MUMBAI: Actor Salman Khan was grilled on Tuesday over the ownership of the Toyota Landcruiser which was involved in the accident that killed one person and injured four others on September 28.
The actor, arrested for culpable homicide not amounting to murder and remanded to police custody for three days on Monday, was brought to the crime branch headquarters at Crawford Market from Santa Cruz police station late on Monday night.
According to the police, Salman’s transfer to the crime branch lock-up was for security reasons and also to “facilitate investigations’’. The police said the investigations in this case will be handled by the Bandra police and not crime branch officials. The police questioned Salman on the mode of payment made for the purchase of Landcruiser and other details about the place of purchase, which the actor was unable to answer.
A senior police officer said if the car was found to be “benami’’, then it would open a whole new “Pandora’s box’’. The police could slap an additional charge against Salman for owning a benami property, he said. He added that the actor is also likely to be questioned on the possibility of the underworld being involved in the purchase of the vehicle. “We will also have to seek deatils about the vehicle from the port authorities since the car was imported,’’ the officer said.
Salman had told the police that the car belonged to Mohammed Abdul Rahim who had homes in Mahim and Kerala. However, the police has failed to trace Rahim so far and the addresses provided by the actor have also turned out to be a farce.
Police sources said the actor is being treated like an ordinary inmate. No visitors are allowed to meet him except his lawyer. Salman, who is lodged in a separate cell, has created quite an excitement in the building which houses 11 other inmates.
On his first day in custody, the actor brushed his teeth with his fingers, had ‘cutting chai’ (half a cup tea) at 11 a.m. and later had lunch consisting of two chappatis, rice and watery dal. Sources said the actor spent most of his time pacing around the cell in silence.
