Can anyone tell me what the term "Drivers" in a computer stands for ? what do they mean when they say "..driver for a modem, utilities, keyboard, vga, ide, audio etc ". What exactly does a driver do ? and i wonder how it works when downloaded from the internet. thanks for the response in advance.

U might have known, a computer hardware is just a piece of junk without software running it. How would a mouse know how to understand a command that you have assigned? Well, the manufacturer of the mouse will write a piece of code, usually in C, C++ or even assembly/native/machine languages (they are faster); which instructs the mouse to perform the way it is supposed to. HP puts the definition as: "A driver is a piece of software used by your computer to communicate with a particular peripheral. There are drivers for printers, the video, sound, modems, etc." Hope that helps.
