Last night, I was online at 10. I was checking this site out .. and all of a sudden I get this security alert that says " Your computer is showing some IP address, Someone might be attacking you computer" IT scared the shit out of me. If I was in nepal it would have been no big deal, but I am in America. Getting you computer hacked is no small shit out here. SO i was scared that i shut down my computer. Later I took the risk of login in and updated my antivirus software , but it didn't detect any virus in my PC. Now I am no genius in the field of computers, however I know in order for someone to be inside my computer and to take over the root , that person has to implant a virus in my computer.. and as far as i can remember i haven't downloaded anything that might contain any viruses except for the picture that i posted in my other thread. ANd i haven't visited any unsecure sites.. I don't know how safe sajha.com is. ? To the SIte Admin- Can someone get hold of my IP address from this site.? If that is the case noones safe. NOw if this shyalu or whoever person it is. IF that picture did contain any virus.. I swear that i will get back to you. To all the computer geniuses and engineers who login to sajha.com. DO you have any idea what happened to my computer? Do you think that somebody was in my computer when i got that security alert. Help me out. Peace

I bet that it has to be one of the ppl from sajha.com . I have heard that too many times that they track of your IP address, it has not happened to me yet. I request to the admin that what is the reason behind tracking the IPs.

It seems like you guys might need a lesson in IP-101 IP means internet protocol. IP is required to use the internet. When you visit any website, the website knows your IP since that's how the internet works. All websites track your IP since in order to run statistical reports they need to turn webserver logs on. Now, if this fact bothers you, you might as well un install your browser and never visit another site again.

The best way to protect your computer is to install a personal firewall. They have different firewalls for personal computers and are quite cheap(may be even free). It's possible to hack your computer without installing a complicated virus. A simple Ftp pinging programs could also have alerted your IP security. Anything could've happened, just go with the suggestion and install simple firewall. U don't have Morphues or similar music downloading program do u?

hey IT guy, I do know waht IP means. alright. i do have knowledge on general terms of computers. but there are stuffs which i don't know.. i know if we wanna be safe then the best thing we can do is never be online.. but u know that is not possible.. I just want to make sure that Sajha.com. is safe enough, cuz i don't want my identity stolen and nor do i want the information on my computer stolen. And for the past two weeks, weird things have been going on in my computer, My history folder is always empty, All the temporary internet files instead of being in the TEmp. INt. files folders are always outside in c:\windows. and the most weirdest of all is. that the file c:\windows\cookies\index.dat which cannot be deleted can be deleted in my computer anytime i want. I so dont like it. Similarly, my computer has become really slow while 90% of the system resource is free. Moreover my internet connection has been slow for a week now. it takes me like 2 and half minutes just to load any usual website. I so don't like this. Peace

I installed Real Jukebox two weeks ago .but it is safe cuz i installed it from a Cd. andmy cousin who used the same Cd doesn't have any problems.

More things, including above posted by others, you can do is keep your machine updated with all the recent updates available from the Microsoft site ( depending upon your operating system). These also include security updates that include IE security patches. Another thing , if you have NAV , short for Norton Anti Virus, installed on your machine, check the one that says ' Enable file system real time protection".What this does is it will notify immediatley if you have any virus that just got to your machine. I love the Firewall idea because that is what I have also. If you connect to the internet through DSL or Cable line, it is a must. If you just dial in than ' Internet security' from Symantec is another good option. Either way you have to protect your machine.Do nto use some crap like ' Black ice' . That is just an annoyance. Also vistit Microsoft.com as frequently as you visit SAJHA. I hope this helps.

thanx dhumbasse I use Trend Pc-cillin. I don'tknow how good it is. But i had NAV before and it wasn't any good. I just use my computer to log in to sajha. hotmail. nepalnews. msn messenger and probably a few other sites. do you think i should buy one of those firewalls or one of those free firewalls should suffice. I found a list of free firewalls in the net. DO you think any of these should be of help. 1) Kerio Personal Firewall (KPF). 2)ZoneAlarm (new ver 3.0) . 3) Outpost Firewall from Agnitum (new). 4)Tiny Personal Firewall . DO you think any of these are good enough. If so which one would be the best. peace

