Weird ... twilight zone ...

Last night there was a useful thread called "Important Immigration Information" that reproduced INS regulations, including the fact that all foreigners in the US, including those with green cards, have to report any change of address to INS within 10 days of their move or risk fines, jail, and even deporation.

This is true. I had also heard it, from a director of International Student Services. And this thread IS important because almost nobody knows about this--especially foreign residents who have no contact with int'l student offices.

Now the thread has disappeared. Arnico, Biswo, and Hyaterica had also responded--but it's nowhere to be found.

San, what gives???

Sally, I must have cursed it!

Dont' know what particular word in my posting caused that, but I was pretty mad about the whole thing!

Sally,
It's still there.
It might have disappeared for couple of minutes while I transferred to the IMMIGRATION usergroup. BUT, it does still show up on the front page. under Imp. Immigration News.

It's not on the Kurakani thread, though. I think it should stay on there so more people would get a chance to see it.

Otherwise the same thing is happening here that has happened with the rule itself--information is compartmentalized and limited with the narrow confines of a specific group, so unless you're looking for it, unless you're connected to the appropriate "link," you can't know about it.

A green-card holder or an int'l student on a valid visa might not feel inclined to pull up the Immigration usergroup. But if they ran into a problem, ignorance of the law would be no defense.

I know the regs that were posted are really long, but I think it's important that they get as wide an exposure as possible. That's a public service that sajha can do very effectively.

I posted a follow up on that thread... now in the user group. Much of the contents of the first 2 postings are proposals, and not yet law.

Arnico.

What I was told by the Int'l Student Services director was that, yes, it was already a law. It just hadn't been enforced. (Sort of like the bit about always carrying your green card, I think. For all I know that's a law, too, but who would do it???)

I'll try to find out more and post the specifics when I get them. May take a few days; I've been home sick :-(
