Mercantile system hacked Himalayan News Service Kathmandu, August 13: Since the noon of August 11 all servers of Mercantile including leading portal servers and chat servers have been down. “This is just a technical hitch due to internal system failure and things will resume to normal tomorrow,” said officials at Mercantile, denying any other possible reasons for the setback on Tuesday. However an online report has said that Mercantile Office System (MOS) has been hacked as the final part of TRAP THE CAT. According to the report, the flaws on MOS will directly affect more than 54 lease lines (including Very Small Aperture Terminal-VSAT customers) and some few local Internet Service Providers (ISPs). “We have not been able to receive any e-mails since past 24 hours and I have had to call my clients overseas to check on the contents of the e-mails that were lost,” said one of their customers. “I have been asking them to e-mail me in my hotmail account.” This is the second serious incident after the similar episode last October, when a leading ISP-Worldlink was attacked and hacked severally. The entire server was down for more than three days. The TRAP THE CAT – l was launched on October 4, 2001. Major attacks on government websites of Nepal caused severe damage. The attacks included attacking of more than 120 websites including wlink.com.np. The mission was terminated in October 24th, 2001 after one of its members, Sarose Joshi, was arrested for entering and deleting Nepal Police server files. He was released on November 12th, 2001. A note found on the net states, “This is a good lesson to our administrator to not take any of Nepalis hackers lightly.”
