasit, Vichalit
Avyakta Peeda maa maun, vikalit.

I think here Gokul’s use of Vichalit goes with ‘startled’ as matched by other three preceding adjectives .. Dagdha, Stabdha, Trasit, Vichalit. Very true. Gokul’s poem does not make claim that we had/have found the right track. My own view is that our chaotic present is just the reflection of our inability to change, inability to initiate change, refusal to the change and the denial of our inertia. So appropriate is the name ‘disillusioned present’ (eluded present) for our time and the art event. Lets hope the event will encourage us to see the unseen, to realize the hidden, to question the unquestioned and to find the track. Astoo.

Nepeji,

I think 'disillusioned' is not only not suitable English word, but it is probably exactly
opposite of what 'vichalit' tries to suggest. Disillusioned is free of illusion, somewhat
clear in meaning. Vichalit somewhat suggests 'aberration', or 'deviation' from the
norm. While the Nepali name suggests that the present is merely deviant, so
there is optimism for future(which is the theme I surely would like to share with
everyone), English translation fails to do justice with this. Baatho banna khojeko
maa sorry:-)

Now I realize I was in an illusion about the meaning of 'disillusioned'. Thank you Biswo, for correcting me. I suppose the organizers were using it mistakenly, like I was, for ‘illusioned’ (if vauable=invaluable, why not illusioned=disillusioned !).

And I share your optimism for future. But I am still comfortable saying we are still struggling to find the path. But again, it depends on what we are talking about.

It was great to see your name and the names of Paschim, Ashu and Puru in the announcement of the event.

Hi Nepe, Biswo, Gokul et al,

Thank you for your good wishes and support from overseas.

The guys at suskera dot com deserve a big applause for mobilizing so many of you
to get involved in this venture from afar. Thank you, suskera folks and thanks to all whose names -- even though you are far away from Nepal -- appear above!!

On a happy note, another sajha visitor Amar Gurung and his friends have offered to help out by creating a Web site of "bichalit bartaman". Please wait for for further announcement to this effect.

Next Sunday or so, I will let you know all know how the event went. Meantime, the organizing committee is working pretty hard.
