KHAI TA?

“Hey purba, purba”, Contuktor shouted. I was standing at Biratnagar bus park with Ramesh, a cousine of mine. I just wanted to get the hell out Kathmandu for some days but was not sure where to go. Last Saturday when Ramesh called on me, I told him that I wanted to get out of kathmandu for somewhere for few days. I said, “battina ta yata tira…” Ramesh proposed an option. I liked the invitation but then I said, …garmi hola ni ta.! pilsiyera basnu parne ho ki….feri **** lamkhutte le dhurukka parchha tyaha…”. He cut me off and said, “hya **** khurukka aaija….bhedetar tira tongba pani tanna jaanu parchha, tyas pachhi sabai thik hunchha.” Tongba? Allright. Janai paryo! I got few things to care of before I could leave leave. So, I told him “Budhbar aauchhu.”

And there I was in Biratnagar. It was quite a different place from my tole in ktm. The place was still hot during the day under the Asoj sun. His house was at Bargachhi. We went to Jogbani the next day, watched a movie then sat on a roadside restaurant for some Jilebi. Neither of us missed any opportunity to thank some shopping gracious ladies, who seemed no less sweeter than those jilibe pieces dancing in our mouth with tounge between teeth leaving behind provocated lips, with our eyes.

Friday morning, Naran uncle (Ramesh’s father) asked Ramesh to goto kaamat. “ja yo barasey diyera aaija Chhedilal lai…asti dekhi bhani ra thyo…Deep lai pani liyera ja..”. Bhat with farsi ko munta, jhaneko dal, kakra ko haleko achar, ra dahi dakarera we went to Rangeli then to his kaamat from there on his HeroHonda.

In the evening, we sat by the kaali mandir on main road. “jaljala ma cinema herne?” Ramesh asked. I was so tired that day. I did not want to watch any movie. “Bhaigo aaja”, I answered. He looked at a guy collecting tea glasses and said, “khai ek ko dui le yaha..”
I looked at him with a question mark. What is ek ko dui? He explained, “ek cup chiya lai duita glass ma le bhanya”. That was new to me. There I heard many people asking for ek ko dui, tin ko panch, dui ko chaar….Nice style. “We have to come here tomorrow morning”.., he said, “..bholi sanibar ho ni bhid bhad hunchha…”then he smiled.

I was a regular pashupati goer on Saturdays. So, it was just nothing there at Kalimandir compare to kathmandu but still new place, new faces. Dui char wati lai najar ban prahar garna paiyo, ramailo bho!

In the evening, he took me to Tin Tolia and said, “yaha ta **** bharmar sundari haru chhan”. Huna ta jahada road, tin paini, pokharia sabai tira sundari haru nabhetya ta hainan. But still, Tin tolia was special. Special? Yep! Ramesh took me to a house there in Tin Tolia. “This is Sushma aunty’s house, he said. “Who is Sushma aunty? I asked. “She is my mom’s cousin you don’t know her”, Ramesh explained. He parked his bike outside the compond wall before I could say I was not really interested in going to any Sushma aunty’s house. I mentioned that to Ramesh when he was to open the gate but he said, “You have to. You got to meet Shibani”, he smiled. Before I could ask who Shibani was, Ramesh opened the compound gate and we entered. “Aunty, Namaskar” Ramesh greeted a lady who had just come out to veranda hearing the gate opened. “Arre, Ramesh…aau aau, replying his Namaskar she spoke.

“This is Deep, my cousin from Kathmandu” He introduced me to her as we were about to take steps to veranda after passing a Tulashi ko math. I also greeted her with a Namaskar. She gave us a welcome-smile as she replied my greeting. She took us to the living room. After the first round of talk about how is everybody she walked out of the room for kitchen to get tea, I guess, for us. I, then, asked Ramesh in dabeko swar, “Who is Shibani?” He just smiled at me then started to look at the money plant. “Ye…yata her” , I called Ramesh. He didn’t. Aunty came back to the room. “ani…aruharu khai ta? where is suman?” Ramesh asked aunty. “Ye…suman ta khai bahira ga chha kata ho, uncle ta Hetauda mai hunuhunchha.. Shibani kitchen ma chhe”, Shushma aunty replied. I was thinking what’s up this Shibani? “Shibani, naam ta solid chha”. I repeated the name “Shibani”. I thought, “Shibani lai nabheti Shibani le banako chya khana paine bho jasto chha.” Then I asked my najanido kisimle romanchit heart to take it easy.

Mailo mailo luga laki yastai 10/12 barsaki almost jingring pareki girl walked in with two cups of tea and some biscuits. “la &^%$# yahi ho ki kyaho Sibani?” "baaki aaudai chha, hai.."

