Here is Part III of Mahabharat, the greatest epic in the world.

In the previous part, Santanu re-met his son, Devavrat. But he also fell in love with Matsyagandha, and he wants to marry her. But Matsyagandha's father proposes a strange condition, his daughter's sons should be the next king of Hastinapur! Santanu hasn't got the guts to tell Devavrat about this. What will happen next? Read along to find out...

Chapter I continued...
Devavrat knew his father’s state of mind. Therefore, he met Dasaraj and pleaded with him to get Matsyagandha married to the king. Dasaraj was adamant. “ Are you prepared to give up the throne for the sake of the happiness of your father?” he asked.
Devavrat didn’t hesitate. “If it can bring happiness to my father, I don’t want the throne. I am prepared to give up. I swear”, he said. However, Dasaraj wasn’t convinced. He asked Devavrat.
“O! Devavrat, it is easy for you to say that you don’t want the throne. However, you will get married and have children. Later on, your children will also have children. And if they claim their right over the throne, what would be the fate of Matsyagandha’s children?”
Devavrat agreed with Dasaraj’s thinking. He felt that it was a fair question. He thought for a while and said:
“Respected Sir, have no doubts about this. I hereby swear that I will be a bachelor throughout my life and I will never get married!”
This decision by young Devavrat to lead all his life alone, for the sake of his father’s happiness drew appreciation form all the Surs1. This vow came to be known as ‘Bhishm’s Vow’ (“Bhishm Pra-ti-gya”) Devavrat was henceforth called as Bhishm.
Bhishm returned to the palace and performed the marriage of Matsyagandha and his father. In the presence of hundreds of citizens, he again proclaimed that he was giving up his rights to the throne. Highly pleased with his son’s sacrifice, Santanu embraced Bhishm and blessed him with “Iccha Marani2”. “Let not death near you as long as you want it” he wished.

Chapter 2
Santanu married Matsyagandha and led a happy life. Subsequently, Matsyagandha gave birth to two sons: elder one was Chitrangandh, and the younger one was Vichitravir. After the demise of Santanu, Bhishm crowned Chitrangandh as the king. However, the new king died shortly thereafter, and Bhishm coroneted Vichitravir as the new king of Hastinapur. However, since Vichitravir was still young, Bhishm ruled the kingdom on his behalf. There was peace and prosperity everywhere. Several years passed. Vichitravir was of marriageable age now.

Bhisma (I guess you can say Bhisma instead of Bhism:)) pratigya (proclamation) has left a great impact in the whole of mahabharat. This was the single focal point that gave mahabharat the complexity that is enjoys like no other!

There u go again desh bhakta bro...
bravo once again...i think i liked this one better!! it was so much concise and yet had so much to tell........and three days gap is a better time..
U STILL DIDN"T CONSIDER MY PROPOSITION....just to add a lil bit of spice......TYO SAMAYA le agadi bhanne MONOLOGUE pani bhanne ho ki?like in tv series k..would jus help to increase the broadband... might jus give it a sweet twist..jus a oys thought ;)

Please give credit if this is a copy & paste from the Internet. I'm not undermining your talents, but Ganesha, Bhishm et all words are used by Indians. Translating Mahabharat is huge and too holy, so one should not take credit for just copying and pasting it.

Hey all!
Thank You for your cooperation and encouragement. I guess I should reduce the due date again. From now on, I'll be posting Mahabharat in every 2 days!! Thanks again.
P.S. I'll be considering oys_chill's proposal + the spelling of Bhishma+ the longening of the stories!

Well, Desh_Bhakta_Bhattarai ji, the names of the two sons of Satyavati are Chitrangad and Vichitravirya and not as you have written. Not very sure about Chitrangad though, but very positive about Vichitravirya.
