Yes, please always feel free to disagree with my postings. I do NOT believe that only I have the monopoly on the truth (however defined) or that I know everything or even that I am always right. That's because I am often amazed by how often I am wrong about a lot of things and that, despite my continuing efforts, how little I really know about a lot of things. Really. But my belief is that that's no reason not to keep on learning. And so, my views -- posted publicly in my own name -- are always OPEN to challenges/disagreements/attacks and better ideas from you and others. My deep-held conviction is that it's only by arguing together, by reasoning together, by allowing dissent and disagreements in our conversations/discussions that we are going to foster a culture of lively debate and learn new ideas and thoughts from one another. Sure, sometimes, especially with anonymous postings, things could turn personally nasty too. But, experience has taught me that that's an inevitable, small price to pay for the larger, more positive benefits of OPEN and FREE public discussions. >IT IS WRONG if the event is just another publicity stunt. My concern is that as long as there are no force/coercion and illegality involved, I could care less what the purpose of the this beauty contest is. Sure, say, you, I and others have every right to be OFFENDED/DISTURBED by the fact that the organizers may be using the contest for some, let's say, publicity stunt. But our taking offense or being disturbed about the whole thing does NOT make it fundamentally wrong for them to hold the contest. I mean, we can raise our concerns in the strongest possible terms, but ultimately, it's up to the organizers and/or financiers to decide for themselves how or why they want to do the beauty contest in the first place. >its alright if its a part of the whole package of nepali >convention, and a new event which justifies itself, but just to >hold it to create some buzz is totally another thing. and i had >hoped that was not the case. Maybe the whole idea of holding a beauty contest shows how desperate or eager the organizers are to attract young Nepali men and women. oohi ashu

well said ashu ji. you sure have a way with words. :0) by the way, aawaaz is looking for regular columnists. we have two fortnightly contributors till now and would be great to have more. there have been real good discussions in this board. if ashu ji, or any one else with a passion for writing and an urge for expressing oneself is interested in being a part of the e-zine, you are more than welcome. do contact aawaaz at columnists@aawaaz.cjb.net . it wont be hard work; just an obligation of a minimum of two articles per month which shouldnt be that great a task for regular writers. its quite a good opportunity to express youself, and be a part of aawaaz : the nepalese voice on the internet. or you can just send your articles to aawaaz without the obligation of writing as a columnist, as it suits you time and interest. regards, moderator, aawaaz.
