In the time spent online since 1996, in my view, the best online community there is has got to be Epinions.com. It is not like chat. It is not like a message board. Here you meet real people, many of high intellectual calibre, professionals, people running for Congress, students at major academic institutions, people from abroad. Some of the liveliest debates I have ever had, I had here. Sajha.com is a great place to meet Nepalis, and the SEBS website a great place to meet Budhanilkantha graduates.