...Sorry guys, I was away from this place. So, I couldn't post the rest of "Khai ta?" earlier. I apologize.

****
.......con't..

..."Taara, chiya biscuit tyahi rakhde, tablema", Sushma aunty asked the girl. I was relieved. Thank god, this is not Shibani. After talking about this that and after chiya biscuit, Ramesh said, "Suman chhaina rechha ta... Shibani sanga yasso bolera janu paro". Oh, Ok, she is in the kitchen, aunty spoke and got up to escort us to the kitchen, I think. She also yelled, "Shibaaaaniiii". Taara came out of the kitchen and said, 'didi ta chhat ma jaanu bho". "Chhat ma chhe re...jao na ta timiharu mathi", aunty suggested and went inside the kitchen. We got to the chhat. There she was, SHIBANI! my god! " Aaamaaa! Ramesh Dai! sanchhai hunuhunchha?.." she spoke in a soft but excited voice. "Thik chha,..ani timi ni?" Ramesh asked. She briefly looked at me and answered him just by smiling and slightly tiliting her head to the left. She looked at me again. "Yo Deep, kathmandu bata aako....my cousin" he introduced me. She did a namaste and maintained her muskan for me as well. I mean, damn. She was awesome. Yeah, I thought almost all young girls were awesome those days but she was blessed with heavenly beauty. That was my impression, anyway. We spoke for about 15/ 20 minutes then left. I was not feeling that good. I thought she was not really giving me any corner to advance. "Bal nadya jasto lagyo". I am a decent good looking man. There were girls behind me but Shibani is not interested in me? I couldn't believe.

"Yaar, Shibani le malai ta baal nadya jasto lagyo....kasto **** bawal", I vented my frustration. "Aba ke talai bhetne bittikai..kiss dinu paryo ta****?", Ramesh addressed my frustration. Did you not feel that she was not interested in me? I asked with a hope. "Nooooo", He answered. Felt little better.

After that Ramesh and I were circling around her neighborhood regularly. Ramesh’s sis was a friend of Shibani. So, we also used to know about her moves from her. If we knew Shibani is going for shopping in the main street, there we were. If she were going to Jogbani, Jogbani was your destination. You even used to hang around gudadi if we got the information of her sabji shopping. We bumped to each other in many occasions. She was gradually opening herself to me, so I felt. "Biratnagar trip ramailo hune bho", aanand lagyo. I even saw Shibani a couple of times in my dream….tyo pani yasto oosto haina aangalo mai…". Talk about dream, sweet dream.

