Probably cuz of stereotypical image that some ppl have of us being cunning and not trustworthy. The long nose thing also might be the reason ppl hate us. Well we cant change our DNA to stop looking like that now can we?

are castes applied at birth in nepal? if so, how are they applied, how long do they take to harden, and when are they removed? do people get to choose their own castes, or is it "one size fits all"? most importantly, why are castes being applied when nothing's broken in the first place?

Six to Eight Weeks gets the Cast Iron-y Prize of the Day! Another funny things about castes. If you've got a caste on your arm, you have to steer the bicycle one-handed. Not so good for steering a straight, competent course. Plus, if you fall in the river, the darned thing will weigh you down and you'll probably drown. My solution: How about if everyone just takes the last name Nepali :-)

Putalikanchi, I don't believe one bit that you look middle eastern or spanish. More than likely, you're a chinky eyed, short Nepali baun bajai. Bauns usually look that way. Mixed, that is. Pure ones like me look Indian. Look at yourself in the mirror. You probably have almond-shaped eyes.

but just think of all the sympathy one can milk just by stating that the caste is from one of the poorest countries of the world! and what kind of rating system is there for nepali castes? i can't ever recall seeing a guy in nepal walking around with one with "castrated on:[date]" written on it. and how long before nepali castes start itching?

Another advantage of everyone taking 'nepali' as a last name - women wouldn't have to worry about changing their last names after being married. On the other hand, incest might be an issue if everyone has the same last name.

I am a Newar , but i got a real long nose; and that is why i got the name of bahun bajey when i was a little kid. I am the only one in the family with a long nose. Sometimes I wonder if I am not from this family itself. Maybe in the hospital i was born I got swapped for some child born from the lady whom I call mother. But I care about it the least. Newar bhaye pani tara Bahun jasto dekhey pani , mero mann ta nepali nai ho. hey has anyone come up to you guys and told you you look half chinese and half indian cuz nepal is in between india and china.. "- that is what one of the gals in my school told me. Yesterday I was eating pizza in a local italian restaurant. and this guy comes up to me and says. Como estas amigo? and i said I am good. and he goes like De donde eres? and i said I am from Nepal . he goesl ike NEpal??? and i said it's in Asia( like the way hispanics pronounce it) and he goes like oh oh Asia. but you are mixed right. .. and i am like sorry. he says. you are mixed right. you look half dominican and half chinese. I am like what the- I have one hell of a time telling ppl i am a pure Nepali breed of humans.

fRank, you said you look bahun, no? I don't think majority of bahuns look half-Indian/half-chinese. Sure, there are some that look so, but they are not the majority, not even 1%. My dad looks pretty much middle-eastern. I do too. People have come up to me and told me that I don't look Nepali. One Pakistani gal nearly fainted when I told her I'm Nepali. I asked her to define what a stereotypical Nepali looks like. She goes, "Nepalis mostly look Malaysian" or "Nepalis look mixed since it's between India and China". I said, "yeah, we look mixed. But my family looks different for some reason", not wanting to converse anymore. Anyway, that's due to ignorance. They don't know anything about Nepal's demographics. Was the girl who called you "mixed" an Indian?? South Asians are very ignorant people, I tell you. Even a Bengali had the nerve of telling me that Nepalis usually have small eyes, and that I don't look Nepali when the fact is they look more mixed than majority of Nepalis. Newars can look both Indian or Tibetan. But they mostly look mixed. In other words, a typical Kathmanduite is a stereotypical Nepali. Now, chettris with last names like KC are also mixed. They are descendents of bahun-matwali intermarriage. Somehow, matwali blood has also been absorbed by bahun populations. I have met many bahuns with small eyes and blunt, round nose. It is pretty obvious why. We're between India and China. We got both types of people.

If Nepalis are mixed between Indians and Chineese then Americans { mixed between mexicans and canadians} Indians { mixed between Africans and Nepalis} Bangladeshis { mixed between Indians and Manmyaries (former Burmeese} British { mixed between French and Galapagos island residents}

About being a mix... Whenever people ask me why I don't look like other Nepalese they have seen before, more like chinese, this is what I tell them. Correct me if I am wrong: There are basically, two origins of Nepali People: Mongolian and Aryans. * Bahun, chhetri etc are more Aryans * Gurung, Magars are Mongolian types (Doesn't necessarily mean their ancestors came from Mongolia) . It's obvious to have 'mixing' of these two types and thus a little similarity. Which group do you think our Newari brothers fall into? Aryans or Mongolians?

