Nepal's big news today is that the CIAA has FINALLY: a) arrested Hari Bhakta Shrestha, the former chair of the RNAC. b) arrested Tirtha Lal Shrestha, a member of the RNAC Board. c) asked for a bail of 5 karoad rupees (Rs. 50,000,000) each form both of those corrupt gentlemen. The CIAA has further: a) confiscated the passport of Tarini Dutta Chataut, the former Minister of Civil Avaiation and one of the die-hard bhaktas of Sri Tin Maharaj Girija. b) asked Chautat NOT to leave the valley without CIAA's permission. These developments are enormously interesting in that the noose around Sri Tin Maharaj Girija is tightening and tightening fast. Watch him squirm, struggle and try to get out of the mess. Hey, maybe there is hope for Nepal, after all, you know :-) Mr. Hari Bhakta Shrestha was a 'mamuli' government bureaucrat who, thanks to his bhakti of Sri Tin Maharaj Girija's daughter Sujata, had been catapulted to the post of the Board ko chairman of the RNAC. His monthly salary at RNAC should not have been more than Rs. 15,000. It'd be interesting to see how he comes up with 5 karoad to pay his bail. Mr. Tirtha Lal Shrestha is someone with close ties with ICTC, a Nepali construction company that had acted as Lauda Representative in Nepal. It's also be quite interesting to see how he comes up with 5 karoad to pay his bail too. (Gotta love these gentlemen's dilemma: If they each come up with 5 karoad, CIAA can ask them how they came up with that amount of money; if they don't, well, they stay in jail. Talk about the 'devil's alternative'.) But the larger point is this: Chataut thought that he would stick to Girija and remain an opponent to his rival in the Western Nepal -- Sher Bahadur Deuba. Now, with these developments. Chataut must be kicking himself and blaming the Koiralas for pushing him into the slime from which he has little hope of escaping. Girija, being Girija, will be too happy to make Chataut a sacrifical lamb. Poor Chataut!! Now, watch Girja and Sujata trying very very hard, and breaking every rule to try to save the two Shresthas and their beloved Lauda Agent ICTC. I think it's fair to say that: a) Since GP Koirala has been the PM of Nepal for the last 8 years (out of 10 years of democracry), it'd be better for the country if Sri Tin Maharaj Girija now simply resigned and left the country altogether. The alternative, of course, is being charge-sheeted by the CIAA and going to jail. b) It'd also be better, to borrow actress Melanie Griffith's line from the movie "Working Girl", if Nepal's First Daughter Sujata Koirala too "hauled her sorry ass" out of Nepal and went back to Germany where her husband lives. Only then, 22 million Nepalis can get back to enjoying the fruits of democracy in a relatively less corrupt Nepal. oohi "tired of all this goddamn corruption and the accompanying enervating political tamasha in Nepal" ashu

From what I read in TKP, Shrestha_dwaya were given about 2 hrs to produce 5 karod rupia each. The stakes have gone pretty high... What will happen to Chataut in the next few days? He MIGHT turn to CPN_UML and work to oust Koirala_GP. Or he could use the Maobadis. Also, there is no way to prevent him from leaving Ktm and head to Kashi (Charles Shobraj (sp)??). Daughter Koirala (Sujata), it was rumoured, has been separated from her Deutsch husband, during the RNAC_Frankfurt scandal era. Would be nice to see, assuming the separation was true, how she would adjust to the Biratnagar ways. Certain sources inside the Baluwatar kwartar tell that Koirala_GP household has been planning his exit (from PM_ship) for a while. One of the questions raised is the post_PM_ship security arrangement for Koirala. Wonder if anyone wants to "protect" him in these troubled times. Is anyone publishing Bhad_Bhailo in the valley? It made quite a read during the Jana_Aandolan. Pamfa devi (urf Sujata).. etc.. etc... etc... -dk
