Guys stay in touch with your school...on dismissal procedures!
Don't panic! children are safe inside the schools. I've been through this with 2 gunmen in our school compound! The staff are vigilant....don't worry!

Don't depend on the radio only!!!

SITARA Posted on 03-Oct-02 11:25 AM

The classes are going on normally!!! There is NO panic among children.

Only the staff and security people have been alerted.... Staff will stay as long as it takes....no child will be allowed to leave the building.

Ma cherie, be very very careful, please ?

Thanks, your posting may have alerted other parents, ones that didnt know.

Well done lass, that was good of you.

Keep yer head down lass, don't take any crazy chances, OK ?
sally Posted on 03-Oct-02 11:30 AM

Sitara, if you're at a school, what's the word? Phone lines are busy. Same with my boss, her kid is in Montgomery Cty. I'm waiting to hear from my school's listserv. Seems like the shooting spree is not particularly school-based but generally in the DC/MD area, so EVERYONE, be safe ...

Suna, are your guys OK? And you??? I'm distracted and worrried, what else to say?

Just yesterday when I brought my son to school he said he was sometimes scared because bad guys might come and get him "like Samantha Runyan." I said there were always adults he knew around and things only come on the news because they almost never happen. How do we talk about this stuff with our kids???

My saasu was here this summer and when she'd hear about the horrible things happening to kids in the US she'd refer to the criminals as the American terrorists, and say the whole world is the same ... yes, teachers killed in the gaons and a bomb at Galaxy .... and then we think we're keeping our kids safe by living here ... meanwhile I'm supposed to concentrate on writing about the Cuban missile crisis and how preemptive strikes from the US would have led to nuclear war ...

Keep safe, all. Post any info if you get it.

Suna Posted on 03-Oct-02 11:33 AM

Sally
am at home so glued to the TV!

The school lines were busy as hell but I kept on calling and they assured me and said that the kids were informed according to their age groups. The high school kids have been told the full efffect of the Code Blue. You should see the roads: they are empty!!!

Yes, good job by you though.
SITARA Posted on 03-Oct-02 11:39 AM

Guys... Everything is fine.....

The reason there is a lockdown is because schools are the most vulnerable areas for this kind of things.

Don't get worried, just be alert! AGAIN...children are safe!!!!!! but the news tends to create panic among parents causing more confusion ...to the point of a stampede!

forewarned is forearmed... but this info is also to let you know NOT to Panic....Just be ready to make detours in case of traffic blocks...
Suna Posted on 03-Oct-02 11:39 AM

Guess what guys!!!!!!!!
SOAPS are ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GODDMIT! WHERE ARE THE PRIORITIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHh
sally Posted on 03-Oct-02 11:42 AM

Phone lines are busy at my son's school. I'm waiting for word on the listserv. It seems like this is a general shooting spree in DC/MD, not a particular school-centered one, so everyone in the area KEEP SAFE.

Suna, I'm worried and distracted, what to say??? How about you?

Just yesterday when I brought my son to the playground he confessed out of the blue that sometimes he felt scared because maybe a bad guy would steal him away like Samantha Runyan, and I said not to worry, adult friends are always around, and besides, things only come on the news because they almost never happen and all those bad guys lived far away. And now this ... How do we talk to our kids???

Teachers murdered in the gaons, a bomb at Galaxy, and then we think we're keeping our kids safe by living here ... this summer my saasu would refer to the people on the news as American atankabadi and say the world was the same everywhere ...

Sitara, if you're at a school, how are kids being talked to about this? Do they know what's going on? I'm wondering how to address this with my son later.
Anyol Posted on 03-Oct-02 11:44 AM

If anybody going to pick up the kids from school, please call them before you go and get the approval from the school. Thank you.
Suna Posted on 03-Oct-02 11:47 AM

hey SITARA
can you clarify this?? They just announced and I hope I heard this right: the school authorities have NOT decided if the children are going to be let out at the usual timing after school.
SITARA Posted on 03-Oct-02 11:56 AM

Just talked to the head of security in our building....and some very panicked parents!

