Jyaket Syaket Pyants Syants ---------------------------------------- ***Pahila jasto Dashain ko spirit ta chhaina tara pani samjhana bhane mitho chha.*** ---------------- “Bouddha Jane?” Ramesh asked. “Kina?” I wanted to know. “Yasso jyaket syaket pyants syants painchha ki bhanera” Ramesh explained. Dashain was just around the corner. I was standing right in front of the Krishna mandir watching people play Langoor Boorja. I only had roi karai garera magera lyako das rupya tyo pani bhate harule jhimikka garda lagdi sakya the. So, I was just watching Anil, a friend of mine, who was moderately winning. I was just zooming on him for some jitauri. I was confident, “ek rupya mattai paye ni baljhauthe aghiko das”. So, everytime, Anil won I used to scream, “yeah! boorja tebbar tir tir tir…la chher” ignoring “get-the-hell-out-of-here” look the khaalwal was giving me. I was in a mission to get some jitauris and Anil was my only hope then. Being encouraged by the continuous winning, Anil put all his networth in Langoor. Chhidi double, surot tebbar, langoor single…chha goti ma single ma natirne. I just got out of the crowd. What’s the point in staying there anymore? Ek hisab le jitauri napayeni ramrai lagyo. Aafu ni taat, Anile ni taat. Misery loves companion. “Let’s go”, I said to Ramesh. Ramesh out of courtesy asked Anil if he would like to come with us to Bouddha. Infuriated Anil instead of answering by words took his hands straight down to the zipper and was ready to go ahead…We, Ramesh and I, were simply not interested in that Tamasha so we left with a low key laugh. Bhuteshwor bata ooralako mukhai ko Ganesh lai darshan gardai we headed down to dhunge dhara then turned slight right towards dhobikhola and kept on walking. Ramesh was a sauji ko chhora. Potwal nai thiyo. They had a store in our tole. He was also my classmate. “kati gaanth lyachhas?”, I asked him. “panse (500) chha”, he showed me the tiger. “momo khana pani paisa bacha hai”, I said to him. Tauko hallayera hunchha bhanyo. “ke bina ghar banaka ni yaha” he commented looking at the mushrooming houses between dhunge dhara and dhobi khola. I also looked around and agreed with him. Usko mukh bata hwass jaand/raksi la lasun ko gandhha aaira thyo. Crossed dhobikhola jutta fukalera, Japan le banaidya new pool was not there then..Bhatkeko pool matrai thiyo. Tyo pani Shivratri pichhe “Mahadev lai jaado bho bhandai sattari ladai aago laudai garera…pool lyang fyang thiyo. Not just that…pool eka tira thyo..khola arkai tira. Bhyao aba? Anyway, started to walk up the hill towards Chabel bazaar. Ookalo ko euta ghar dekhayera he said, yaha euta khatara kt baschhe yaar..”. I also looked at the house and scanned all the windows, chhat and open spaces to catch a glimpse of that beauty but I saw no taruni. Reached chabel. Bhat khane bittikai hinya…ookalo le ta pet nai chaskiyo. “pet ghochyo yaar, bus chadamna”, I suggested. He agreed. Took a bus to Boudhha. I was looking at the airport when we passed chuchhepati. There was this big plane there. “tyasto plane chadera kahile jaane hola bidesh”, I thought. After passing Chuchhe pati and Tara gaun hotel we reached at Boudhha. Tyo Bouddha ko thoolo dhoka bata chhirera we were hanging around the stupa looking for a store to buy jyaket syaket..pyants syants for Ramesh. I was also walking with him pwal parya khalti liyera. A shop drew our attention. It had some good-looking boots, jackets, and other stuff. But right by that store, there was this BIG crowed. We went on to see what that crowd was for. As we suspected, it was a langoor burza khal. It was big. I mean really big. There were hundreds of rupees on all six symbols neatly printed on leather looking material. Chha goti ko langoor burza. We just watched and enjoyed. There was a police post not that far from there but I guess they didn’t care. I quickly remembered how once afu hari ra bela ma “yeee poolis wala..poolis wala” bhanera euta karauda bhagne bhe ra euta chappal ko looti nai chhinyo. Ma kina bhagya ho ahile samma thaha chhaina. Anyway, I closely watched chidi where the most bets were. Ke parchha …ke parchha…..”police aayo bhane aafu ta tyahi chidi jhyaap hanne ho” I thought. “Paan parchha yaspali”, Ramesh said. Nabhandai paan tebbar. Next time Ramesh predicted Boorja. He was right. He said, “feri ni boorjai parchha”. He was right again. He was amazing. “maile bhe yaspali paan ma rakhthe”, Ramesh said. “Nabhandai paan ta chhaubar”. Ramesh looked at me I looked at Ramesh. Ramesh took out his panse ko note. “Aaja lakki din chha jasto chha hai”, he said and smiled. My heart started to bit faster and faster. I didn’t know when was the last time I saw anyone betting Rs.500 on langoor burza. “jammai?”, I asked. “Waar ki paar”, Ramesh joshiyo. “Paryo bhane talai ni jutta kindinchhu”, he was generous. Aba ta, I really wanted him to win but I didn’t think betteing all five hundred at once was a good idea. I tried to persuade him not to bet all at once. He did not listen. He bet all his money on itta. “khwarlang khwarlang khwarlyang…” goti hallayo ra twak ghoptyayo khelaune le. I guess I was more nerveous than Ramesh. Langoor burza khelaune guy lifted the twak. There were two ittas, “itta dabbal…la tir tir” we screamed. But, unfortunately, there was this one chidi facing tilted goti leaning against paan and also a burja facing goti was on another goti. People, losers!, screamed “khaptiyeko hundaina….dhalkeko ni hudaina”. People started to scream and pushing….feri hanne feri hanne…..the assistant to the khelaune guy shouted. There was a lot of pushing going on and people’s hands were pretty close to the money on khal. I guess they were all trying to protect their bet. It was a near chaos situation there then. As soon as the goti guy put all six gotis in that twak and started to shake, a guy in the crowd got really mad at Ramesh. “Paisa chhunchhas mu**” he shouted at Ramesh and before Ramesh could clarify his position and intention that angry dude le jamayera diyo ek taajan Ramesh ko gala ma. Ramesh must have seen tin tirbhuvan chauda lok cuz he looked pretty scared. I completely forgot my jutta. The guy who boxed Ramesh was a big dude. I didn’t dare hitting him. This fight caused more chaos and confusion and just then before people could normalize the scene someone screamed, “Poolis aayo….poolis aayo”…..sappai ghaaar ghooor bho. Rameshe ko paisa kalle lagyo lagyo!

