From tomorrow, my school starts. I am thinking how should I make most out of it. I am soliciting other people's idea or view in this matter. I know this topic is not so sexy as politics , or dating thing but I believe this topic is no less important either. I know many folks who visit this site are academically stellar. I want them to impart their secrets: how do they motivate themselves to go above and beyond the normal requirement, what are the things that students should not overlook while they are in college. Hey don't think your suggestion is not important. The very suggestion or input you put could make ones' future. So be generous and please please share .........

Jay...great question, there! I am going to take your thread seriously: To answer your question first...from the other thread; yes, I do work with kids in the public school system. That is why I keep saying "Keep it clean, kids, there are other ways to vocalize your frustrations..." ;) Heard/dealt with enough "inner city cussing"...not too impressed by it!!!! :) First.... Have a good sense of humour...never take things pesonally. It is easier to keep focused on things. Second...Discipline; Without discipline, nothing can be achieved. Work out a schedule and keep to it! Third...You are studying for yourself...that should be motivation enough. Fourth....keep your mind open; the world and people are truly amazing. Fifth....Keep your manners and language intact; it is easier to get along with professors and fellow students. Cuts your stress in half. Sixth...Even if you disagree, do so with a smile. Keep your dignity intact. Seventh...In your schedule work in a time for partying and fun....but not in the weekdays!! It will come back and bite you in the butt. Eighth...If you mess up, that is ok....LET IT GO!!!! Start again!!! Good Luck for this year. If you are asking this question...I know you guys will do well. PS...get off the internet unless it is school related ...research work (I'm in a grad research school so I know!)....others in moderation!!! ... :)

... I need to run, but just wanted to say a few quick points. 1) Sleep enough!!! When I was an undergrad I once tried to run an experiment with my roommates... it was not very well controlled, but basically we figured out that we got the same amount of work done during a day of studying hard, regardless of whether we had slept 5-6 or 8 hours the night before, but if we'd slept 5-6 we were cranky and not very happy, and if we slept 8 or more we felt good about ourselves and life... If you do have an academic emergency (paper due the next morning, not started yet)... yes, you will have to miss out on sleep... but realize that then you are just borrowing from the next day. Try to avoid making it a regular habit... 2) Take regular breaks where you do nothing. Go for a walk... sit under a tree... do whatever you need to get your mind wandering freely for an hour or two at least per week. During those times issues that you have not made peace will bubble up... you might feel homesick... you might feel sad about something... don't suppress those things... let them flow out... you will feel better afterwards. 3) Learn what study habits work best for you, and stick to them. Study hard, but do it at the times, places, and lengths of time that work best for you. Some of my friends prefer studying 5 hours nonstop and then taking a looong break. I can't concentrate for more than an hour... so I am best off actually going outside every hour rather than staying on predending to study when my mind is not on it... 4) The road ahead is bumpy. There will be classes where you will do less well than you'd like. That's life. Don't let that discourage you... hope that helps a bit... Arnico.

Jay, School is very important, this should be the main motivation to get you going when school starts for you. I know you wouldn't want to worry about it as soon as the semester starts coz there are too many distractions around - girls, food, parties and such. However, you can always circumvent all those distractions if you prioritize; yep, Time Management, thats the bird that I am taking about. In my undergraduate years, I always kept telling myself in the beginning of every semester ( and I still do) that I will ace all the courses, but the end-result was never satisfying. In retrospect, I realized that procrastination was tearing apart all my goals. Easier said than done, the solution for this would be to attend seminar about Time Management, and know how to use all the tactics that the organizers give you in the seminar. Attending a "time management" seminar should not be time-comsuming; it should not take much than an hour, and I am sure your school will organize such seminars free-of cost to students in the early weeks of the semester. Personally, after I started attending those seminars, I refocused myself in the coming semesters, and I think I ended up doing well academically though my social life was still intact. They taught me how to balance school-time and "me-time". Having said that there are times when you would find nothing to do. These times are crucial to make lives little exciting. Whenever I find such situations, I would always go running, and you would not believe what you have missed had you had not ran before. I noticed our school was beautiful and I felt close to the nature when I ran outside, and when I came back, I was pumped up, and that get me going for some hours. I don't know how big of a fan you are of running, but it will help, trust me. Once you start, it will be like an addiction, and it will ease all your tensions because at that time, you will only think about running, nothing else, and when you come back to the dorms, your mind would be so clear that you don't need other things to motivate you. Hope this helps, I need to get going too. school is starting for me from tomorrow as well, HA! wish me luck. laters yatri

Sitara.. nice one. If I follow these eight rules, i'd surely do good. But the worst thing is that I lack most of them. first>>i have good sense of humor but its hidden somewhere inside. Right words come to my mind in the right time, but too shy to bring it out. I take things personally even though i don't really want to. cant control myself. In the worst situation, things go haywire. Do you know anything on how to develope the sense of humor???

Oys! The most important thing for success in US Education? Network Yes, make as many acquaintance (if not friends) as you can. Then share the course notes and most importantly past exams. Studying well is not enough, the course materials are normally vast and you can't cover all. Follow the class notes and practice the past exams offered by the professor. If the professor is new, then go talk to him..asking what kind of questions to expect in the quiz. DWI

Soulfree; you seem so nice.... :) Here is something... if you can laugh at somebody, be able to laugh at yourself too....It is not too hard! when you get the urge to yell...take a deep breath and lower your voice. The delivery in a lower voice is more effective! (Trust me I know...I work with some inner city kids... :) If you feel the other person is unreasonable...walk away and find a different person to work with...Or change your strategy. Remember... if you yell, rave and rant...It is the other person is in control of your emotions and not you.He/she is pressing your buttons. (pulling your strings???) Don't give him/or her the satisfaction! :) Let it go!!!!! It works!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