Again...Children are SAFE.... don't panick. It is a normal day inside.

Again, don't panic!
SITARA Posted on 03-Oct-02 11:59 AM

The kids have NOT been told!!! There is no need to create unnecessary panic inside the buildings as well.

Nothing has been decided yet, as far as dismissal! We are trying to err on the side of Safety that is all.
SITARA Posted on 03-Oct-02 12:02 PM

Sally,

How old is your son?
sally Posted on 03-Oct-02 12:04 PM

Got thru to my son's school and they also said that a decision hadn't been made yet. It's times like this I'm really really glad I work so close to the school. Like Sept 11 ... if I have to go get my kid on a moment's notice because they don't decide until, oh, 2:55, I can, but what about people who commute an hour???

Sitara, sheerly for distraction value, where are you sending this from? I'm trying to picture this ... are you kicking the kids off Reader Rabbit to write on sajha? Seriously, do kids know it's a lockdown? How is it being presented, in your school, anyway?
Suna Posted on 03-Oct-02 12:04 PM

Sitara
The older ones in high school have been told. Two of us have been called by our high schoolers asking if we had heard.
sally Posted on 03-Oct-02 12:12 PM

Just got through to my kid's school and a decision hasn't been made there either.

Sitara, he's 6. Maybe it's kind of weird that he remembers the name Samantha Runyan, but that's how he is.
sally Posted on 03-Oct-02 12:15 PM

Sorry for the redundant posts. I'd posted the one, then it didn't appear, so I thought it was just missing in the ether ...
Suna Posted on 03-Oct-02 12:18 PM

feeling better sally?
The press conference is going on.
Secret Service agents are working too ...wonder if that means anything.
SITARA Posted on 03-Oct-02 12:19 PM

To digress a little:

Always alert your children about stranger danger.

One way of saying this: (When a stranger tries to enlist children's help)

- " Strange adults do Not need to get help from children; they can ask other adults!"
- Make your child memorize: telephone #, address, school name,
- Give 911 scenarios starting with emergencies at home: accidents, falls, fire ....then go into burglaries and others....gradually!!!! Be matter of fact about it without the purpose of instilling fear.

About shootings in schools and or around neighborhoods:
Be matter fact:
Say "dangerous things can happen all the time." ("BAD" is not a good qualifier.)
Accidents happen on the roads all the time. (Remember your job as parents is to prepare your child on life skills NOT random happenings!)
Emphasize on noticing things, out of ordinary things, develop reasoning abilities by using day to day happenings, being "careful" is another word.

"Good and Bad" are the worst words to use. focus on actions of people not on the people...this way your child is able to pick up cues of abnormal behaviors of people.

You as parents can't give answers or solutions only give life skills...without instilling fear!
DHUMBASSE (DUMBASS) Posted on 03-Oct-02 12:20 PM

I belive the latest news is that the two of the suspects have been arrested and one is stil at large. he is on the run , so no time to shoot, but considered extremely dangerous
tizzy Posted on 03-Oct-02 12:23 PM

...now...what was THAT all bout....can anyone kindly explain it to me...??
SITARA Posted on 03-Oct-02 12:25 PM

I am on specials/lunch break...sally.

But running in and out of class. No! I don't teach reader rabbits either... ;)

Also, you child need not watch every news on TV...it gets magnified in their very highly impressive mind. Be the censor of the news...process it first and then share it with your child. If the news horrifies you, imagine what it does to your child's mind.
Suna Posted on 03-Oct-02 12:28 PM

SORRY!
Suna Posted on 03-Oct-02 12:32 PM

You were talking about the car jackings last night.
DHUMBASSE (DUMBASS) Posted on 03-Oct-02 12:37 PM

Thank you Suna, that could be it,

at times like this people tend to talk about a whole lot of scary things. when you have your own ears so alert, anything out there is heard. And this is DC. The place I go to get lucnh was full of clerks, secretaries and all other working people and that is what someone said .
I again apologize to everyone for that misguiding post.

