Does anyone know how HIV/AIDS/STD information is passed out to sex workers in Kathmandu? Do a group of outreach workers go to Brothels/ Massage Parlours/ Dance resturants and pass informatin there? How are these women being reached? I already sent out an email to organizations in Nepal, in the meanwhile any input would help . Thanks.

As far as I know, there is no definite system in place.First, there is no proper data about brothels. The more scary thought is the girls (HIV positives, sent back from Bambay) spreading it in our villages.
Most of us are aware of the deadly combination of TB and AIDS. TB is already rampant in our country.Once AIDS gets a foothold, this in combination with our Maoist problem will probably result in negative population growth.
Remember, all of these affect our youths in prime!

Neali Kanchi:

The best way to reach out to (mainly) female sex workers here in Nepal is if you go through one of the major INGOs here in Nepal and their Partner NGO (PNGO) mainly based in Mid and Far Western Regions of Nepal. Save the Childen US has just completed their HIV Prevention Project and recently conducted an evaluation. They work with a group called SEEAP based in Nepalgunj that has done some extraordinary work in that part of the country. FHI is also working with Save the Children US and its PNGOS in a new project called HIMF or Highway Inititative for Mid and Far Western Regions of Nepal. So you may want to contact the SCUS office in Maharajgunj directly.

I believe that their (SCUS's) URL is www.savechildren.org.np.

Good Luck............

For good reasons, you can visit the following organizations on how to reach the sex workers and their clients.
1. "Trinetra Community Development Foundation Nepal", Gaindakot, Nawalparasi
Their working area is Nawalparasi district

2. "Women Acting Together for Change, WATCH", Butwal, Rupandehi
Their working area is Rupandehi district

3. "General Welfare Pratisthan", Hetaunda, Makawanpur
They work extensively in various districts in Narayani and Janakpur zone.

4. "Amda Hostpital", Damak, Jhapa
They workin Jhapa, Sunsari, Morang.

5. "Life Saving and Life Giving Society", Gyaneshwor, Kathmandu
They work basically in Kathmandu and their role is more of support to the above organizations. But they have programs for IDUs and others.

6. Save the Children Programs to the west of Rupandehi..... GWP again works there.

These above organizations work extensively on outreach education and counseling for sex workers and their clients towards changing their risk behaviour.

New Era does Behavioral Surveillance Survey every two years. They interview the sex workers and clients and get their BSS report.

USAID has large share of expenses for STD/HIV/AIDS related programs.
Family Health International funds most of the above mentioned organizations. They have different components including media production and so on..... Just try to contact Family Health International office in Kathmandu.

There are few other organizations who work inside Kathmandu valley. You can trace their contacts from the above mentioned organizations. I hope this helps you to focus your search....

For better or worse, HIV/AIDS -- and anything related to it in any way -- is a "growth business" (broadly defined) in Nepal, in terms of donor- and NGO-involvement.

Millions of dollars have poured into the country in the last one year alone to support work (by NGOs and so on) in this area.

These days, actresses and models such as Karishma Manandhar, Kala Subba and so on model -- on large street-side billboards -- as Good Samaritans urging kindness toward
HIV/AIDS patients.
