I think Sitara is the most articulate, creative, prolific writer that i've had the honor of reading at sajha. She has the style, the flow, the wit, and the charisma..and to add another dimension..fluidity..it seems as if it just flows..effortlessly. May she go far!!

You do flatter me, I must say. But, the credit goes to the Sajha posters (who are far more eloquent,....than I) from whom I learn everyday.
The Thread life can tie you up in knots or unravel you completely!!!!!! :)

Sitara once again has me convinced...'modesty is the proof that morality is sexy'
and about treading the tightrope thing..She reminds me of couple of lines by bob woodward on Greenspan...'the result was a verbal caution that could me maddening, a series of loose boards and qualifications in sentences that would allow him an exit ramp from nearly everything he said'....something along the line could be said about her...yet my inefficiency..i had to borrow the line...She shall go far !

by the way, sitara, yettika phulayo pachi lets talk about business -- You mentioned in some other thread that you have got to do something with Speech therapy. By the way, I need a serious speech therapy -- like I can never say "Shh", 'Zee" etc... like everytime I go to Mc Donald and ask for Vanilla shake, they just stare at my face -- the other day i went to Mc Donald and ask for shake, this black dude, he stared at me -- for he didn't understand what i said. I tried 4-5 times -- still he didn't get me -- after that i wrote "shake" in a piece of paper -- that dude couldn't even read it -- so i said, alright fine, can i get sprite? -- he said "yup"!!
Do I sound like one of your students???? HELP!!

I have the same problem as SOULFREE. Last time I went to a store and asked in which Isle they keep "Salt", the lady like stared at me as if I was saying "to hell" or something.
A-N-D i couldn't start spelling it for fear that she will misunderstand me further. The American's can't make out my "S" or "H".A-N-D stare at my lips for 10 minutes when I say "H as in Horse". As if they are expecting a horse to leap out from my mouth.
So Sitara, do u have any expertise in this?

hehe!...... Yep, I'm flying HIGH on LIFE!!! a potent mix of oxygen, Good will (from you all) and oh yes, a big dose of ego boosting!!! ;)
For every high there is a low (TAO...) I have 3 options: to burst, deflate or float on cloud nine!!!
Perhaps, I can choose a remedial action and "BOUNCE back" if any of the above strikes! :)
And with Tropical and Soulfree's ashirbad... I can't go wrong ni! :) Thanks!
If you guys are serious, about speech...it is more of accent than anything else!!! The voice, stress and intonation convey much of the meaning but since most of us learned our English in Nepal, we can either adapt (affect...?) an American accent or carry a pen and a pencil!!!
And you know: When I am at Parent-teacher and/ or university conferences , I may not say certain words in a particular way...and I just laugh and say:
"Pardon my third world English... they just ingrained the grammar not the accent!!!"

But there are some sounds some of us can't utter just because the speech mechanisms have not been exposed to such sounds and therefore the flexibility is not there!
eg.
ph for f
sh for s and vice versa
th for t and vice versa
bh for V
r for l and the same....and so on.....!!!
It is not speech defect! and Native english speakers may not be able to rrrrrrrrrrrrroll their rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrs.... say dh, thra..(from Nepali ka, kha, ga)...
Ok enough!!!!! ;)

On those unquenchable accents:
My husband may have the best example. Him, while starting a presentation: "Ok, everyone. Please shit."
There's a standing offer from an ESL professor--at Utah State, I think--to pay $1,000 to anyone who can fool him into thinking that a person who came to the U.S. after age 18 or so is a native speaker. The ability to mimic accents simply cuts off around adolescence.
There's actually some research that says most non-native speakers, if given a choice, would not choose to lose their accents. To be understandable, yes; to sound like a native, no. It's part of identity. Would anyone give up their accent if they had a choice?