San dai, please take that one off from the thread. thanks.

Boooooohhhhhhhooooooooo ( sobbinng)
SITARA Posted on 03-Oct-02 12:43 PM

yes...suna

And thank you all....

Each school has its own policy on informing the older children...according to "Need to Know" basis. Ours don't unless it is absolutely necessary.

Usually school staff are very responsible and in these kind of situations, the media can really mess up stuff by creating confusion and panic. They have a vested interest in that!

BREATHE...meditate on your belly buttons!!! :)

Teach your child not to panic either!!!

some other time I will give tips on how to communicate with your child. "esp. those who say...I did nothing in school!!!! :)
czar Posted on 03-Oct-02 12:48 PM

Ma Cherie,
Don't stop talking, you are soothing jangled nerves, mine included. So long as you keep going it makes people feel better, and their imaginations don't run riot.

Counting on you staying intact.
Suna Posted on 03-Oct-02 12:48 PM

Sitara

I'm sure you weren't asking me to breathe and meditate. hoina??

Being a teacher is one thing but being a parent is another one altogether. I'm sure some of us here know what that is like. Maybe even you do Sitara. There is no meditating nor breathing in times like this. One can't even explain what its like waiting for new news. Its always good to put yourself in the other's shoes and ponder.

I tell my children they have a right to feel how they feel. Everyone does.
SITARA Posted on 03-Oct-02 12:53 PM

Suna...

I am only giving out tips (to Sally esp.) that have always worked in the past.... when I have counselled...in the worse case scenario....

It is up to you to figure out your way.... :)

AS, for my being in a parent's position or NOT; do you really know ANYTHING about me????

:)

And I rest my case!!! Have a wonderful day, parents ! Don't panic, be alert!
Suna Posted on 03-Oct-02 01:00 PM

Sitara
Obviously I do not know you and even IF I did, I would not be referring coyly to your personal life as you have clearly chosen to be just virtual. But through your postings I have come to the conclusion that you have this way of indirectly referring to people and since I am one of the parents here who is YES PANICKING!!!!!! (oh my god! how awful of me, I should be meditating Zennishly hoina? haha..whatever). If you weren't referring to me, please try to be more direct in the future so that such misunderstandings do not happen. Seems like you're practising already w/o my advice: "to SALLY esp."
Suna Posted on 03-Oct-02 01:04 PM

lal, sally call me if you want to. The news have stopped so back to the soaps now. UGH!
Sally, concerned for you and LOST your number as well (sorry) lets hook up and talk guys...
anepalikt Posted on 03-Oct-02 01:11 PM

come to the chat room.
czar Posted on 03-Oct-02 01:19 PM

This is a serious situation and Sitara is doing a public sevice by keeping everyone posted on the situation from within a school, especially how the lockdown operates inside the school.

Intead of being appreciative, we have some over here bickering with her over parenting issues ? People have every right to panic over threats to their children and family. Is this the time/place to be arguing parenting issues ?

Can we all keep our eye on the ball please?

Keep going Sitara, don't stop and just ignore those that haven't got what it takes to appreciate what you are doing.
sally Posted on 03-Oct-02 01:19 PM

Sitara,

I think you made some great points and I really appreciate your posting all this stuff. I've gotten more info from sajha than from my own kid's school or from our listserv, thanks to you starting this thread!