We were not feeling comfortable, not anymore, in circling around her every day. Afterall, reputation bigarnu ta chhaina. “Khali chakkar matrai katera ke garne? Besides I am not here for good…I will be returning to ktm. in a few days….so, I wanted things to be assembled for me as soon as possible…” I was saying to myself. Next morning, Naran uncle asked Ramesh to go to Tanki sinwari and get something done. Ramesh asked if I would want to come with him. I was not feeling that good that morning. So, I passed. After meal, I went to chhat and started to look around. Bargachhi, after all, did not look that bad. Sandhya, Ramesh’s sis, came and joined me. "Ani deep dai, how are you liking B’nagar this time? She asked. "Nice. I am liking it….Tin tolia is interesting", I answered. Why just tin tolia? She looked at me with a "malai thaha-chha" herai. "Did Shibani say something about me to Sandhya?" I thought. But I said, "well, Bargachhi pani ramailo chha…” then I asked, “kina ni yo tole ko nau bargachhi?" “Didn’t you see that big bar tree on Bargachhi chowk?” “Bargachhi means “Bartree” she clarified. There are places called Aapgachhi..Topgachhi purwa ma…she went on with a couple of gachhi names. “Do they have “Top (cannon) tree there in Topgachhi?” I looked at her with a question. She just smiled. We just talked for a while on this and that. Then suddenly she asked, “aaja pani Tin tolia tira jane hola ni saajh ma, haina?”. Now, I knew Sandhya knows what am I up to? I just looked at her. She smiled and said, “Shibani bhanthi..achel ta din dinai Deep ra Ramesh dai ko darshan paainchha”.
“Sandhya, how is Shibani? What kind of girl she is?” I asked her. “Why do you want to know” she asked. She was continuously smiling throughout our conversation. “kina rey? Ma ta sapana ma pani Shibani nai dekhna thali sake..” I boldly told her. She laughed little louder at this then said, “You’re not the only one Deep dai, there are many more guys here in B’nagar who dream about her day and night”. “aru le dekhya sapana sanga ta malai matlab chhaina tara Shibani le chahi kasaiko sapana dekhya chha ki chhaina ni?” I asked. Somewhere inside I thought Shibani may have told Sandhya that “Deep” is whom she wants to be with. “ek choti bhanthi she likes Udaya rey”. Damn!! “Who is this Uday?” I was suddenly having a competitor. Heart received a blow. “Chha tyaha devkota chowk ko euta…ramarai chha”, Sandhya said. Thukka! I felt.
Later when Ramesh came, I asked him, “Ko yo **** Udaya bhanya ? Sandhya was saying Shibani likes him….” “ye tyo **** Udaya! Devkota chowk ko…chakkar kat-thyo nikkai…but that was 2/3 months ago. I don’t think things worked out between them.” Mann ali halungo bho. “If she was still falling for Udaya why would she be drawing herself nearer and nearer towards you? Kya yaar ta pani…..pahilo din ra achel Shibani ko byabahar change bhako dekhdainas?” Ramesh asked. Yeah, he was right. She was showing much interest on me lately. I knew it. My calculation!!!
In the evening, we went to kaali mandir again. Then we started to hang around there. I saw Shibani on a ricksaw heading south towards traffic chowk. I looked at Ramesh, jutta ma ke tassiyo bhanera herdai thiyo so I just didn’t bother him. Shibani saw me. Gave me a big smile and passed. As soon as she passed, I told Ramesh that Shibani just passed on a ricksaw with a big smile for me. “maile bhanya haina **** talai…”, Ramesh spoke and looked at the direction of going ricksaw. Mann dherai dherai halungo bho. I thought, well I should disappear from her radar for a couple of days. Let’s see what she thinks about me. Will she miss me? She sure will but how much? And what she thinks about me when I am not around? …I knew she will definitely speak with Sandhya and I will know from her. Alikati “tadap” dina paryo Shibani lai. I told Ramesh what I just thought. He agreed. So, I said, “ Ooso bhaye bholi Dharan jam yaar…tyo bus stand nera ko hall ma cinema pani heram”. “ke tyo Ganesh Taakij?…aba ta thotro bhaisakyo yaar to hall..” Ramesh said. “Bhaye pani…”,I spoke. We agreed on going to Dharan tomorrow, watch a movie then go to Damak and stay there for the night. We got some relatives there, as well. Naran uncle was happy to know that we were planning on visiting his siter there in Damak.
After dinner, I told Sandhya that Dharan ko Ganesh Taakij ma cinema herne karyakram pani chha”. At this, she said “Indra ma pani herna jaanus na cinema…tin tolia ma… Shibaniko ghar najikai chha…”Cinema ramro chha…herna pathaide na tero daiharu” lai bhanthi aghi…shibani….hanuman mandir nera tapaiharu lai dekheki thi re haina?” Sandha asked. “ I was delighted”. Sandhya was a good source of information.
Tomorrow morning, bhat khayera we went to Dharan on Ramesh’s herohonda. Enjoyed coke at Bhanu chowk then bought tickets for 12/ 3 show at Ganesh taakij. We were wandering around then suddenly Ramesh spoke ,”la… la…. la… tyo ta Urmi, yaar”. I followed his eyes and reached Urmi. There was this young lady in electric blue sari getting on a Bashantapur-bound bus. She was beautiful…huna ta malai ta jo pani beautiful lagne! “ko Urmi?” I asked Ramesh. “ma tyasko lagi paagal bhako yaar…last year college ma. She was from Urlabari….then she stopped coming to the college”. Ramesh said. “bya garisaki holi”, I spoke. He didn’t like what I said. “saari laudaima bya garya hunchha?” he asked. He was right, saari laudaima ke bya garya hunthyo. “chya sya pani sangai khane gari sakya thim..” Ramesh was giving me hints. Then, I said, ok, let’s follow this bus. Let’s see if she recognizes you. Are you crazy? He asked. “Do you want to meet her or not”, I asked. “yeah, but…we already have tickets for the movie….” Forget about the movie, I said. Your movie seems more interesting to me. Let’s roll. He hesitated. I forced. So, there we were following a bus. We didn’t know where were we going.
