When I read Sally's comment regarding advertizing boxes popping up, I thought it would be helpful for the majority to know how to stop these nuisances from bothering you.

Advertizing companies are smart. They have used many techniques to get to you. Currently, they implant their softwares in your computer through sly methods such as a small checkbox that you leave checked while you are installing some free software. Or when you visit some site, you get a popup notice that you click OK to close.

When you go to a website, if you get a popup box with options to click Yes or No or whatever, it would be in your best interest to click the X at the top right of the browser window to close the window itself. Many people who don't know the guerrilla tactics of the advertizing companies, will click the YES or NO button IN the page, which actually gives the browser the ability to install these hidden or spy softwares.

Chances are, your computer already has many of these ad softwares running. If you get popups out of nowhere, your computer is afflicted. Here is what you can do, besides being careful about closing the windows using the CLOSE (X) at the top right, and being careful of what you leave CHECKED when installing other softwares:

Go to http://www.lavasoftusa.com/downloads.html
and download their recent Ad-Aware software. Install this software and RUN it. Thier program keeps track of major hidden ad softwares and it will give you an opportunity to see how inflicted your computer is. Get rid of all those softwares.

If you need further help, feel free to contact me.

Regards,
San

Euta Thita Posted on 12-Sep-02 04:58 PM

I downloaded moosoft anti-trojan software three days ago. Guess what, I didn't know that Kazaa comes bundled with a Trojan(or a spyware, whatever you like to call it) called BDE. I immediately cleaned up the trojan. I was wondering why my popups were always of the topic, "Do you have hidden porn files in your computer? Find out, click this". It was coz they were gathering info about my habits.

San:

Thanks…a great help. I have downloaded that software. My browser window would often get cluttered with irksome pop up ads esp of webcams, softwares and holiday spots and I’d just hit the close button in distress though I’m quiet aware of the consequences you mentioned.

>>>Can someone give me URL of websites that will allow me to identify IP addresses that are trying to hack into my computer?

What for Siwalik…do you want to crack the other computer? Quid pro quo, eh? ;)

There are heaps of free softwares for detecting IP address. You can download them from www.webattack.com. However, most of ‘em aren’t cookies free. Even when we browse a particular site, and leave a piece of information, say our email adds, the next day we get spams from related sites. It’s possible because of the use of cookies by websites linked directly to one that we visited.

Another thing, for people accessing the internet through dial-up modem, the computer’s IP address is different every time they call but, if it’s a DSL or a cable modem, one may or may not have a static or changing IP address.

However, to identify an attempted break-in, the first steps you need to take are to identify the system(s) that the user(s) are using. If you are in US, you can easily configure the Real Secure console to use DNS, and then click on the resolve host name button that is on the display screen. In rare occasions, the host name cannot be found. If the DNS look-up fails, then try converting the IP address into a host name other ways (nslookup, dnsquery etc). Real Secure has an event that will identify an attempt to exploit the WIZ command in Send mail. This event identifies any instance of WIZ in a mail message. If the WIZ occurs in the body of the e-mail/message, then it is clearly not an attempted intrusion.

You can use ARIN (www.arin.net) to convert IP addresses into host names, and NetSol (www.networksolutions.com) to lookup the address owner's contact/technical information. However, this is just the theoretical information from my side. I am yet to break into other people’s system ;)))))

I should have refrained myself frm saying all these infront of web mastero San:)))

Siwalik,
Looks like you are looking for a firewall software. I personally use Zone Alarm that you can download HERE.

SIWALIK Posted on 13-Sep-02 10:31 AM

No, I am looking for the sites that will tell me where the infiltration is coming from. I had a couple of sites from Zone Alarm but cannot find them now. I just want to locate the places attempting to infiltrate my computer. I just plug in the Ip addresses in the site and I am told where that is located.

Any idea?

Sanji,

"PS: Sajha.com does not install anything into your computer, and sajha.com does not have any pop up advertizements. "

However, I see Reply to: form with my User Name and email address at the bottom of each thread or when I click on Reply even though I am not logged-in. I actually tried to find related cookie/set-up to avoid this bhandafod of my user ID, all in vain. ????????
San Posted on 13-Sep-02 11:55 AM

Hi Satya,
Almost any website you go to will put a cookie in your browser. That's a given fact. We need cookies to enable a Login Section so that the computer know's it's you. Also in a customizable site like sajha, the computer needs to identify which location you have set as your default location. Cookie helps in finding out number of unique computers that come to a site.

If I were you, I wouldn't worry about cookies, specially from sajha.com since they are harmless and only try to make your experience here easier. Plus you might have missed the discussions long time back on sajha.com on how we needed to have an ID set for anonymous posters. You could probably see it in the archives. The pre-populating of your username and emailaddress are done thru the use of cookies for your own convenience.

Please rest assured that sajha.com does not benefit in any way by puting these cookies. My statement meant it does not install any softwares or any spy wares like some sites out there do.
Satya Posted on 13-Sep-02 12:21 PM

Thanks San!

"Please rest assured that sajha.com does not benefit in any way by puting these cookies. My statement meant it does not install any softwares or any spy wares like some sites out there do."

I am 100% assured that nobody will be harmed by sajha.com. I never had doubt about this. But I don't like to see my user ID even though I am not replying to a thread. It's O.K. if it comes when I hit on Reply. I want democracy! You might silence me by saying I have a choice not to visit sajha.com!

Any way, thanks for the great job for bringing so many people on sajha platform.

Talking about ad-aware, I had used that downloadable program a month ago. Just be careful what you delete. One of the hidden ad software was using my system files and when I deleted it, windows wouldn't load up. I had to re-install the OS. Just a reminder be careful when you delete anything using ad-aware.
SOULFREE Posted on 13-Sep-02 02:41 PM

Your choice.... Kazaa uses cydor which is a spyware. I knew a website that has information on using getting rid of cydors and yet run kazaa. Actually your kazaa becomes faster this way. I tried to find it, but i couldn't. I will post the name of the website as soon as possible... Sorry to make you wait... Its just that its friday and I am quite busy today... ill post it tomorrow. (most probably) ;)
Diva_Starz Posted on 14-Sep-02 06:41 AM

When Kazaa is installed, in addition to cydoor other spy wares as webhancer, TOPtext, onflow, New net etc get itself installed.

To remove all these one by one and run Kazaa spyware free and more efficiently, please go through the detailed information provided in this... this is perhaps what Soulfree was mentioning too..