Have to admit I feel a bit offended though ... as if I'm letting my kid watch a lot of TV, when in fact we limit it very strictly, but he does happen to be a bit of a sponge and remembers surprising things for quite a long time ... I'm sure you didn't mean it that way, but as you said about yourself, you really don't know anything about me. I assume this was more-or-less general parenting advice, in which case, yes, I do think it's relevant whether or not you're a parent. Not that anyone who has created an anonymous persona and chooses to maintain it that way needs to answer personal questions straight, and not that it disqualifies advice--far from it! there are great counselors who aren't parents!--but whether or not you’re a parent would say something about ability to empathize, and could be part of a useful conversation.

Just a comment there, take it or leave it, and again, no offense intended because I do appreciate your postings today ... and I'm totally with you on limiting TV!!! Also, great points about the good/bad thing.

Suna, I’ll call you :-)
sally Posted on 03-Oct-02 01:28 PM

Czar, I'm sorry, but who was that aimed at???????? I think we all DO have a right to express our feelings. If Sitara is a counselor I'm sure she's deeply interested in the impact on others of what she says, be it positive or negative or a combination of both.

Guess it's just one of those days.
Suna Posted on 03-Oct-02 01:29 PM

czar
Yes this is a serious situation and we do appreciate getting input from Sitara as she happens to be on the side of fence that we, parents, cannot be at a crucial time like this.

We are all appreciative and do appreciate your (cyberly) concern for her feelings as well. But lets face it, we are REAL parents who have REAL children in the REAL world and at times like this, this cyber crap is just not going to cut it. I am disappointed you call our concerns bickering while Sitara advices pearls of wisdom?

And I think Sitara does very well defending herself.
Tripin Posted on 03-Oct-02 01:31 PM

In this serious situation, do you care more about your kids or posting a thread here?
Seems like if...somebody in your family gets into emergency situation and ...you, insted of calling 911, start posting messages about how the situation is.....

Anyways, very nice that you guys communicating each other in this kind of situation.
Suna Posted on 03-Oct-02 01:33 PM

Tripin,
keeping your acidy comments at bay. LEt me indulge you: all of us are either at work or elsewhere where most of us don't have access to fresh news breaks hence this medium is GREAT!
Hope that answers your questions.
sally Posted on 03-Oct-02 01:36 PM

Tripin, the kids are in school having a normal day, albeit without recess. As parents, we're anxious and distracted, so here we are. We're letting out our tension here rather than doing something absurd like rushing to the school and withdrawing our kids and scaring them half to death. It's not 911. And yes, it IS nice to be able to communicate with people who share an understanding of this strange, tense day ... it's not just here, Tripin, the school listservs are also pretty chock-full of messages ...
SITARA Posted on 03-Oct-02 01:41 PM

Sally,

My post was an answer to your query as a parent. I would /do give this advice to every parent and have done so in the past.

Your 6 yr old has an absorbent mind...which has an incredible capacity for details. The safety issues posted are time tested.... have saved many esp. last year, pre and post 9/11. Yes, I was there waiting till late waiting for parents to pick up their children during the chaos. Also, I was prepared to stay the night if need be.

The "Zen".... breathing, has even worked with teens and preteens during gang fights within the school. Learning to breath is one major skill I teach my pre-schoolers and kindergartners, especially when we have fire drills. It calms them down and quietens their senses so that they can channelize their energy into following their inherent instinct and/or external safety directions.

The meditation was "tongue in cheek"..... !

I hope this answers your questions.

Czar; Thank you...!
Suna Posted on 03-Oct-02 01:46 PM

my child, you still do not learn. Stubborn student that you soon..
You should always start a directive sentence using the pronoun. In this case, use SUNA...
Keep working at it, you will eventually learn. Or better, meditate, you might be able to concentrate and zone in and merit from my advice. You remind me of someone badly imitating YODA.
Tripin Posted on 03-Oct-02 01:48 PM

Sally,
I was not so gratified with your first answer because you could get the same freah(breaking news) from other Internet sources. But, your second answer satisfied me:)
SITARA Posted on 03-Oct-02 01:54 PM

And oh yes Suna;

I HAVE worked with some parents like you too!

