I recently graduated and started working at this American company of 7-8 people. They're call Americans who don't know much abou the Asain world. All the time they talk about stuff that I can't relate to. So most of the times I stay quite and don't talk, eventhough I'm not a quite person. Now-a-days they don't even care if I'm there or not. I'm just wondering if other people go through this kind of experience or it something wrong with me. Please share your thoughts!!!

I had have same experience with those freak'n white poeple. Mostly they would like to talk and chat whatever topics. I understand it is hard to keep in circle but wise thing is keep job related work sound and possible, make more interactive with them. It would be nice for you and any future circumstances. Hope you will make it and keep your faith. Good luck!

Your situation is not unique, however you have to take an immediate action to CORRECT it...yes it is a problem that needs CORRECTION.
You might have already found out that our culture gives priority to educational development where as western culture gives upper most respect to personality development (ever wonder why they give their kids fish as a pet first then finally give dogs when they successfully keep the fish for a while?)
Its best when you let it go naturally, but sometimes situations beckons us to give a little 'force' on how we behave. You HAVE to break the ice every now and then. Start by asking how their weekend was and stuff. U can talk about family, friends, vacation, weather but don't just go to their cubicle and start blabbering. May be, you can ask them where they go for lunch and sneak in with them to a place sometimes.
Fellow Sajhans will give you more suggestions, but the point I want to make is that you shouldn't continue the way you're going. But! start slowly and also remember that you may never be their best buddy, you just wanna feel comfortable at your office.

My experience:
Man, then you have to learn and know followings:
-) How to play Gulf and famous players names
0) How to play Baseball ,and famous players names
1) How to paly football and famous players names
2) How to play Basket ball and famous players names
3) Famous Local Bars and Grills, and famous beers and Liquiors
4) Hot Hollywood Actors/Actresses
5) Brintney Spears (hope i will dream her tonight!)
6) Always say "America is Great country" and "people are very nice even they dicriminate you"
Man, but do not talk Political stuffs like you do with nepali dudes.........
and last, try to improve your english pronounciation...and change your nepali name like
Sham Prasad to just " Sam "......Hope it works...

I am agree with krish. just watch the games and learned the names of the players. listen to them one day and find out what kinda topics they mostly talk about, next day you go and find out in the news paper and inernet and talk to them same topics. you'll be a'raight. I had same situation when i worked with white fellas. I used to say oh i don't like base ball, foot ball blah blah. they never care me. when I started to talk about Tiger woods, Vijay singh, other plyers. they excited to talk to me. pasa

then don't use it if you hate it! what kind of behavior is that? the word "exotic" itslef is a racist word. by defining something as "exotic" especially by dominating culutre, it gives power to peer into, poke, shake an "exotee" without their consent. Got it?

Most americans talk about Sports and weater at any place/time. Keep yourself updated on those topics, and you will be just fine.

and yah.start with this most annoying thing
"HI, HOW YOU DOING BUD" ( well, make that fake smile like they do and say it as if u mean it ;) (like we care bhitra ta ;)
Well, and bout Nepal, jus tell them weed grows in your backyard, Next thing you know, your cubicle is gonna be their hang out place ;)

I think Amrican Brothers and sisters are very sensitive towrards smell, because I noticed most of my frens making comments on one Indian dude who I think used to not shower or use deodrants and use hair oil or maybe not change his undergarments...or something, and on top of that he would smell like Indian curry. so guys and gals becareful when you cook, leave the closets and bedroom doors closed.
