Here goes sanskrit sloka for tika blessings "Aayu Dronasute, Shreeyam Dashrathe, shatrukshayam Raghave! Aishworyam Nahushe, gatischa pavane, manamcha Duryodhane! Danam Sooryasute balam Haladhare satyam cha Kuntisute! Bigyane Bidure bhavantu bhavatam kirtischa Narayane!," This literally means "May you have the longevity of Drona's son Ashwotthama, riches of Dasharath, power of Raghav or Rama to finish enemy, glory and property of Nahush, swiftness of air, dignity of Duryodhana, generosity of Soorya's son Karna, strength of Haladhar or Bala Ram, truthfulness of Kunti's son Yudhisthir, knowledge and wisdom of Bidur and name and fame of Narayan." Thanks Sucharya-ji, very useful and timely!! Aba eklai bhaye pani ghokera falaknu parla! But, who is Nahush? And is Duryodhan really known for dignity? ----- On another note, people might find this piece by Surendra KC (a Nepali historian who has done a PhD in Nepal's Communist movement) in the latest issue of Nepal magazine of some interest...a difficult and incoherent read though! Is Dashain a Hindu festival or Nepali? by Surendra KC. http://www.kantipuronline.com/Nepal/Nepalmag.htm Click on "Itihaas ra Anubhuti" A useful ethno-religious piece relevant for our multi-ethnic, multi-religious nation...also the cover of that magazine has one of the most graceful and elegant photos of any Nepali I have seen in a long time.

Don't know if Sucharyaji will agree with this. But contrary to general (mis)conception of Duryodhana with his "epic" vices, he did one thing that has earned him the dignity that the shloka cited above confers on him. At Hastinapur, Karna is dismissed and derided by the Pandavas as a low caste "saarathi's"(charioteer) son and therefore ill-fitting to participate in the activities (I forget what they were). Kunti is unable to claim him as her offspring and bestow on him the royal title that he rightfully deserves (we all know why!). It is at this fragile and critical moment that Duryodhana declares Karna not only a cherished Mitra, but also bequeaths a title and a share of his kingdom to him. And the rest is history, or mythology--take your pick! :) This act of benevolence by Duryodhana exalts him as a man of dignity--flawed certainly, but redeemed nevertheless. Of course, friendship may not be as valued today, but in the time of the Mahabharata and what is called the "Epic" age, it was the most esteemed of relationships. Maanamche Duryodhane speaks resoundingly! Happy Dashain to everyone! In peace.

Here is some information about king nahush. How did I know? Well, I goooogled and found this site: http://www.gyan.org/yadavhist.html King Nahush The prince of King Ayu. He married queen Vraja ( Political Bharat B.C., Raghunath Kali). They had six sons, Princes Yati, Yayati, Samati, Ayati, Viyati and Kriti along with a Princess, Ruchi, who later married the son of Chayavan and Sukanya, Aapnvan. In the 10th war with Devasurs, King Indra killed the Trishira bramhin. He was condemned for killing a bramhin and as a result, Indra escaped heaven and took hiding in an unknown place. During his absense, the kings of heaven chose King Nahush to take care of their kingdom. Unfortunately, one day, King Nahush got attracted towards Indra's queen, Sachi ( Indrani ) and in a rush to reach her, ordered the Bramhins to take his paliki to Sachi. This request infuriated the bramhins since they cursed the King and got him removed from his position as the ruler by requesting other kings of heaven.

