First reason I like Shailaja is her policy on Small HydroElectric Power Generation in Nepal. She should be praised and appreciated for that reason. Deoba, whose father in law is said to be agent of Enron (before enron was bank rupted), wanted to generate Electricity in Karnali river, and let his father in law earn 3% as local agentship, i.e. few billion rupees. -- I still believe on Shailaja that she is honest and pure from all respects including monetary issues. What she spoke is great against that old outdated corrupt man "Girija"--HG Girija faction will take part in elections: Shailaja KOL Report KATHMANDU, Aug 27 – Shailaja Acharya, One of the prominent leaders of the Nepali Congress factions led by Girija Prasad Koirala, has said her faction will take part in the November 13 general elections despite suggestion to the contrary by the party leader Koirala on Sunday. Speaking to reporters in Biratnagar on Tuesday, Ms. Acharya said, "election is the yardstick to measure the strength of democratic parties and the Nepal Congress will not boycott any election and neither should it boycott the forthcoming election." She further added, " I don't know under what circumstances Koirala said he would not take part in elections. But I want to assure you that Nepali Congress, with or with the party flag or symbol, would participate in the electoral process." Acharya said the whole political process would return back to 2046 B.S. era if her party were to boycott the election. (rk)

She is probably the most prominent woman politician in the country who has done nothing for women's rights. Has not worked against the long list of sexist laws.

HahooGuruji, Short comment on small hydro power. It should be encouraged only if there is no other possibility at all, both due to econoomical and technical reasons. Economically small hydropower costs several times than larger plants per KWH. Technically, power quqlity is very poor if it is not connected to large power grid. And maintenance is also difficult. On the other hand, our scatterd small loads (becasue of few industries) raise the transmission cost and maintaining quality (usually voltage) is difficult. Garib desh lai je gare pani nahune. Of course, something is better than nothing. .....

Small hydropower plants don't need world wide cult leader i.e. World Bank, so that your project disappears after you spend millions of dollars. e.g. Melamchi Water Supply Project. Arun Project ... why waste time and money. World Bank is the main culprit behind all price hikes. Small hydropower is going to bring unused money from private investors to this profitable area. Small hydropower, the new law, has allowed peoples to have own small biz. It will allow peoples in remote areas to have electricity, compared to the world bank funded drama of having electricty. Forget world bank, forget for some generations the big electricity projects. Big electricity (HP) will have boom again when Another chernovil blast will occure and peoples in developed country will realize the importance of HP. Its not very far. I can smell it from recent accidents in Japanese NP palnt disasters. Its consequences. Till now govts. are telling that no problem with NP Plants, but, statistically, its wrong and human error is disasterous, e.g. Tokai Mura accident, and I used to live only 60km away from the processing plant. World Bank is gang leader, that will not let us have Nepali Peoples govt., but, its virtually, a world banks ' local proxy govt. Paschim, sorry to disappoint your "former " employer. Nepal le WB = World Bug lai loppa khuwaune ho bhane we should follow what shailaja has said. Utilize own resource, before you beg with world wide cult bank. HG

My lasting impression about Shailaja Acharya: She is pretty good tabloid material. The Fourth Estate needs these Shailaja Acharyas in order to pander sensational stuff to the hoi-polloi, you see. :)
