China Appears to Block Web Search Engine Google Mon Sep 2, 7:30 AM ET By John Ruwitch BEIJING (Reuters) - China appears to have blocked leading search engine Google ( news - external web site), sparking speculation of a crackdown on Internet content viewed as subversive ahead of a Communist Party congress in November. The U.S.-based Web site, which has become popular among Internet surfers in China because of its simplicity and ability to run thorough Chinese-language Web searches, was inaccessible via Chinese servers as early as Saturday, users said. "It's being blocked out of Beijing," said one industry insider, who follows China's regulation of the Internet closely and used his computer to confirm and pinpoint the block. The government openly attempts to control Web content in China, where the Internet threatens Communist Party control over the media. It blocks several foreign news sites and frequently forces domestic sites to expunge content deemed unwholesome. An article posted on Web portal NetEase.com said Google was being blocked because searches could bring up links to pornography, content associated with the banned spiritual movement Falun Gong ( news - web sites) and information deemed harmful to national security. China's media censors tend to be particularly edgy during politically sensitive times, analysts said, and a Google block may be an attempt to sweep up ahead of the Party congress, which is expected to see sweeping leadership changes. It was the first time the government had blocked access to an Internet search engine, analysts said. "It's pretty surprising," said Nathan Midler, a senior analyst at International Data Corp in Beijing. "Google, as a search engine, doesn't necessarily conjure up the idea of a Web site worth blocking." There was no official announcement and officials at the Ministry of Information Industry were unavailable for comment. Google officials in California could not be reached. In May, China lifted blocks on the overseas Web sites of several Western news agencies, including Reuters, but other news sites and politically sensitive Web sites are still unavailable. This is pretty interesting. Does Nepali government try to regulate access to information through the net? Does anyone know which sites are most popular for nepalis livng in Nepal? How is the internet used? How many people have access to computers and the nternet anyway? |

CLosing Google is like turning Kathmandu's street out of street lamp. Well, there is Moon Light which is little difficult but, not very bad. Google is just torch light or street lamp, but, not a gate. Those who already know how to walk and where to go, can spend more time, surely reach destination. When I was in NY, I reached to my friends apartment with only avenue and street number and house number. Just spend several tries and found the house, the house numbering was so systematic, you don'T need any support, in broad day light. The officers don't know What for Google? Its just a pointer. |

Does anyone else feel China ought to be a regular multi-party democracy, that democracy is not a "western" concept. |

frank: It is rather presumptious of you to say what you did. I could very well have the same questions about Nepal even if I lived there. Does everyone in Nepal know what how the Nepali government regulates access to the internet? Do YOU know how many people have access to the internet and computers in Nepal? If so, share the information. Otherwise I don't see the point of you rather pointless assertion! Yes, I do need a visit to Nepal and I am going home soon. But that is not your concern! Whether I know a lot about Nepal or don't well that is not for you to judge. Neither is it your place to say whether I will live there or not. Keep you half baked iseas about other people to yourself, frank! |

Ok, here is another response, frank. Much more reflective of my current mood! 1) Asking questions is a good thing! Maybe you still being deprogrammed from all the rote education in Nepal, huh? 2) Assume = making as Ass of U and ME! Get it! ;) |

I agree with paramendra and Guruji. Chinese government is strange -- they block google.com because they think "it's a threat to communism" -- they killed sparrows (during Mao Zedong's time) thinking that they ate all their crops! Kura Ga-re-ra sad-ya nai chai-na! ~DBB |

There is an interesting article by Senator John McCain of campaign finance reform fame in Time magazine: The Road To Baghdad -- (1) Do you think democracy is appropriate for all countries, and without delay? Or do you think it is a "western" idea not suited for maybe Singapore and China and some others? As if countries will take their time? (2) Which are the major non-democracies? What's their internal politics like? Any signs democracy might be coming? (3) A lot of countires became democratic in the 1990s. What will create another such wave, you think? (4) How long before China becomes a democracy? |