Now, since we started taliking about accents, different types of accents, I remember a joke a friend of mine told me in 1993 when I was going through the sentiment of how to improve my accent so that I may sound, not completely,but close to American. Here it is:
Him: what is a person called if he knows many languages?
Me: Multi-lingual
Him: What is a person called if he speaks two languages?
Me: Bi-lingual.
Him: What is a person called if he speaks one language?
Me: I do not know. You tell me!
Him: American.
Also he was very proud of his accent and was from Mexico, spoke in a very thick Spanish accent. He was a Waitor in a good restaurant , made pretty good maney.
To top our conversation off he said " If you speak English with an accent, that means he knows more than one language. So be proud of yoor Lnaguage."
At times when people find hard to understand your sh and s and other words, it is always a good practice to break it into something like " S as Sam and h as horse and so forth. That is what I do mostly over the phone.
The reason- I do fancy I am right- is our tongue is used to with the Dante 'Sa' and Dante 'Tha'. So when you say ' Thank you", we say it with our Dante " tha" ,but if you notice, when and American says 'Then' Or Thank you" s/he will have her tounge between her upper and lower front teeth, I do not know what that is called. I tried but it did not work so prefer to stick with my own dante 'tha', which I pronounce with my tongue touching my front teeth from inside, but not between the lower and upper front teeth.
Also my first year here in the US, I was conversing with an American friend of mine and I said 'SHip' ,and meant it . But he understood as 'Sheep". So I immediatley asked him the correct pronounciation and repeated while he was right there, until I got it right. No this might not be practical at all the times , but the point is whenever it is practical try to paractice and learn, so that you might not sound perfect, but you will get close.
Now for SITARA's witty ness, all I can say is when I was reading a thread not too long ago, I believe she was new then- for which I do beg pardon if I am not right- "I AM INTELLIGENT AND BEAUTIFULL NEPALI GIRL"- I was very much amazed the way she replied to all the guys and girls- Poetic, yet subtle and smart.
Even thought I refrained myself from posting on that thread, but enjoyed it thoroughly. That is when I realized she is gonna go a long way. I am Glad we have someone like her in this forum, and do think ,everyone feels the sameway as I do.

I do have a girl friend from Sweden who speaks English with a Southern accent ((and she came to US when she was 20yrs old....and I tease her by doing the Swedish thang of "ya...I am Iiiiinga...soooooooooooop !!!!(sucking in breath Scandinevian way))!!! Even the Americans are amazed. I should tell her about University of Utah...let's see if she takes the bait.

You are right about the placement of the tongue on producing sounds also the voice is fricative or not. Speech defects are physiological or pathological. Accents don't fall into that category. By the ethical rules of speech therapy, I an not even allowed to influence an Ebonics-speaking child on the "correct" pronunciation of words. However, having to prepare them for Standardized test (mainstream English), puts me into a difficult position of correcting their spellings........ e.g. "dat" and "dem" for "that" and "them".

No Sitara, you have not offended me. Even if you offend, I would not mind. I know some offense are more rewarding than everything else. Once I was telling my friend (may be just my imagination) that if I want a friend, I want one like him, and if I want an enemy, I still want one like him.
Now back to the business. I said I have some complaints. But I realize it was not a proper word for what I had in my mind. Friendly suggestions perhaps. That too does not sound good enough. Anyway, since I consider myself a vocabularily challenged person, take it for what its worth.
In plain words, what I wanted to tell you is that you are all what our friends are saying about you. Besides that, you are now also a popular poster in Sajha. I am myself a No. 1 fan of yours. Being your fan, naturally, we never get enough of you. And you can never think of disappointing us. Here comes my concern. What if you felt this pressure and started to come everywhere out of your sense of obligation to fulfill the expectation of your fan but not necessarily to enjoy yourself ? I know other fellow fans might interpret this as my covert attempt to limit your presence in the threads of certain categories, say my own favorite types (I can feel the oncoming wrath of theirs on me !!), but the truth is that I care about you. And this too, I can not help being sorry when I see a hundred carat diamond being thrown to kill an ant, to partially borrow Biswoji’s phrase. I think I said all. If not, I am vocabularily challenged. Can’t help.
