I am currently working in the US under optional practical training. Was thinking of going to nepal for dashain. What is the ease/risk of getting a visa back under OPT? Should I go?If i go, what documents should i take to the embassy? or should i not take the risk? Any experienced/knowledgeable folks, please help. Thanks.

the OPT does not give any previlege to get visa to come back to US. While you are in OPT, you are just utilizing the 1 year term to legally work in US. However, it does not grant you an oppertunity to get back to US. Do not ask me why because that is what it is all about. Unless you get your H1 or get your student status by attending graduate school, you won't be eligible to come back in US.

Reena, Yes Jira is extremely right and they already mentioned in OPT card NOT VALID FOR REINTER TO US..........better to convert your F-1 to H 1 OR go back to school and get the I-20 from school and study one semester then you can go Nepal. That way you might get Visa from Nepal. Goodluck to you........ Thanks, Sagun

Hi Reena, The suggestion by Jira is quite relevant, but you can make a good trip to Kathmandu even you are in Optional Practical Training. Do not look at what will happen next, just do what you think the best. Look luck .

would you have gone if you were in her position? P.S. I think what Jira is 100% correct.

I would have gone if I was in Reena's position. I do what I think the best for me. But, remember, I never harm any one. What is my situation, it does not matter for anyone else. It's absolutely private matter. I know one of my friend went to Kathmandu, while she was in OPT. She had a Master's degree in Computer Science from University of Connecticute. It was last year, now she is in H1 and working in NY. Good luck.

Getting the I-20 seems a good idea prior to heading to Nepal. If not, the H1 Visa allows one to travel back and forth. If I recollect correctly, person on H1 can pre-apply for a re-entry visa and get it before even departing the US. That way, one can avoid the gauntlet of the US embassy in Nepal. A curioisty though: Ritu, I'd be interested in meeting up with that gal with the degree in CS workin in NY. I'd appreicate any leads. Thanks

I wouldn't suggest Reena to goto Nepal unless she has a valid I-20 for graduate level course or H1 or some other legal status. She won't be able to comeback to US in opt. training. If she is not concerned in returning to the US, Obviously, there is nothing to worry about.

My frien did not have trouble to come back to US and work with the status of H1. She went to Kathmandu, while her Dad was passes away. She was desperate to visit her Mom at that time. She did not do any legal process. At that time, a group of friends did suggest her not to go to Kathmandu staying at OPT. She went Kathmandu, even she had to live in Kathandu with her Mom. She has just a paper from her Work that guaranteed her come back to US. There was nothing wrong. Do what you think the best and there will be a solution in any appropriate way. Good luck

Thanks everyone for your inputs. I probably should postpone my trip plans to nepal for dashain. Ritu, thanks for your stand also, but its too much of a risk to go considering my commitment and responsibilities at work. Once again, thanks a lot. reena