This writer is able to bring out such vivid emotions and flavors. S/he has very promising literary talents, I suggest that he should try to develop these themes into a short story format. I think this will compare very favorably with Samrat Upadhya's stories. It was such a pleasure to read this...keep it coming! Best wishes to the author, Parakhi!

Samrat upadhaya is down the drain when you're relating this man to him! his dang characters don't even take a turn and stay wherever they start from ,until doomsday, for reals ,until the dang story ends. OK his stories do remind you of those good ol' days but don't u see a certain patern developing time and over again with his so called "sarcasm" to nepalese, perhaps, generalising them as mere bums and slackers? the fact that he got labeled as one of the creative writers in ANA ,i think, had to do with the fact that, he was the one hailing from nepal .may be the only one to have ever done so. unlike deep, his story revolves around the same old issues and you're left questioning yourself ..what's up ?? Is that it?? is there anything more?? more or less like the new movie by M.N shya.... yeah signs... still never ceases to amaze me how his stories hit the stands in barnes and nobles ???? give me a break!!!! deep ji, aba next story ta malai dedicate garnu parcha hai...eetro praise gare pachi!!! chill apple

Deep ji! Wow! I was/am enthralled!!! I am cards-challenged! :( But loved to hang around for the jitauri!!! I used to play "lady luck", get the jitauri and run out to buy titaura and guccha (to my mother's chagrin!)!!! One day, my mother threw out all my gucchas because the neighborhood boys complained that I "jitara bhagoed!" :( The reprimand I got was, it was high time I grew up to be/act like a lady ....and that was the end of my tomboys days....(..and I had never even tried out the dandibiyo and the guleli...and changa flying!!!) :( Nice, memory lane twice revisited!!! :)
