Now that new threads can be posted, here is a message that might be of interest to you. ********************************** Date: Sat, 07 Sep 2002 22:27:41 -0700 From: Ben Parks To: ptet@directcon.net Subject: WORLD WIDE ALERT : Nepali going to trial September 17 (h-m) Hello Sept. 8, 2002 @ 11:10 am in Kathmandu This is the first of several messages to be broadcast to everyone on my mail list. It concerns the upcoming , September 19, trial of Hari Bahadur Gurung and Pore Ghale. They are currently prisoners at Klong Prem Prison in Bangkok. They have been framed in a drug deal of 7.5 Kg of heroin. Without immediate legal support they will most surely get the death penalty. I will provide briefs on their cases in a few hours. All of you must contact the Ministry of Foreign affairs in Kathmandu and ALL Nepal embassy staff in Bangkok and the USA. Urge their immediate support and intervention. It is stupid and careless to have Nepali citizens get the death penalty when they are innocent. The case of Ang Kami Lama is also very close as this is the one year anniversary of his arrest. I will also provide a brief on his case in a few hours. Additional postings will be made to: PTET-Nepal Committee in KTM soc.culture.nepal GBNC global Nepali student networks. We lost the opportunity to provide support for Arun Kumar Tamang, on July 15 He went to his final appeal without any support or legal consul. His LIFE sentence was sustained. This is really a tragedy and disgrace. Thank you for your kind attention. Please stand-by for the details. Ben Parks, PTET-Nepal Committee, USA.

Too sad to hear it. Sorry for them. How could they fly to Bankok form Kathmandu with 7.0 kg illegal drugs? What was the story behind that? Why all the Magars and Ghale-s are in Bankok jail? Let's do some thing for them as long as we can. tears.......

Ghorey ji, Are you sure that these people did not carry drugs?? Heroine is a very very addictive drug and I have no sympathy for the carriers. What can we really do if a person is dumb enough to carry 7 kgs of heroine and go to Bangkok, right? Ritu Ji, your statement about Ghaleys and Magars definitely shows how racists you are.

A Ghale does not want to be called "Ghale" and he/she has proud to be a "Ghale". What is that? Isn't it a way to be racists themselve? It's for all the caste in Nepal. In kathmandu, Jhapu-s do not like to be called "Jhapu", what is that? However, they are proud to be Jhapu anyway.

Its not calling them Ghaley or Magar, Its the way you said it...."why all Ghaleys and Magars in Bangkok jail??" You are trying to stereotype them and by the way I am not a Ghaley or Magar.

i was simply passing along an email message that i received last night. i do not presume the accused nepalis' guilt or innocence in this case and have not done any research, as i indicated in my initial posting of this under the thread "breaking news". perhaps nepalis and others in this forum and elsewhere will take as much or more interest in this as subash gurung's case. hieraunla...

Damn. Isn't that too draconian? I am all for cutting off genitalia of a rapist, hands of a thief and head of a serial killer, but death penalty for selling drugs is too harsh a punishment. Industrialized nations should impose a sanction on Thailand. Now That should teach them a lesson or two.

Ghoray, you posted the message from Mr. Parks without including his e-mail address. Would you be able to forward his message to me by e-mail as well, or get him to contact me? No promises, but I may know some people in Bangkok who might be able to look into the case. Mr. Parks claims they were framed. I don't know whether they were framed, plain stupid, or willingly carried illegal substances. What I do know is that Thailand takes illegal drug possession VERY seriously, even giving border guards the right to shoot *suspected* drug traders. Thailand has seen enough of its youths fall victim to drugs that it has strong reason to make life uncomfortable for drug peddlers. I don't know how much we can be done for them at this point (they will at least get a long jail sentence), but we should make sure that (1) the Nepali embassy in Bangkok does not just sit there doing nothing when two of its citizens are in trouble (as Nepali embassies elsewhere have done in the past)... that it makes sure they get a decent lawyer and that embassy staff are present at the trial. Any Nepali students from AIT participating on sajha: now it is your turn to act and go lobbying or helping out at that green building on Sukhumvit Soi 71. and (2) whatever their final plight, that it gets spread by the Nepali news media to discourage others from following their path. Arnico.

Unfortunately, I cannot locate his email address. I hope some of these links might help. Perhaps enlisting the help of Nepali-Thai Buddhist exchange groups would help remind the Thai authorities of the Compassionate Buddha. At this late date, just about anything's worth a try.

Hello Ghoreyji, I am sorry to hear about our fellow Nepalese but I have to agree with the rest that I too have NO sympathy for people who do illegal things. And drugs..They should be hanged. I have to agree with Ritu here- why do these Bhotes, Gurungs & Magars put themselves in these kind of disgraceful lime light?? We had Subash Gurug here doing something similarly crazy and now these stupid guys in Bangkok. I am NOT racist but it's the mere fact. And we have to accept it!

the whole point is that these guys were probably FRAMED, but i guess the mere fact that they're nepali is sufficient to prove guilt by association, for you at least. if you're not going to help in this effort, then please stay out of it.