I have seen this shlok in another form whereit goes " Saryam Shantanave balama haldhare.........instead of " Dannam Saryasute " . Both are in use though. As for the Reason Duryodhan and nahush's names are included in the sholk, there are different opinions by different people. Some opine that Duryodhan's name even should not be there as he was considered evil in the whole story of mahabharat. So in a time so auspicious, shlok supposedely so pious, the name of Duryodahn should not be there. As to the question of why Nahush and Why Duryodhan? No solid answer can be provided, for , as stated above, different people opine differently. Mannacha Duryodhane, the only meaning that could yield, in a through research ,is because of his EGO, how EGOcentirc he was. Nepalima Bhanda " Mai hun, Malai Matra, Maile pahila paunu parcha, mero karan Mero bhaiharu, Mero pariwar, etc. In other words "DAMBHI " . Does not sound good, does it? When Indra was in hiding , due to the fear of Brittashur, the Indralok was without Indra. Nahush was an empereor here on the Earth , As it was the ritual that the throne should never be empty, for two days Nahush was the king that became Indra. During his days as Indra, He made the Saptarishi's carry him in a " Palki"( I do not know the english name of it). So the Saptarishi's got mad at him and cursed at him because of his stupidity, to become a Python. That Python later was again returned to his Nahush form as Shree krishan touched him, during a childhood play, and returned to Swarga. Then why his 'eaishwarya', why was he selected to replace Indra for those two days, he was a great emperor of that time.

sucharya ji, I admire you for posting this aashirwad. Aashirwad is a aashirwad when it is given with genuine feeling and the exact wording don't matter much. But the version with which I have been aquainted is what DHUMBASSE (DUMBASS) is suggesting. Saryam Shantanave balam Haladhare satyam cha Kuntisute! Mr. Paschim, manancha duryodhane means that he received difference in treatment because of his status as the crown prince of a powerful country (and kauravs were the most powerful clan) at that time in history! The meaning of the slok is: May you be "chiranjivi" (like Aaswosthama), Your fame equivalent to Dashrath, May you be able to destroy your ememies ! Richness equivalent to nahus, Speed that of wind (father of Hanuman!), Difference that of Durodhyan. Calm as the Sun, Strength as Balaram (brother of Krishna), May you be truthful as Yudhirsthir. Knowledgeable as Bidur, recognition of your Work as equivalent of Narayan (Bishnu!)

BIruwa , "Mr. Paschim, manancha duryodhan means that he received difference in treatment because of his status as the crown prince of a powerful country (and kauravs were the most powerful clan) at that time in history! " You are right about what you said above, but just a little note, Duryodhan not just recieved the treatment thar you mentioned above, but also DEMANDED the treatement if it was going the other way, for, he believed he was the sole heir of the dynasty and , that was the truth.

Pahila phulna ta dim Paschim lai..ani falne ta chhadai chha ni. *** Yeah, I also used to think why Duryodhan? I really haven't read/heard much about Nahush except that he was a great king and also was Indra for a short period of time. Let's come back to Duryodhan (D)...no! I don't mean Democrat ;-) Anyway, why was D not a rightful heir to Hastinapur throne? Dhritarastra would've been the king had he not been a blind. Pandu only ruled the kingdom as a representative of the king not as the king. Later when Pandu went away for hunting, Dhritarastra became the representative of the representative of the thore of which he in fact was the rightful heir. Prince D was King Dhitarastra's son. He should've the king had Bidur not interfered with "merit" stuff to promote Kunti putra. Pandavs were just Kunti putra not Pandu putra. However, as I mentioned above prince D was King Dhritarastra's first son. He should've been the crown prince. Palace conspiracy lead by Bidur played a big role in keeping price D out of the throne. That's why he was bitter towards Bidur and ganya manya. Palace made him rebellious. Nobody, really, liked price D except Karna. Prince D and Karna were amazingly loyal to each other. We know, Duryodhan was killed by Bhim using an illegal tackle as directed by Krishna. Karna was also killed when he was trying to fix a wheel of his charriot. It was krishna again who asked hesitating Arjun to attack a weaponless "karna" from behind. Dharmaraj lied to have his teacher Dronacharya killed......So, Pandavs were also no "swatchha chabi" bhaka mahodayas. Ahile bha bhe mantri ni huna na paune!

So, my point is prince D ko manhani bha thyo...our shlokas did a damage control and gave his due after death "maranoparanta". :-)
