Kya ho Jira-ji, darjeeling ko basinda nai ho ki paryatak matrai? Interesting sambaad...tara tapain ko "himal herera" bhag dui ko pratikchhya ajhai chha hai!
talking of songs, was listening to Prem Raja Mahat's folk songs this morning (I hear he's in Baltimore these days)...suna maaya hiunchuli ma hiun...larke joban bhana kallai diun...nice songs, but his CD cover is hideous!

All the famous places you guys mentioned...bani's, keventers,bhola ko aalodum....Yumm...birch hill, chowrasta,shrubbery park....oh my god I missed almost everything.Did you know that why bhola's aalodum was tasty? Because when he mixes his seegaain in it.That was the rumour before...hhaaaaaaaaahha! Anyway, it was nice to read your all messages.

Okay thought for the day:
Since Dasain is around the bend and since I always get nostalgic during this time, I thought I'd share a few nostalgic moments with you all.
The tailors getting busy with stitching suits, liang's getting hounded for shoes, the kaiyas hiking up their prices and yes the weather, ohhh the weather. The one and only time that all of darjeeling gets rid of the rains. (NP guys, not counting all those sunshine holidays that you all got while we were dakhamakai in the tuwalo). Chowrasta ma seasoners haru ko bhid. And Darjeeling staying up till midnight! :)
Tihar ma dates haru banaudai ko hattar. Kun samaj ley kasko gharma deusi khelney. Kasley beech gulli ko kaiya lai dhamkayera pateka sorney :). Sayapatri ra supari phool doko doko orient ko ukkalo ma bechirako. Sabai ko ghar ma naya rang ko ganda (yes ganda, baasna is not a word in the dictionary of darjeeling folks). :) Selroti polney manchey khojnu ko hattar!
UFFFF....how I miss that!

Since we are very much aware of the beauty queen "Darjeeling" and it seems like everybody is out of the town & as a result everybody is missing our very own dialogue style, traditions,favorite cafe and all the important places.And on the top of that,we gather our memories from the same era.Who knows.... we might know each others.Why not we start sharing our email addresses? How you guys like my approach? I will wait till I get the vote then I will share my email address to all of you.

Suna & Village people..definately we must be from the same era....your pre- dasain dayz...the tailorz bz..going to Pasupati for new clothes...Thana ukalo ko Lopsang ko readymade jacket n track shoes..his neva ending slogan.. "bro eutai piece cha tyo pani bhai le Kathmandu bata leyaeko..size na bhaye ra bechnu dheko". Yes Liangs ko boots..I remember that guy Liangs who alwayz acted like a principal rather than a shoe salesman. Heard hez left darj for goot and gone to Canada...may be some of you guyz can still wear his boots if you feel home sick..hehehe
Phoo ko momo waz betta then Penangz..but the location waz kinda yucky..despite the fact the momoz tasted superb. I once had a Pizza @ dikivas..uummm frankly at that time I din't know wot a Pizza waz..util I got to eat from Pizza hut. Now I realize wot I ate in dikivas waz some kinda Tibetian bread made Pizza style. Oh yeah tyo maathi pati ko Lunar resturant... a decent lovers joint. Feri tala motor stand ko Golghar restuarant..we had to climb a stairz like boarding a Plane b4 we actually got to the restuarant..and I remember below all those Moochi bhaiyaz bz making Dingo Boots without knowing wot they were doing. Tyo pachdi pati ko darjee line..where most of the tailorz were only used to resizing jeanz pant brought from Pasupati...euta thiyoni "Shankar' alwazy drunk and used to say" bholi bro aaja ma bz choo dasain ko suit seelaunu ma...sala suit ta jindagi bhar naseelako justo anuhar theyo ni tesko.
Suni timile tyo Singamari ko eutai taxi Green Austin chadyo??? rest all were Ambi..I still remember that driver who used to curse coz no one wanted to get into his cab..we used to call it kachuwa..its waz real slow.

