Following are some the things I have found weird/funny in the US. Please add yours to the list. Sarcasm IS intended, so no justifications please !

1. Waving your hand to *thank* all drivers who yield to you.
In Nepal, we.....

2.Greeting all strangers you meet in streets "Hiyu dooin?" and sometimes starting to chat with them as if you've known each other for years.

3.Holding the doors open for people following 10 feet behind you.

4. Using "while you were away" stickers. Heights of sophictication..?

5. americans *telling* you when they are upset at you. Sometimes it is fun to see how they act when they are mad at someone/something.
In Nepal, do you remember anyone telling you "Ma ta ahile risako chhu" if they are mad at you ? This country definitely has some clear/good communication ideas :)

6. People *thanking* the heroes of 9/11 more than moaning the lost of loved ones.

7. ....

8. ....

9. ....

Feel free to add more ..

haha i really enjoyed this one..so true!!!

well, the cool cliches and "MY BAD" are things that crack me up!

* I mean i always wonder, what is not cool in this country? but i haven't really been able to comprehend this coolness........nepal ma bhako bhaye,
"kasto chiso chass yaar ta??? haha......" cool? "aanch, ghacchi, daami, ambooo" i think we outrun amrikans when it comes to literature eh?

* And what's up with this MY BAD thing....I mean this is much more than a "buhari taking all the blames" ..i know i spilled the coffee on the table, the dude goes MY BAD..and i go.."NO NO, YOU HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH IT, I SPILLED THE COFFEE" and I AM NOT GOING TO GIVE YOU ANY WORDS OF "Its all rite dude"
haha now the similar scenario in nepal hard to imagine....chiya pokhyo.."maf gardinu dai, merai dos ho" "mero badmasi" ?? haha

I'd rather enjoy the outright rudeness(if u think so) in Nepal than bear with these fake Politeness people flaunt out here......
K garnu, jata gaye pani, yo maun ta NEPALI HO :)

In our library the head librarian has a poster above his door saying "Disturb me".

Can you imagine a head of any department in Nepal posting "Disturb me" sign.

I also like the way how the people here devote all attention to you when you need it. Untill your problem is solved they wo'nt entertain any other person no matter how important the other person is. Can't imagine that happening in Nepal.

To add to the so true list, here's my #7:

'Having a cake and eating it too'. Why is this phrase overly used here in US as if its a crime? It does not make sense if you buy a cake simply to look at it, or does it?

Of course you'll have to eat it! scarf it down rather... depending on the flavor.
baby duck Posted on 22-Aug-02 05:23 PM

galnextdoor. You are a bit dim up there, or is this just your cyber personae?

having a cake and eating it too means:

You can either keep a cake and look at and keep it intact. Or you eat it and make the cake a history. So you CANNOT have it and eat it at the same time? Got it? Think of chichi pani papa pani. That may help you. By the way was that your picture? Cool! :- ]

Baby Quack,
If you call differing opinions dumb, u've long way to learn.. after all u're just a 'BABY duck' quack quack...

But you did try hard to explain, so credit shall be given there. Guess what?- I'm still NOT convinced and still makes zero sense. Have you ever bought a cake to 'keep it intact'? Thats scary if you have. And yeah, 'chichi and papa' phrase, I see absolutely no greed in eating them both.

ps - Thats not me in the picture. I wish I was that beautiful... NOT.
sks Posted on 23-Aug-02 10:04 AM

baby duck, no offense, but u got it wrong. the reason 'having a cake and eating it too' is impossible is because they both mean the same thing. to 'have a cake' is exactly the same as 'to eat it'. u can do one or the other but not both at the same time.
fRank Posted on 23-Aug-02 10:11 AM

sks no offense but you said having a cake and eating it is the same.. and you also included that you cannot do both at the same time.. however when you eat a cake.. or rather when the cake goes to your tummy, it means you had a cake and it also means u ate a cake.. so doesn't really matter whether you eat it or have it.. it is still the same..and when you do one of those, it also means you have done the second one.. alright.
no offense
peace

maybe I should have put it this way - once u have 'had a cake', can u then 'eat it' too? hope this helped :)
