Lotha Salla plantation catches on

CHARIKOT: The medicinal plant Lotha Salla (a kind of pine) used for preparing cancer treatment drugs has started to be cultivated in Dolakha district.

Farmers of the district who used the Lotha Salla as fodder for domestic animals have now been attracted towards its cultivation on a commercial basis.

Dabur Nepal, which produces and processes products based on herbs, established a nursery at Gairi area of Jiri VDC. As a result, local farmers have changed their attitude to this medicinal plant.

Several community forest users' groups and farmers are now taking up Lotha Salla cultivation farming in the district with vigour in collaboration with Dabur Nepal.
"As the yields are found to be excellent within the community forest areas, we are planning to expand cultivation in the protected forest areas", Ang Mingma Sherpa, chariman of a local community forest user group said.
Up to 50,000 kg of Lotha salla is collected in Dolakha district in a year.
