Blast at Bishal Bazar KOL Report KATHMANDU, Aug 28 – A bomb has exploded in the busy shopping district of Kathmandu city late Wednesday morning causing slight structural damage to building and sending panic through shoppers and shopkeepers. The bomb went off at around 10.45 a.m. inside Bishal Bazar shopping complex situated at the capital’s busy commercial district, New Road. According to our photographer, Bikas Rauniar who visited the scene soon after the blast, the bomb appeared to be explosives packed inside a pressure cooker and was left on the passage of the third floor of the shopping complex. “The explosive device appears to be quite primitive,” Rauniar said. The blast caused minor structural damage to about 20 shops on the floor and shattered windowpanes, scatters passersby with glass down below. The explosion however, did not cause any casualties. Heavily armed army and police have sealed off the area and are preventing people from entering the area. There are no claims of responsibility as yet but the blast bears the hallmark of Maoist terrorists who have been waging a bloody campaign to overthrow the government and establish a republican state. The blast also appears to be signs that the Maoists may be stepped up their violence after months of relative lull. (rk)
