There is no difference in the activities when the government loots computers from a newspaper office, locks up the editors or makes them disappeared, and looting of bank money by the rebels while it is being transferred. Such works would not help enhance public faith upon the government. Rather, people would be more sympathetic toward the cause of the rebels. It is the duty of laws, not state, to protect the press. There should be a feeling that laws protect press freedom and the state honors such laws.

There is no one to protect the press right now from the threats of the government and rebels. Most of such cases don't reach the courts. Even if they reach the courts, both the government and rebels don't honor the court. As such, press freedom is being encroached upon gradually both by the government and rebels, whoever gets stronger. Now the time has come for political parties and media persons to be aware toward this situation. An environment should be created in which those who violate law get punishment as per the law.

Besides the problem of encroachment of its rights, Nepali press is also facing the challenge of becoming irrelevant. The press will lose its relevance if the government doesn't respond to it or the society doesn't accept what it writes.