DWI, do you really use the word "Aryan"??? Coz here in the US, and also Europe, Aryan has negative connotation. It really makes me laugh when I go to Nepali sites, and they classify Nepalis as "Aryans" or "mongolians". Hah. Who came up with this classification? Mongolian means a person from Mongolia. Correct word would be mongoloid, but that's an anthropological term. I would go with Indian and Tibeto-Burmese. Of course, there has been some inter-mixing. Manisha Koirala supposedly looks oriental, according to my Indian friends, although her nose appears to be pretty sharp. Her eyes look oriental. Many Madhesis also look oriental. About Newars, I guess it'll just depend on the person we're talking about. I met a really pretty Newar chic a week ago. She looks no different from bahun-chettri. Then again, I have also met Newars who look oriental. So it just depends, I guess...

Chettris, I think, have the most variety of features and looks because any child of a Chettri and a person of any other ethnic group is a Chettri plus a child between a Bahun and any other ethnic gropu is considered a Chettri. So, I don't think all Bahuns looked of a mixed race. As soon as there is inter-caste marriage or liasion, the child born of this union is no longer a Bahun. Most bahuns have sharp features and elongated face. Newars are overwhelming of the mongoloid stock but there's some indo-aryan mixture in some of them. People from the fareast and southeast asia are considered Orientals but not too long ago, anybody from east( orient) of Europe was considered an Oriental. Aryan as a concept of white supremacy and swastika as one of its symbols have had bad connotations attached to them due to the Nazis but they are benign in themselves. These words are directly derived from Sanskrit.

J. Doe dude, yes..I actually said Aryans..and I felt same after saying it. I felt like they might think we are from that Nazi-Aryan place. Thanks DIRK for clearifying things. Aryan actually comes from Sanskrit, as in Arya Putra in Mahabharata. So I guess it still is okay to classify us as Aryans and Mongolians..ooops..Mongoloids(thanks Doe) or even better: Oriental. I think Newars are primarily oriental because their language structure is as swift and fast as Oriental's. But again so was Sanskrit...so I guess the debate goes on. I guess its upto our fellow Newar brothers.

Frank, Too bad you are Newar and have a long Nose . What can you do with it . Nothing but to use it to support your sun glasses. You wish something else was longer than your nose. Atleast you could have gotten a good use out of it. I feel for you man. I used to have a roommate, from Nepal,A Bahun, Pure BAHUN, Who had a short nose but long something else .He worked in a restaurant. Man! once he slept with one of the waitresses who also worked in the same restaurant. After that the word spread around like a wild fire. Since then always had someone different every other night to sleep with. Sometimes one of his coworkers, sometimes a customer, sometimes even the lady managers. Way to go for him. Bottom line " Nak Me Kya Rakha Hai, Sirf SINGAN. CHahe Chota ho na Mota ho"

J Doe, The madhesis that belong to Tharu, Rajbhansi, Satar...etc., ethnic groups are also of the mongoloid stock although their language closer to Maithali or Bhojpuri or Hindi. FYI, Tibeto-Burmese is a language classification not an ethnic classification. i.e., Tamang are mongoloids and their language is of the tibetoburmese group.

Relatively speaking, you are right, Bahuns are not as mixed as Newars or Chettris. But there are anomalies. Long-headedness isn't the only trait that you look for in order to classify someone. You also look at his nose, his eyes, etc, etc. I have seen way too many bahuns who have mongoloid features like epicanthic fold, small eyes, etc. According to Nepalresearch.com, "Bista proves that the current Chetris are the descendants of special groups of Khas and Magars; only a few centuries ago these groups were transformed to Hinduized Chetris or even Bahuns by Indian Brahmans who fled to the Himalayan region."

haha lol. .jhoore dude. well the matter of the fact is i do wear glasses, so basically my long nose is of some use. however doesn't mean i got a small you-know-what. my you-know-what is really long and big. and all the others.- well don't even tell these americans that you are mongolians. the first thing they wil tell you is. .Aren't mongolians those huge ppl from mongolia and aren't they supposed to be the dumbest ppl on earth.. I guess tibeto-burmese is better compared to mongolians. but then, ppl still tell you so does that mean you are half tibetan and half burmese..

to the person who calls himself true nepali. c'mon dude. stop cursing those friggin bahuns. you ain't getting anything. I understand that b4 they came. we ruled Kathmandu valley. And if this helps, I am the descendent of the malla kings of kathmandu valley. I have cursed the bahuns long enough to realize it doesn't help. they are nepalese after all. they are cunning and all, but they are still nepalese.. and don't forget the bahuns did a good job during the regime of Prithvi Narayan Shah.. IT is only after his death that things have gone terribly bad. Now let's not curse each other and live in peace. Like PN Shah said " nepal char jaat, chattish barna ko sajha foolbari ho! " Peace

what's up with the "oriental" classification -- feels like we are talking about furniture! (as in oriental rugs). and, all the talk of classifying ppl according to their facial features sounds dangerously like colonial anthropologists/"exploreres" who classified ppl on the basis of physical features (mostly).