NepaliThitti: You might want to call yourself *"whatever-ethnic-group-you-belong-to"thiti* rather than Nepalithiti. Even so, you would be doing a grave injustice to all the others of your particular ethnic group because from what you have said thus far you surely don't represent your ethnic group in a positive light! "I have to agree with Ritu here- why do these Bhotes, Gurungs & Magars put themselves in these kind of disgraceful lime light?? We had Subash Gurug here doing something similarly crazy and now these stupid guys in Bangkok. " Did you even read the original thread and the update posted by nuchche? Saying "I am not being racist, but..." just does not cut it! I am saying this after reading your comments (why do these Bhotes, Gurungs & Magars put themselves in these kind of disgraceful lime light?? Was the word "bhote" even mentioned in any of the posts so far? huh?) Yeah, Ritu said some crap about how "jhapu" (what the hell is that? must have meant "Jyapu"!) and Ghales not wanting to be called that. From what I know Ghales are proud to call themselves Ghales as a general rule. As for Jyapu and terms like "bhote" they have been used by the "mainstream" Nepalis like YOU just like the "N" word has used in the past in this country... as a derogatory, demeaning, belittling term for a people. You have obviously bought into the straighnosed, big eyed, pure bred, pure heart Aryan lie. Nonsense! There are plenty of corrupt Nepalis who DONT happen to be of the "minortiy tibeto- burman" ancestory. And THAT is a fact. Another FACT is that there are many Nepalis of the "minortiy tibeto- burman" ancestory who have brought fame, fortune and glory to Nepal! Nonsense!

Let me just add one thing about the Aryan lie. Just having big eyes don't make you an Aryan. Nepalis mostly have epicanthic folds, whatever their origin is, be they bahun, chettri, magar, gurung or tamang (the exception being the Teraibasis, who are of different origin). Typical example, Samrat Upadhyay. You guys might call him Aryan. But I certainly see eyes with epicanthic folds. Our very own Manisha Koirala who we think of as having big eyes actually has almond-shaped eyes. Indians think she has mixed features, and certainly, they are right about that. There is no pure race in Nepal. We are all mixed. And I don't mind that by the way. I am a realist, unlike others here who only care about purity and racial superiority. Link to Samrat's pic. Had a hard time finding his pic. http://www.wavemag.com.np/2002/march/pics/samrat.jpg

its not about their belonging to some ethnic group, its not about what they look like, its not even bout they r nepalese or not, its about the drug trafficking, and getting a fair trail regardless wherever they r from. if they are not guilty they should be freed, if they are guilty then there is no excuse for that kinda behaviour considering quantity of drug was about 7 kgs. imagine how many lives w'd've been ruined!!!

For what? anepalikt : I understand your reaction becoz you might be from one of these mention ethic group. I think you need to know the meaning of racisim first and understand it clearly. Everybody has the right to freedom of speach and I said nohing wrong but based on facts. Why do you have problem acknowleding the truth? Suna: You seem to be from of these groups too. Consider yourself an exception and keep shut. It's the fact....Subash Gurung.... and now we have another Gurung!! So what does that say??? I should consider myself an exception? THEN WHY THE HECK DID YOU GENERALIZE IN THE FIRST PLACE?? Subash Gurung is mentally disturbed REY The other Gurung could have been plain dumb. Had he been as smart as the RIMAL fellow in NYC who absconded to Nepal leaving a trail of OTHER NEPALESE in DEBT, he wouldn't have been caught! Now I wonder what the implications of this ONE RIMAL guy means for the REST OF THE BAHUN/CHETTRI Nepalese?? NOTHING! NOTHING AT ALL. Just means one bad apple. Yo, why're we fighting about race? Nepalis, no matter what their background, are basically mongrels. It's a fact. We have been mixing with each other for a looong time now. So, if you diss, say, a Magar, you might be dissing one of your own ancestors. Yes, even bahuns have magar, gurung, ancestry. Now, don't diss your own people. We're all bastardised. Sad, you might think, but true.

Nepalithitti , Check your spelling from the top to the bottom . Now if you do get to see this posting of mine, do think of the other one ( Cool , ......) you thought had just ended. Ke garnu yestai le ho malai naramro bolne banayeko. DEEPle bhanya jasto kulla ta kati gare gare, pheri yestai alchina haru le garda manpari chadna man lagcha, paye samma kapal pani bhutlyayera lachar pachar parna man lagcha. Euta thita's Idea 'We need to hang you by your titties' was not bad after all. But, the bottomline is we are all nepalese , cause we speak nepalese, we eat nepalese, (ma chai dal bhat tarkari nai khanchu hatle guam-guam), we all love Nepal, no matter how she is , hoina ra. then why this magar, bhote , rai, limbu, taraibasi ? Sad , Sad. Let us not get our love and attention to our motherland get diverted, just because of some ignorant stupid girl ( Nepalithitti) tried to raise something very racist and ethnic. " JANANI JANMA BHUMISCHA SWORGADAPI GARIYESI" Mother and mother land are better than the heaven , if one does exist. PEACE.............................

Now a question for you.... is there a word "gotten" for real? I mean in the dictionary? Sorry to have diverted the already diverted topic. I hope the guys get a fair judgement.
