I think a Gore-Clinton match-up in 2004 would be wonderful.

Hil weighing run for Prez
Mon Sep 16, 7:19 AM ET
By KENNETH R. BAZINET
DAILY NEWS WASHINGTON BUREAU

WASHINGTON - Hillary Clinton ( news - web sites) for President?

The answer is yes. It's only a question of when, well-placed sources said yesterday.

The insiders told the Daily News the New York senator is eying a return to the White House in 2008 or beyond.

"The sense is that both she and President Clinton ( news - web sites) would like to see her run for President, but their first priority is getting a Democrat elected to the White House in 2004," said a longtime Clinton insider.

"It may be '08. It may be '12. It may be never. What she's not going to be is stupid about this. She's going to take her time and make sure she does her job as senator," the source said.

At least two other sources close to the Clintons confirmed talk of Hillary Clinton launching a bid to return to the White House has picked up steam among members of the couple's inner circle.

Clinton kept her plans close to the vest yesterday but - in Clintonesque fashion - what she didn't say was as key as what she did say.

When asked on NBC's "Meet the Press" if she would accept the nomination for President or veep in 2004, Clinton repeated previous assertions that she would "absolutely not" run and she was "110%" sure of that.

When pressed about 2008, Clinton didn't rule out a run outright, saying twice she had "no plans" and "no intention" of running.

Asked why Clinton appeared to avoid a simple yes or no regarding a run in 2008 - when she will be 61 - or after, spokeswoman Karen Dunn said, "She was clear she's not running."

The Associated Press reported last month that Bill Clinton has talked about his wife seeking the White House as a question of "when," not "if."

In July, Hillary Clinton scored 20% support in a CNN/USA Today/Gallup presidential poll, a close second to Al Gore ( news - web sites)'s 28%.

Clinton has managed to pull off surprises in her two years in the Senate. She has shed her frosty First Lady image, throwing a baby shower for Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Tex.) and even winning kudos from former detractors like Senate Minority Leader Trent Lott (R-Miss.).

you mean clinton-gore. the presidential candidate "is" listed first; the vice-presidential candidate "is" listed second. the article does mention her as a possible vp candidate, but your thread title doesn't. which "is" your preference, if any--clinton-gore or gore-clinton?
paramendra Posted on 17-Sep-02 04:35 PM

Gore-Clinton in 2004.
dirk Posted on 18-Sep-02 07:38 AM

Hillary will run for prez in 2008. She's pretty smart.....probably feels that Bush will carry a 2nd term with this impending Iraq/Saddam imbroglio and the war-on-terrorism, although the economy is in shambles. By 2008, she'd have had quite a few years years under her belt as a NY senator, and hopefully will be able to muster enough support within the Democratic Party to make a strong case for her candidacy. There doesn't seem to be any other charismatic leader in the party. It's high time that the "greatest democracy in the world" have a woman president.

I dont think Gore will want to run for VP again. He has served that position for 8 years and the man almost became the president himself.

On Hillary, I think she will make a good president even though it will be very difficult for her to win as there is a significant % of ppl who are very opposed to her and would never vote for her. In a way, she suffers from the same problem that Gore suffered from: ppl judging her based on the way she delivers her speeches.

Also, I think it would be better for her to run in 2004 than 2008 unless Bush'es ratings are sky high from the "wars". Even then, one has to consider that Sr. Bush was defeated even after having some of the highest favourable ratings in history after the war with Iraq. Mainly because of "the economy stupid" strategy. Hillary could do the same. I think if she waits till '08, she would be termed an "insider" and the economy might have swung back to an expansion by then. That would then be an uphill battle. I think Hillary will be a good president and hope she runs in 2004. Hey, if a father and son can be presidents, then why not a husband and wife?

Do you think it is a testimony to the prevalent sexism that Hillary might never ever run for President? Jib Jab's comment - "...new york's finest and bravest said it all when hil took the stage during the concert for new york...." is an example of MCP hostility.
Pooonte Posted on 18-Sep-02 04:10 PM

NY's finest and the bravest includes plenty of women as well...

There are few precedents in presidential history when road maps are clearly drawn. JFK's senate role was a precursor to nation wide office.
In '94 when the polls showed GB leading Ann Richards talk had started about the run for WH soon after the reelection.
HRC will run for presidency in '08 after she wins reelection. '04 is a question mark, depending on the polls during summer '04- she's excellent in 'mauka ma hira phodne'- I know it.
I personally liked Ferraro for VP in '84, she didn't win but made less alien the notion of a woman in white house. Not that I like women over men but that I don't want women to be any less regarded as men.
The invisible primary is largely silent about HRC so a run in '04 is not happening, unless as the vp candidate of AG- who I think will win the democratic nomination again.

Parmendraji,

I totally agree with you. I would love to see Hillary Clinton as the first woman American president. I admire her immensely. I got the opportunity to meet her in Nepal in 1994 when she came to visit South east Asia and hence Nepal. I think she has ALL the qualities of becoming America's first lady president. Moreover, she has had the first hand experience watching her own husband for 8 sucessful years 24/7. That's the most valuable experience any woman running for the President can wish for. On top of that, she's no dummy...she's a lawyer graduating from good schools like Yale and Wellesley.

I think she's a great role model. It's high time America, the super power, has a female president. Isin't it amazing that third world countries who hardly believe in equality of men and women already have female Presidents and Prime Ministers ( for example..Pakistan, bangladesh, India(developing country)..etc.) America needs one sooon!!
She would be an excellent President for America. I am waiting for that day...

hillary and chelsea visited nepal in 1995, not 1994. i recall their motorcade being attacked in the terai, and, if i'm not mistaken, the weapon of choice was chapaals, and the "naxalites" were chanting "imperialists go home!" you should've seen the look on the face of the nepali ambassador to the u.s. when it came on the tv!

My mistake..it was march 1995. I checked my picture taken with her.

SOUTH ASIA..it was a typo. Thanx for pointing it out. be nice..you don't have to be that rude.

One or two typo does not undermine my graduation with summa cum laude.

Nope, it was not a typo, just admit it. Lots of folks make that mistake. Heh, don't try to cover up your ignorance. We're not gonna fall for that.