Bus riched bhedetar and stopped. Originally, we planned on having Tongba there. But right then we couldn’t even though it was cold there because we were on a different mission. Urmi didn’t get off the bus. We just had tea then started to chase the bus as it rolled. After a descent to leuti (?) fedi, we were running by the leuti banks. Then crossed the turbulent Tamor river. The bridge over Tamor was nice. Ookalo..ookalo…oralo..ookalo gardai we reached Dhankuta bus stand. There, Urmi got off. Bunch of people also got off. I asked Ramesh to move on towards her. He was gathering himself together to move on but then we saw she was coming towards us. There was this man with her. Ramesh hesitated. She came right in front of us and passed us. Damn! Damn! Damn!!! She was married. A tiny line of sindoor on her hair partition was shining right in our eyes…more on Ramesh’s eyes. She didn’t even acknowledge him. Ouch! Hami ta herya herai.
I was trying to cheer Ramesh up. “talai ta bal diyina aba arka swasni samjhera ke dikka manchhas….”. He looked at me and said, “thukka….kya bore….herna lako cinema pani chhutyo….chinya nachinyai po gari yaar…” Are you sure this is the same Urmi? I asked and smiled. **** lai dinchhu ahile ani…Ramesh spoke.
“la aba ke garne afulai ta tragedy pari halyo…Ramesh asked. It was around 3 PM. I said, “show me Dhankuta bazaar around then will see what else should we be doing” I said. We walked up. On our way up he said, “Tongba pani tanna paiyena bhedetar ma”. “Yaha paidaina tongba”, I asked. “Tongba ta hile ma khatara hunchha”, Ramesh spoke. “Jau na ta hid”, I suggested. “It’s already getting late, we got to go back to Damak, remember?” Ramesh spoke. I told him there is no need to goto Damak if we can have good time here. Damak is not going anywhere. We can go there later. “But buwa le ke bhannu hunchha…Dhankuta aaune kuro thiyena…jhan yaha basne ta kurai ootheko thiyena..”, Ramesh was little worried. I asked him not to worry. I went to a phone, called Narayan uncle and said, “Uncle, I wanted to visit Dhankuta. So, we are here now. Is it ok if we go to Damak tomorrow? Because we don’t want to ride the bike thru these hilly roads at night.” Uncle said, “thik chha, don’t ride at night”. He also spoke with Ramesh and said the samething. So, we were free. He showed me Thado bazaar, mathlo kopche, tallo kopche, Bihibare hat place, gokundeshowr (?) high school, tudikhel then back to bus park. Urmi and Shibani were the foucus of our talk. We had made up our mind on going to Hile for Tongba.
Hile was 14 kms. north from there. At Hile, we reserved a room, ordered for food then started to enjoy Tongba. That was a Tongba night. Enjoyed a lot. We freely talked about Urmi and Shibani. Tongba with Shibani was really intoxicating to me. Ke dinner khayiyo ramro yaad chhaina.
Next morning, When I came out of the hotel I was really impressed by the town. It was a nice town. Crisp air, beautiful scene. It was cold, though. We went to a gumba there. “yata bata gayo bhane pakhribas puginchha…there is a krisi farm…town is nice…”, Ramesh spoke. I was not interested in going to pakhribas, so showed no enthusiasm. After a while around nine o’ clock we headed down towards Dhankuta and Dharan. Dhankuta ma bhat khane karyakram thiyo. Pet umathera aayo mero while descending. “Ramesh, feri chiya khana man lagyo, yaar…pet umathyo”. I said. “Ok, kagati……chiya khaula”, I heard Ramesh saying. “I don’t like kagati chiya”, I told him. He slowed down the bike and said, “There is a place called Kagate pokhari, we will drink tea there bhanya…kasle **** kagati chiya khane bhayo?” . “Ok…ke nam ta kagati? Suntala rakhya bhe ni hune ni…dhankuta ma suntala falne haina dher?” I asked. “nakara ****”, Ramesh said.
We reached Kagate. Ramesh stopped the bike and took off his helmet. I got off and stretched. Right then, A motorbike passed us…..with a lightening strike. Ramesh and I looked at each other. “yatti bihanai……” I spoke…couldn’t believe what I just saw. “Mandir jaane bhanera hidya hola ni ta…”Ramesh spoke. “oohi hain ta?” I asked Ramesh with bhari mann. He just looked at me. “Tyo **** bike chalaune chahi ko ni?, “ I asked Ramesh with little anger. “Tyahi ta ho ni **** udaya”, he spoke. We just stood there. Ramesh spoke again, “Taile sakinas ta, **** Khai ta…..?”.

Biratnagar ko Mom's haru ani Mom's ko chwank chwank daughter's haru -- daughter's haru highly influenced by hindi movies -- they always acted like madhuri dixit -- Love parne style pani hindi film ko jastai -- I think that was little bit different in kathmandu. main road ko Peda ra Lassi -- baje ko pasal ko bhaat ra khashi ko mashu, ganesh hall nirai ko MOMO (momo was so hard to find, and i was soo momo sick when i went to biratnagar) -- and Mom's ra Daughter's had that funny nepali accent -- which sounded soo cool to listen to... biratnagar was fun--deep ko story was cool-- arko story ni jaawosh na deeep bro-- (indu ra shibani pachi arko ko???)