I guess I rode that taxi too.During my 1st year promotion exams, I had to got off from the taxi in singtam pathak ( It's between Govt. college and NP)cause it had some technical problem and had to walk from there and I got half an hour late to my economics third paper. I was so panic and everything I had remembered that day was all gone with the wind. You don' t know how much I cursed that taxi driver that day.

Deep, tks. A lot may have changed over the years but there is this constant: Kanchanjunga.
Talking about Kanchanjunga, here's from my darj collection. A Bangali Babu gets up early in the mroning, and all excited, asks the taxi driver waiting for him outside the hotel, "Is Kanchanjunga available today?"

This is the picture of Kakjhora tara chota ki bara? I walked this road throughout my whole school and college life.This was the easy point to get off and get on to the train for Ghoom ko keta haru lai.On the left side of the first house, there was a small dokan and downstairs of that dokan used to have night school where Kabindra sir used to run coaching class for school final exams.He had put one big bhakari (Room Heater) in the center of the class room which obtacles the small peek of the good looking people. For Suna's quiz, I can not answer all of them but still I will try okay.

Suna.I too heard now the whole town is fulla Mochiz n fruit vendorz.....Nini aaji sold her shop to someone else heard the Momoz nolonger taste the same....Tyo shafale beechne Pala must be still shuttling between motor stand and Chowk Bazar....Rink ko terso ko Achar vendorz must hv all got a job in da Hill Council..so no onez continuing their profession nomore (sad but true).
On saturdayz I used to buy old bookz nad magazine in front of the post Office from dat Bengali guy and his son..uumm can't remember his name??

Something has to be done about movie-going scene in Darjeeling. Folks over there have no place to enjoy large silver screen anymore.
Capitol Theater, as you probably know, has been turned into DGHC office building. And Rink Cinema Hall has been leveled to the ground. I have heard they will build shopping center cum multiplex theater there, but you know how the construction work goes in that part of the world. So no movie halls for Darjeelingeys for now.
Not that I care much about the movies themselves. But the movie-going culture is what I miss, don't you? Remember...

It was so good to read all that stuff about Darj. It did bring back fond/old memories. Did spend a good five years there . First in Loreto college and then on to NP. How could I forget that trecherous climb from the LC hostel to college every morning? OH! and the Keema Parathas at NP Corner????? I did meet the Didi from NP Corner in Kathmandu. It was a jolt from the past. I am sure many of you did take that famous hike to Tiger Hill. Well I did it twice and boy was it awesome!!

What about that Bhaiya's shop as you crossed the street to get into the hostel! And while at college, whiling away time by sitting on those grassy slopes (even though we were not allowed to)......and of course attracting attention from passers-by (obviously guys).......the clanging of the bell from the Danda ko Temple........could there be more disturbances than that. Oops! and were you there when that Tibetan lady used to teach Nepali! I think she hated all of us who had done our ICSE! She used to make us sit in the first row and ask us the most questions!!!!!Boy, how I hated Nepali classes!! Not to forget the Counselors always trying to catch people at fault and GROUNDING those unfortunate ones!!!!!!!!! Life goes on...........

Ho Ho..tyo black garne Bhotini ko naam Bhauju thiyo n she alwayz kept her money between her tits which waz quite premitive kinda "purse" by Darj standards. She used to swear a lot...which waz her trade mark.
Remembering all the funny Bhoot..right from Aloobari all da way to toonsoong...kusto kusto bhoot thiyo ni.."Kahini magne"..."Malai Bok bhane"...those beautiful white sari clad "chudel" doing the vanishing act. Unfortunately I neva really got to meet or even see one.
Sangey..talking about movies..tyo Rink Cinema ko Balcony row ma (If my memory serve me well) tyo D 11 ra 12 ko beech am chai Pillar thiyo...once ma fren took his date and got this seat...after da movie he was cursing non stop..poor guy. He said that Pillar waz indeed very big whereby he had to literally walk to his date and ask if she way enjoying the movie...haat pani samaunu nahune re..the seats were so apart.. .hahahaha
Suna...didn't know u were a guruama...anyway thanks for the correction..I simply forgot to mention German Bajey for reasons unknown. Anyway now dat place has become like some bz street of Calcutta I guess with shops on both the sides.