:)
sally Posted on 03-Oct-02 01:58 PM

Tripin, what two responses?????

Suna, Imitating YODA, who is? Gain wisdom, we shall! Breathe deep, I will ....

(pant pant pant .... pheeeeeew )

Now carry on I shall. Write about the Cuban Missile Crisis, I must. Nuclear armageddon, ponder I shall. What a day, what a day, it is!

Thanks!!! Fun, that was.
Suna Posted on 03-Oct-02 02:00 PM

NOW we're getting somewhere.
That five minute meditation seems to have worked wonders. :)
And I have worked with some pretty pushy unfeeling counselors myself.
NO THIS IS WHAT YOU MUST DO AND THAT IS HOW YOU MUST FEEL...(of course, not in so many explicit words) :). Leave the explicit part to a parent like me. I do enjoy that liberty :).
Deep Posted on 03-Oct-02 02:02 PM

Deep,
You got that right!! By the way, Sitara was doing live broadcast of these messages from the school. How's the situation now? Kids are SAFE?
czar Posted on 03-Oct-02 02:31 PM

Tripin,
Thank you, the issue here is safety of kids. You seem to have kept your perspective on this.

My concern is otherwise: Sitara's safety and all your children.

I have no intentions of getting into a brawl with any of you here and/or now.
Suna Posted on 03-Oct-02 03:28 PM

Czar I am so glad that you are on the right track as well. I would hate to be in your shoes tho:
Sitara's safety and our children.
Thank God I just have my children's safety to worry about. :0)
The mother hen is resting in her coup...the chicks are home safe and sound under her wings..its getting a little too sticky in here tho.

czar Posted on 03-Oct-02 04:00 PM

I don't appreciate anyone patronizing me.

What an interesting and educational day it has been for me.
SITARA Posted on 03-Oct-02 04:00 PM

Czar ji, Deep ji and Tripin ji,

Thank you for your concern... Yes dismissal is over and everything is fine. All the children have been picked up too. It is a safety procedure we have to take as far as taking risks. And I am home safe... :)

We have a wonderful parent body who, although, very anxious work for/with the school community in times like this. And I appreciate the support we get from them.

Suna,

Working with "pushy" counselors can be difficult especially if behaviour management and behaviour modification has been one of the "prescribed" issues for both parents and children.

I wish you best!
Poonte Posted on 03-Oct-02 04:20 PM

I just turned the CNN on, after having got out of the bed late and finishing about 50 pages of my next week's assignment, and finally have a clue of what you guys are talking about! It's sad.

Hail to the chief for his, and his "gadha" (the Grand Ole donkey) gang, for still opposing the gun control :)
Suna Posted on 03-Oct-02 04:20 PM

And Czar, neither do I!
Sweet words of nothings...dripping with venom....
Poonte Posted on 03-Oct-02 04:26 PM

oooooooops! They are the HATTIS, aren't they? Or GADHAS? I am not even sure...who cares?
SITARA Posted on 03-Oct-02 04:41 PM

Poonte ji!

Hattis! Amen to your first comment!

:)
bhedo Posted on 03-Oct-02 04:59 PM

Whew. Just came back from work. My workplace is approximately in the same area where the guy went on a shooting rampage. On top of that, the place where I work is jampacked with white trucks. Was I nervous or what? And I had to walk in order to get home. If the culprit isn't caught by today, I have decided to take tomorrow off. The guy must be a highly skilled sniper, IMHO.
Desh_Bhakta_Bhattarai Posted on 03-Oct-02 05:14 PM

Why are you guys over reacting? Here in NY, there is a fear of getting shot every day, at school. So, chill out! I am not afraid, why should you all be?
The greatest fear is fear itself --Roosevelt

SITARA Posted on 03-Oct-02 06:28 PM

Desh Bhakta ji...

Good point, do you work in a school too?

