It's my first time at this website. In fact, I happened upon it yesterday when boredom (or perhaps the heat?) drove me to surf the net. I read many of the discussion threads with much interest. I am writing this b/c I happen to be doing research on the very aspect of human interpersonal relationships. The other threads have been interesting (esp. the one on V.S. Naipaul) as well. Anyways, I meant to relay a message to the readers of this thread that rather than pursue issues such as "why there are ugly people in Boston" or analyze a woman's anatomy, it should be important to people to "try" to understand human relationships. I do not mean to sermonize or anything, but it just pains me to see how a huge chasm has somehow been created between and among people today that has led to events that surpass the far reaches of human comprehension. Events such as the upcoming 9/11 anniversary, and our own Maoist massacres back home. It was nice to see your attempt to start this thread on issues that should be at the core of human existence. Yeah, I anticipate responses from fellow Bostonians and other Nepalis who frequent this site that may inquire thus of me: What of joblessness, homelessness, hunger, and so forth that plague human lives worldwide? But have we ever stopped to think that perhaps the breach in fundamental human relations may be the cause for these misfortunes? We are all so caught up in our own world and circumscribed within our own egocentric needs that hardly a few minutes get donated to the analysis of how we interact with others and whether we understand each other's mutual and "human" needs. And when we do spend some of our time OUT of our insulated and isolated lives, for indeed it is isolated when fear of letting ourselves be "exposed" to the unknown "other" disables us from opening our hearts and minds to that "other", it is only to point and shake our fingers at them as if to say, "Hey look I'm much better off than the sorry lot that makes you folks!!" But isolated as we have become in our "frog-in-a-well" realms, we need some introspection to see who it is that we are really pointing and shaking our bony fingers at (Bony, b/c all that isolation has really drained the flesh and blood out of us to make US the "other" rather than those around us). I think the scope of his posting is ambiguous. What does he mean by "human relations"? Does he mean race relations. He does use "other" in quotes, so I am assuming he's talking about race relations. He should try to be specific.

Mr. Thita, You have proven my point!! It was interesting how you decided, as other people may have or will, that "human relations" and "other" need to be circumscribed within or slotted into a catergory, your choice being "race relations." Race relations is a very huge topic. What I was hinting at by "other" is the person right next to you....You see, by leaping onto the broad issue, you have demonstrated how people almost instantaneously choose to focus on the "big" picture, and in the process ioverlook or ignore the "smaller", more daily aspects of human relations. For instance, the one you may have with your roommate if you are a student like myself. We may speak of what let's say the Maoists as a group are doing in Nepal, but how many of us would stop to think: Really, what is going on in our one-to-one relations that is generating these global effects? Well, I think your article is misleading because of "other" in quotes. Not only that, later on, you said, "Hey look I'm much better off than the sorry lot that makes you folks" And then somewhere you used the phrase, "unknown other". It sure as hell looked like you were talking about race relations to me. Since you used "other" so often, I thought the point you were articulating had to be something.....deeper. Like I said, I felt that your posting was sort of ambiguous. It was more like a poem. Next time, let the reader decide what you're talking about. Seriously. But now I got you : you were focusing on the micro rather than the macro. That aside, I don't agree with you when you say that "breach in fundamental human relations may be the cause for these misfortunes". People in Bangladesh are supposed to be the happiest people on earth, which probably means they have good one-to-one relationships, but are they rich? Now focus your attention to the west. What do you see? Unhappy people with not so good interpersonal relationships, who have all the material wealth they desire. And mind you, that's just one aspect I covered. You can't really link problems in the macro level with problems in the micro level. We should think of them differently. Global problems have nothing to do with interpersonal relationships and vice versa, except if problems in interpersonal relationships involve leaders. Although I can't think of any examples right now, there must have been instances in history where a person of power went on a rampage because of interpersonal problems. Wait a second, Hitler is a good example. Hmm, come to think of it, you're right, interpersonal relationships CAN cause worldwide problems. I change my mind about that. However, I still believe that's not always the case. Did I get the gist of your article this time? I hope I did.

GrecianUrn alias dirty_harry, Are you OK? I was just concerned about your mental health, son! You make statements and ask questions; then you change your user name and answer your own questions. Talking you to yourself? Seeing any shrink lately? Check your ID. You are new alright. BTW, did you watch the movie "Beautiful Mind"?

Hi Grecian, It was nice to read. I go to this website once week, the time I am off from work. I feel the same way. There is too much criticism...or putting others down whenever one gets a chance. There is not even one single line in the whole website where someone has said a good thing about the other. You will see the reaction for this message I have posted for you Grecian..

Watching You, A very perceptive remark indeed. No, I don't think I need to be checked up and Yes, I've seen A Beautiful Mind. I do not wish to be defensive on the dual postings I made since I have valid reasons for both, but I don't wish to disclose them. You may make of my claim whatever you wish...as regards your assumption that I may have lost it, well, show me one person in this world who hasn't! You refer to ABMind so casually--without perhaps the faintest idea as to how real the Hallucinations were to the protagonist. Mental states are a blurry reality and not something someone of your perceptive qualities should casually venture into or lash out about. With all due respect----GrecianUrn

Grecianurn: >>Mental states are a blurry reality and not something someone of your perceptive qualities should casually venture into or lash out about. << Ouch!!!! Wasn’t that too hard on whoever intended??????? >>how real the Hallucinations were to the protagonist. With due respect, please permit me to add something…Cyber space itself is a brilliant consensual hallucination experienced daily by billions of legitimate operators all over the globe. And, hallucination to protagonists reminds me of these – “Does proving there’s a devil prove that there’s a god?” (Dostoevsky) “Does proving there’s no god prove that there’s no devil?” (M.D, 2001) Hallucinations…..more hallucinations…the only thing I know is hallucinatory knowing brings one to false conclusions too soon :) Now, back to the original post….there’s a natural ebb and flow in relationship, a movement between intimacy and distance. Talking about interpersonal relationship, regardless of age/sex/race/creeds, it thrives only under mutual trusts / respect compatible enough core beliefs and priorities, ability to flex between focussing on my needs, your needs and our needs. Communication skills : awareness, empathetic listening then comes respectful asserting etc etc.. Let us all live in harmony!!!!!!
