Works on Int’l Buddhist University in the offing BHAIRAHAWA, Aug 24 Works on establishment of the International Buddhist University are to commence prior to the second World Buddhist Summit to be held in December at Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha, the apostle of peace. Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation and Chairman of Lumbini Development Trust (LDT) Bal Bahadur K. C. informed the LDT meeting today that the process for the establishment of the university would be done through an ordinance if needed. His Majesty’s Government is ready to implement all the decisions adopted by the first World Buddhist Summit, he said, noting that the first summit held in 1998 had endorsed a resolution pertaining to the establishment of the proposed university. He disclosed that a bill has been formulated and submitted to the Ministry of Education and Sports but the government has decided to proceed with the works through an ordinance as the house of representatives stands dissolved at present. The executive committee meeting of LDT has also decided to halt the on-going construction works in and around Lumbini that are in contravention of the Lumbini master plan. Construction of mosques, churches, hotels, industries and factories outside the Lumbini Development Area which do not conform the master plan will be stopped, minister K.C. said after the conclusion of the meeting. According to minister K.C., the meeting also decided to lay out a circular around sacred garden area in accordance with the Lumbini masterplan and to remove other buildings constructed at variance with the masterplan. Construction of Mayadevi temple will be completed prior to the upcoming World Buddhist Summit. The meeting also decided to erect a 9-feet high boundary wall on the east side of Lumbini Development Trust within the current fiscal year. An approximate 400-metre portion of the boundary wall has so far been constructed. National Assembly Member Laxmi Das Manandhar, LDT vice-chairman Omkar Prasad Guachan and its member-secretary Janak Lal Shrestha were present at the meeting chaired by minister K.C