Just wondering.
bhedo Posted on 03-Oct-02 06:51 PM

It's very easy to criticize others. Yah, like the DC area isn't known for lawlessness. It's not just New York.
I ALWAYS walk the same route. I always pass Rockville Pike. I have to take the same path tomorrow, the day after, and so on. I am very nervous indeed. They still don't know who the murderers are.
5 people were killed RANDOMLY. And they had done NOTHING wrong. I used to be ambivalent to incidents like these before, but not anymore. I have walked the walk.

The entire neighborhood is nervous, and they of course will be, since the murderers are still on the loose.
SITARA Posted on 03-Oct-02 08:50 PM

Bhedo ji

You are correct in that DC area has its share of violence. Especially, Ward 8 and PG. country too have a notorious reputation for crime.

It is very scary to go through experiences like this. Especially, since schools can be vulnerable targets. The fact remains that there has to be some kind of external as well as internal support for parents and children to get through such trying times. As people operating within the schools we can only try to operate with a cool and rational mind. Any other reaction can expose children and school staff to unimaginable danger.
SITARA Posted on 03-Oct-02 09:08 PM

Please read PG county*
czar Posted on 03-Oct-02 09:37 PM

Bhedo,
My sympathies are with you. At the same time, I urge you to reflect not on the worst case scenarios
Being alert and vigilant pays, always. Think positive, this helps considerably.

I once lived in a country where there were bombings, buses being randomly taken off the road and passengers shot, trains, movie theaters and shopping centers being bombed. Given that there was nothing that I could do about it, I went about doing my thing as best I could.

I rode buses/trains, I went to the movies, I went shopping. Perhaps to the disappointment of some, I survived.

Hang in there, you will be fine we all pray.

Sounds like Nepal, except for the train. India then??
Desh_Bhakta_Bhattarai Posted on 05-Oct-02 07:31 PM

I don't work at school. Well, it could be called a job. I have to go to school at 8:30 am, stay there, listen to instructions, follow directions, return back home at 4:00pm. You might have guessed...I am a student in a New York high school.

SITARA Posted on 05-Oct-02 10:39 PM

Desh_Bhakta_Bhattarai Ji,

You are so young and yet so sensible for your age! You do surpass many... I have had the pleasure to meet! ( a compliment ni hai?)

My good wishes to you!

:)
Desh_Bhakta_Bhattarai Posted on 06-Oct-02 10:12 AM

Thank You very much, Sitara jee. Thank you for your complement. At school, people tend to give disrespect to someone if he/she is interested in some particular subject(such as me, in science, mathematics and politics). However, in Sajha, I get respect, regardless of my age, or interest. Therefore, I would like all Sajha members, esp. Sitara didi, for giving me respect. It is a pleasure of being in the circle of many intellectual people.

~DBB
P.S. I want to apologise to Sitara didi for telling her -- "Star but not a shining star"-- on the Gaijatra thread! You are a new shining star of Sajha.com!
SITARA Posted on 06-Oct-02 11:17 AM

DBB JI

You are not only sensible but gracious too. Suna ma Sugandha!!! ;)

Thanks sire! :)

Thanks again, sitara dee!
~DBB
SITARA Posted on 06-Oct-02 06:57 PM

DBB JI,
you are welcome.

Blac my lovely bug;

Thanks but I don't know what you are referring to... ;)

Personalities...? but ofcourse, I am trained to detect anomalies and dysfunctions! :)
czar Posted on 06-Oct-02 07:12 PM

DBB, you speak of others in your school being 'disrespectful' of your interests in science, math and politics.

Here's my answer to them: fuggeddabout it! Pay no heed to louts whose primary source of intellectual nourishment is MTV.

They are not bad people, merely conditioned to react that way. To study science, math, computers etc. and to excel is to be 'nerdy' and this is 'uncool.' It is, for them. Their brains are at -273 C, the temperature where molecular acitivity ceases ! Mental activity requires the heat level to rise, hence 'uncool.'

