Hi, A common public concern in Kathmandu seems to be the lack of public space... especially green space, with the Tundikhel-Ratnapark area playing an increasingly important and crowded role in providing "breathing space" to the residents of the inner city. Yet... looking from the air, we see that there is plenty more green space in the city center... it is just not open to the public! The attached photo was taken out the plane window on a clear monsoon day a few weeks ago, looking south from somewhere over Lazimpat. Just below the clouds is Singhadurbar, Bhadrakali and the stadium. Then looking down, you see the army headquarter area, Tundikhel, Ratnapark Rani Pokhari... then the hotel area between Durbarmarg and Kantipath... and at the base of the picture that very large fenced in complex at the end of Durbar Marg where, we hear, a son killed his parents, siblings, and other relatives... a place that a year ago many people wanted to see opened up as a museum... a place that, if opened to the public, could double (or more) the amount of publicly available green space in the city... anyway, the picture speaks more than I could comment... btw, the other large green area in Kathmandu is in Chhauni, occupied by the army. One could ask whether moving the army out of the city and constructing a public park would not enhance the quality of life in Kathmandu.... Arnico.

...I have hundreds... taken over years of flying in and out of Kathmandu with a camera glued to the window... I fear posting too many at once in one thread because of the large file size. This one too I had to reduce in resolution to be able to post. What part of town do you want to see? Arnico.

Arnico thanks for that pic! A request: since you say you have many that you've accumulated over the years, how about if you could especially find two or three of the same place but taken over time. Maybe a tall order but heck one never knows with some resourceful people here. :) Whenever I see your name, some names spring up in my mind: chung moon, takeshi's sister anna, anna okawara, priya pandey etc. I didn't go to school with you guys. :)

dear arniko If possible, please send a set of photographs when overlapped covers whole Kathmandu city. I will post it in my http://www.kantipur.org/ as early as its ready for public access. As a researcher, I know very well how to acknowledge the materials that is not my original stuff but borrowed from someone else. No cheating. If possible, one day we can trace Avenue numbers and street numbers using your photographs and tell peoples to surf http://www.kantipur.org/ to trace where their destination is. I remember the night when I had a special guest in dinner party on the occasion of my marriage, who returned to his home after searching the house for 3 hours. We did not have telephone, the house number we gave him was so random, and the house was inside a small galli, that he apologized next day , "I tried it for almost 3 hours and returned". we know he did not lie, we also saw once his car passing very close to our place ................................ I wish I can serve the peoples of Kantipur through http://www.kantipur.org/ Your photogrphs can help me to create such data base. AS a civil engineer. I hope I can achieve it. hg.

arnico, great. Indeed, a picture's worth a thousand words. Do you have one zoomed on the royal palace ? Wouldn't mind more than one, really. And Godavri marble factory, and Chobhar (around Himal Cement) areas. Am I asking too much.

i, Thanks for the replies. I will have to ask for some patience, as I only have a very slow flatbed scanner and have a lot of work and travels in the coming week. I do have photos for most of what you are asking for (except perhaps Godavari marble... few planes fly close to Fulchoki)... will post as I get a chance. Suna, I have been doing just that of a few places... Tinkune (Baneswar) area is easy to photograph on each take-off... I have photos somewhere of that going back at least 12 years. But need to find them first! Hahooguru... a good idea, but will take time and effort to implement. Might be much faster with satellite photos or professional aerial photos (available on the web as well, don't have URLs at the moment). My photos are all out of side windows... slanted views... and each from a different location (as the plane was moving)... so it will be almost impossible to stitch them together without a huge effort of changing their shapes and sizes... I appreciate your citing sources, but fear that I am not yet ready to e-mail you my library of photos... I doubt I will have time to scan all of them in the next few months... VillageVoice: yes, I do have a picture that goes closer, but it was in worse weather... will try to find it anyways. The best one I have is on a slide... and I don't have the equipment to scan that (besides the fact that it is sitting 11 time zones away right now). Suna again: as you know people I went to school with you probably know quite a bit about me. Yet you hide behind a pseudonym so I have no idea who you are... isn't that kind of unfair??? :-) Arnico