ZOne alarm is good enough in your case. But remember , when you implement this and try to access some LAN ,there might be some issues before you can successfully logon due to the security applied by the LANs. In that case you gonna have to disable the ZOnealarm thing. I do not know if you need to access such a network, which most people do when they are working from home. The anti- virus software you have is good enough, I am used to with NAV so I like it and do not trust the other ones. I used to use Maccafee before. Different people, different choices. if I were you I would go, spend about 40 dollars and get NAV 2002 version. Again it is your choice.

Seems like u got virus on ur PC, coz that really slows ur PC n screws ur files. You might have to scan ur PC, download patches/upgrades frm microsoft site. If it doesn't work, then format ur hard drive. good luck

Santosh, Formatting hard drive, partitioning, and reinstalling the operationg system would be quite burdensome for someone who knows less about the viruses . Let us not go that far unless the situation demands, as frank said he ran his anti virus software and nothing was found. I think the best bet at this time juncture for frank would be what we have discussed above. PEACE ................................

Frank. I am telling you a story of my friend who lives in phoenix. He has a nice machine, Hp built, new one. Not too long ago, he got a virus through email. So his machine started being slow, and gave all kinda error messages. Then he got another email which was sent from his machine to me , which got bounced back to him. He did not send that email to me as he recalled. The email read said ' Unable to deliver .............and an .exe file'. Not knowing what was going on he had called me. I told him if he had that bounced email . he said yes and he read it over the phone. It sounded like one of the virus files( do not remember the exact name at this time) and I did a search on the Symantec.com site and found the matching name which was a virus that went into his pc, and started sending emails to all people that were listed on his address book. On the same site I found the removal tool of that particualr virus and told him to goto Symantec.com and to download the removal tool. he did and ran the tool and his pc came back to normalcy. One thing to note, he had anti virus software called PC-cillin, updated one, and when he scanned his hard drives for viruses it reported ' No virus found' But there was virus, indeed. This is why I do not trust the pc cillin things. I hope this clears my point of needing a good anti virus software.

DHumbasse I basically understand how viruses work. And as far as I can recall I havne't opened or downloaded any .Exe files. ANd i don't think any members of my family has done it either. The only thing i suspect is the picture that i copied from this site. Do you think it is a trojan horse. I hate trojans. I had trouble with them when I was in Nepal too. well thanx about the Pc-cillin .. it helps.. yea i think i should get another anti-virus software. I have used NAV before I don't like it much. I have used Mcafee too it's ok but it is slow. Well i have decided to download a firewall. but since the virus is already in my computer do you think installing a firewall be of any help Peace

hmm interesting.. u said u got an alert that said "Your computer is showing some IP address, Someone might be attacking you computer". what program gave u that warning cause as far as i know, windows itself doesn't do that. and as far as protecting ur comp goes, i suggest u download or buy zone alarm pro. its the one i use. i think its the best firewall for home users. well some ppl might disagree cause they have their own choices but i find zone alarm really good. and also get norton antivirus. its the best virus scanner. but u said ur comp is really screwed up and stuff. so i strongly suggest u format and reinstall windows. then install firewall and anti virus software. that way, u can be sure that ur computer isn't already compromised. oh by the way, MAKE SURE that u have the latest version of Internet Explorer with LATEST security patches. goto microsoft's site and download the latest patch for Internet Explorer. cause it contains some serious bugs and it can even let someone do stuff with ur computer that u dont want them to do. la ta good luck

fRank, Most probably you have nothing to be afraid of at this moment as other people said. But installing a firewall is not a bad idea, as long as it doesn't become a cause for crashing your computer. I don't think it should have any problem with your computer, you almost certainly are not in LAN. As Dhumbasse endorsed it, I too would recommend Zone Alarm. As far as your slow and crashing computer is concerned, there are few things we can check it up for. Let me know you are concerned about its slowness and if it crashes frequently, I will then post some remedies up.