Go the science musems, head to Barnes and Nobles and read up on Astronomy and be amazed at the beauty and scale of the universe. Speak to your math teacher about the puzzle of 'pi.'

Ask your student councellor if they have a mentoring program you could take part it. Hang out with those that appreciate your intellect and encourage it. Do things that nourish your mind.

Revel in it my man, some of the worlds richest people are nerds. You could be next one!
czar Posted on 06-Oct-02 07:16 PM

Disclaimer: I claim no reliance on, reference to, or discoure on entropy or related theremodynamic laws. This despite the use of 'heat' and other refernces to it.
Desh_Bhakta_Bhattarai Posted on 06-Oct-02 08:38 PM

Thank You very much, czar jee, for your advice. In fact, I had applied for such programs at my school and my forms are being processed. Thanks again.

Accolades and Criticisms Aside!!
A child was shot in PG County at 8:09. There is no proof that the incidents are linked at all.
bhedo Posted on 07-Oct-02 08:27 AM

I played hookie from work today for not wanting to be another victim to be felled by that sniper. Life sux these days in MD. Another person shot. He's in critical condition. They still don't know if the incidents are linked.
bhedo Posted on 07-Oct-02 08:31 AM

Huhhhh. Another shooting in the Walmart area?
Suna Posted on 07-Oct-02 08:32 AM

Suna are they connected? have they said anything yet? Bhedo, maybe you can be our live broadcaster fromm home today... please fill us in.
Poonte Posted on 07-Oct-02 08:42 AM

I just pray all my friends, cyber or otherwise, will be spared from this madness...jai shree pashupati nath!
Suna Posted on 07-Oct-02 08:44 AM

my fellow drinkers: checked mail today as yet??
bhedo Posted on 07-Oct-02 09:04 AM

At this point, we can't tell whether the shooting at school is connected or not. BUT IMHO, it's connected. The boy got shot in the stomach, I think. He's bleeding profusely, say the doctors.

Was my decision to skip work wise?
Suna Posted on 07-Oct-02 09:11 AM

CODE BLUE in Montgomery County!
Biruwa Posted on 07-Oct-02 10:03 AM

The latest updates are:

A teenager at Tasker School was shot twice and is in critical condition. Parents of only Tasker School are asked to take their children home since it is a crime scene.

All other School Children are to remain in their School and those schools have been locked down for the day. Meaning Children will not be allowed to go out! Parents are requested to leave their Children IN SCHOOL.
SITARA Posted on 07-Oct-02 11:07 AM

Thank You Biruwa...

Tasker school neighborhood is the next neighborhood from my school.

Everything is fine so far.
sally Posted on 07-Oct-02 11:11 AM

From my son's school's listserv:

DCPS has canceled all outdoor activities at schools and asked the police to
increase police patrols at school. I have no XX-specific information and no information yet as to school dimissal procedures.

##

Meanwhile, we should remember that this does not seem to be targeted specifically at schools. The modus operandi of the shooter has been to pick a public place with a clear field of vision and few witnesses, and target a lone victim. Not in the latest case, though; that was a kid with his mom.

Don't think I'll enjoy my grocery shopping and trip to the gas station much today. Last night there were helicopters overhead so constantly that I hoped they were chasing that guy and about to catch him. Let's hope that happens soon.
anepalikt Posted on 07-Oct-02 11:25 AM

I hope they catch them too, Sally. Who are these people? It is thoroughly senseless. I hope they find them soon. Keep your chin up, folks, and be safe.
SITARA Posted on 07-Oct-02 05:15 PM

Anepalikt;

Thank you for your good wishes. The shooting was very close.... this time uncomfortably close. We were all super locked in......... Dismissal was done under rigid scrutiny. I was a "little" worried........ I was under a lot of stress because...the first dismissal done was for my preschoolers (3yr/4yr olds).

But things were ok...again!