Ok, here's DARJEELING ko momo ko recipe I got from my mom:
For one kg. of Maida dough, the following fillings are required.
- 800gm. chopped onion
- 200gm. Ginger to be crushed and squeezed. Mix only the sqeezed liquid in the meat.
- 1kg minced meat.
- 1 table spoon soya sauce
- salt to taste.
Mix thoroughly and keep it for half an hour. The maida dough should be kept at least one hour after kneeding. Prepare momos and steam.
What's momo without "kick-in-the-mouth" dhaniya ko achaar? So, here's its recipe:
Grill tomatoes, red dry chilly to be slightly baked or fried to make it crisp for crushing, green dhania chopped, you may add garlic if you like and crush in khal or blender.

Okay...the funniest part...who remembers the middle-aged guys getting drunk diusai and walking around town? I have the funniest story. A friend of mine told me about one time when she was with her LC pals and walking towards Rink Cinema. There was a guy in front of them swaying from one side to another and in a typical LC fashion she was sniggering at the guy who at one time appeared to be pushing the wall to make way for himself. Regarding darj people being bhut freak...ummm well its must be partly due to da cold weather and mostly due to horror movies inda video parlourz pl bhoot. Sometimes I wonder if Alfred Hitchcock was born in Darj??

Suna...season padkaunu waz like a profession...summer, winter, monsoon, autum woteva..everyone wanted to notice n 2 b noticed in the little town. We were all road inspectors walking everyday from chowkbazar all da way upto the Mall..n back n forth atleast 4 times a day..supprizingly we met the same group of people. Ek choti ta tyo Planters hospital ma sick bhayera janda tyo Moti matron le sodeko ni...What are you looking for on the mall road everyday?..coz I see you go up un down...Kam chaina??..Well I just smiled..but felt like telling her.."Season Padkaudau heene ko ni" Kya season haagi!
Poor buda pakha haru..feel sorry for them. No wonder today they are encouraging their kids to date.

FYI...
There is a Darjeelinge connection in the new cabinet.....sort of. It's more of a Kalimpong connection.....Anuradha Koirala( Anuradha Gurung, maiden name)....Ambika Shrestha(Ambika Pradhan,maiden name) hail from Kalimpong and attended attended St. Joseph's Convent. Now are Assistant Ministers in the new cabinet with Health and Tourism portfolios respectively.

I remember this huge procession and a wonderful time in chowrasta and observatory hill. Anyone remember this as well??

Lifez pretty funny ni?..with so much to do in the present..even much more let to be done
inda future...yet we keep on recalling our past as if we could hv done much more then.

Kalanidhi, I agree if people deliberately talk like that, it does sound weird! I'm sorry it doesn't come naturally to you.
Oh by the way, I think you are lengthening the accent a tad bit more than we would naturally/normally do and I think thats where the problem is. Try it without stressing too much on the aaaaaaaaaa and you may come to like it.
Oh and by the way, some of the words we utilize in Darjeeling only your purkhas in the gau would understand.

Honestly?? I WOULD!! I know I'm crazy but if I can buy a piece of land in a place like Takdah or some place like that I would LOVE to go back! I have always dreamed of opening up a sishu bhavan for the less fortunate who have to beg on the streets. A farm..some orchids...a dish, a landrover. And I'm all set!!!
BUT
Having spent a major portion of my teenage years and then some in Ktm, I wouldn't mind living on the outskirts of the valley or even Sankhuwasaba. :)
Humjayega: Do you know of a house in Darjeeling where poor children could knock on the door and get some free bread?