Clean out your temp folders to delete cookies so that it improves your down load time. I think you are getting too paranoid. America has nothing to do with computer crashing or being hacked. What I suggest you do is bring a guy that is savvy enough to figure out what's going on. Unless you have some priceless data no-one is going to hack your computer. However, do not open any attachments. That's the only thing you could do to!! good luck!

Hi fRank, Viruses require executable files to embed itself. Even though a recent case of JPEG virus was reported, viruses till now are not capable of transfering themselves though picture files. Viruses are written to avoid anti-virus software. Anti-viruses generally recognize virues though their signatures. So generally anti-viruses cannot catch new virues and even some of the mutated old ones. Updating an anti-virus software is only part of the solution. Also virus can hide in the boot area which are not checked by the anti-virus. It is only when those virus attempt to run do the anti-virus have a fairly good chance of catching them. Installing fire-wall is one of the solutions. However there is really no protection against a new good virus or a worm. Also you said you 'think' that your family didn't download anything suspicious. Now we all know how BIG the difference between 'thinking' and being the fact is specially when it comes to the cause of computer problems.

Biruwa. well incase youdin't know there are viruses that can get into your computer thru pictures i.e wallpapers.. which is usually in bmp format. well i am pretty sure my family members didn't download anything. I am home again. and I have downloaded a firewall and it's working ok. But the thing that amazes me is how in the hell did my computer connection become so fast. for a week now or even more .. my internet connection was slower than a snail. it usually took me like 3 or 4 min to open sajha.com. and now after talking to you guys my connection suddenly goes whooosh.. and I am able to open sajha.com in less than 20 seconds... now i just don't get it. don't tell me it could have been co-incidence. .NO i dont' think so. I just don't like the way things are going around. God bless me. Peace

Katai tyo keti ramro, battis laccyanle yukta bhayeki, Battisputalima nai ghar pani bhayeki hola, ani tyesko sarap lageko jasto cha. Just kidding. I like to know exactly what message did you see on your screen when you were alerted by the problem. That problem just cannot be a virus but maybe something more. Like Biruwa said, the virus is an .exe file that sits on your hard rive, MBR and does all the trick. May be this time it was a virus; and actually was assisting someone to run applications or programs, which took your CPU time and made your computer slow as you and the other person who had the virus inflicted on your machine were tying up the pc resources. Perhaps, since you have the firewall running, the other user is not being able to get to your machine and , thus , it is fast. Just speculating the problem. hami sabai dekhi tyo Virus darayeko pani hunasakcha...lol By the way what do you use to get to internet . Broadband or Dial-up?

May b the guy got scared cuz i asked you guys for help.. lol. . aneeways thanx for helping me out. cuz last night it scared the shit out of me. WHen i hit some button at the end of that security alert I got directed to an anonymous site and that is when I shut down the computer. I checked it out today cuz i remembered that i had been directed to a website. I checked it out and instead of a webaddress or IP address , it was blank. and i mean blank.. I had been directed to not only one website but two of them. well i guess i will never be able to figure it out. I really don't remember the entire message but as far as i can recall it said " YOur computer is showing some IP address , someone might be attacking (or some other word) your computer.." As soon as i got it went ballistic.. and I use dial up. To well wisher- it's not who is America's NO. 1.. it is what is AMerica's No. 1. .go to google.com. or yahoo.com. and search for it. .

Strange coincidence. I was waching TechTV today and one caller asked about possible hacking on his computer. The experts in the show advised him to first get an Anti Virus and then get FireWall protection. Strangely enough, they also recommended Zone Alarm. Coincidence? I think so. Goto techtv.com, them still might have that info there. America's no 1 isp? AOL still. Oh how I hated it.

Is it possible for a hacker to get into my computer even if I have a firewall and change the contents or any other parts of the firewall or even delete a few files.. Cuz i turned my computer on and I found out that 2 of the files of my firewall were missing. SO I just downloaded another firewall.