M niether from chandmari nor a gunda from gaddikhan..its just the fact dat I hv spent the best dayz of ma life as a teenager in darj...got to know some of the best ppl in town...did everything posible the darj way and thus I still carryon the fond memories with me.
Yeah your idea of a ranch in Takdha...sounds perfect theoriticaly...but I do believe that lotsa things hv changed...mostly the mentality of the ppl as a whole...so may be it might prove to be wrong decission inda long run.
M not sure of Ktm either...dunno wot things are like there..But sure your idea to come back n settle gives me the motivation find some ideal location and develop some kinda Real Estate for all those bideshiz who are willing to relocate.Dont worry since M a businessman..I shall look into every detail to see dat you guyz get exactly the same woteva you are getting now. Any interest Please??
Re: House for feeding the poor..well! Hayden hall waz the place were they used to feed the poor..but dat christianity connection was mandatory. But its not a bad idea for ppl living abroad to sponsor some kinda project whereby we could help the poor..without expecting anything in return ofcourse.

Nonetheless Suna has an extensive knowledge of the ChowkBazar n surrounding town areaz...whereby she deserves to be the Mayor of Darjeeling town...agreed too!
The little cottage beside the ambak ko rook..with the winding path surrouded by guras ko treez and the white water stream flowing beneath a small wooden bridge...I too wish I could avail one such place..surely it must be paradize.
Suna tyo..Hayden hall ko mariam....hahahahahah..hola hola..winter ko bhela nightshow ma cheeso posey pachi every ticket holder becomes am moving Gas cylinder...

That last posting by Suna reminded me of the movie "Samjhana" because there's a bhaileni episode in it. That baiscup used to make me so sad. Acting was terrible, but everything else was good. I think it was filmed in Darjeeling ko Kamaan tira. Daaaaaaaami scenery thiyo ni, chiya bagaan ko. And I was madly in love with Tripti at that time. Has anybody watched Samjhana?

Sangey, I watched that movie perhaps a decade ago when it was screened by NTV. Movie ta 1985/86 tira ko ho kyare hoina? It was a pretty sad story. I did not like most of the songs though, too much of Hindi taste. Nepali geet suneko jastai nalagne, huna ta that happens to be the case in most Nepali movies. tyo bhaileni geet pani man parena, does not have the taste of the bhailis I am used to listening to.

Suna...now m confirmed timi thik pani "K" building kai hunu parcha.. ho! ho! malai na dantnus...maile chine! maile Chine!... Kiran Thakuri ko jamana ko manche..hehehe. He also acted in some paly at Bhanu Bhawan..about the Andholan..GNLF N CRP ko encounter..did ya see dat??
But I still think the name of the movie waz something else..not "Kahi andharyo...." Anyway it waz a good movie though...gaddi khan ko scene pani cha ni and I remember tyo Mirik ko bato ma geet n dance sequence.."Harara Barara..duwaang tannu sarara jannu cha hamil lai Darjeeling sahara..."

BTW, I don't know how long you folks have been away from home, tara ahiley ta Batasey Danda ta nikkai ramro po banako cha ta. Beech ma obelisk cha, ani Indian Army Gorkhali ko smarak cha. The lawns are well manicured.
Another impressive place is Japanese Temple / Peace Pagoda, both were very well kept. One morning I was at the Mall Road ko lookout point to view sunrise. Next to me was a small Japanese lady monk with her dhyangro offering prayers to the new day. It was very nice. And I looked up at the Daanda, and a monkey couple were making love on a tree branch. That was nice too... I suppose.
Talking about food, Gorato didi le khashi ko masu ko tarkari chai daami banaunuhudoraicha hai. I am more of a chicken guy myself, tara didi ko khashi ko masu ta miiiiiittthho bhako thiyo... hehehehehe "rambheda" harey...
