Police seek to arrest Jana Astha editor KOL Report KATHMANDU, Oct 15 – Police say they are searching for the editor of Jana Astha week newspaper on charges of possible blackmail that led to actress Shrisha Karki to take her own life. The District Police Office Kathmandu said they were searching for Jana Astha editor for further investigation after Association of Cine Artistes pressed charges and urged detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding Karki’s death. Shrisha Karki committed suicide by hanging herself at her resident in Chabahil area yesterday, six days after Jana Astha published her nude pictures and alleged her of being involved in sex trade. Chief of Valley Police Office Tapendra Dhoj Hamal said the whereabouts of the editor were unknown at present. Police said they believed the newspaper was involved in blackmailing Karki. Karki’s family meanwhile, have alleged that the news and picture was published in Jana Astha after Karki and the editor of Jana Astha could not agree on "certain issue." (rk)

It's fair to say that -- in Nepal - as a group, the sleaziest, the slimiest, the most lecherous, the khattam, the jhoorest, the least creative, and the most unprofessional journalists are those who cover nothing but Nepali cinema and write stories about Nepali movie actors and actresses. These journalists are often NOT interested in advancing the level fo debates/discussions surrounding the state of cinema in Nepal as such. They are interested only in settling scores with actors (sometimes) and actresses (often) who have miffed/ignored/spurned them in a any way. These slimeballs go to any length to harrass, especally young and vulnerable actresses . . . the society at large too ends up doing "khucching" to these young actresses who often seem to have entered Nepali film-dom from small towns ( such as Butwal, Bhairawa, etc) and villages (Urlabari, Bayarban etc) across Nepal. If the state of commercial Nepali cinema is khattam and depressing on ALL fronts, then the state of cinema-journalism, as it were, is jhan khattam and awful. The 'mainstream' patrakars consider themselves too "way above" to be covering the state of Nepali cinema. Nepal's few media-analysts too consider 'cine-journalism' to be NOT their cup of tea. All this lack of peer-scrutiny has led the state of cine-journalism to a shallow, voyeuristic and even damaging level. If Karki's death can be legally -- and beyond a shadow of doubt - linked to what the newspaper published last week, then the editor/publisher should be thrown to jail for years. oohi ashu ktm, nepal

It seems highly likely that Karki's death was due, to a large part,to the Jana Astha report. The report, see the link above, if anything, was of slanderously harassing nature. [Some people can withstand such media onslaugh; most cannot, and some even commit suicide.] I am curious to see how Karki's death would be viewed by Nepal's feminist leaders . . . by the likes of, to cite a few names, Shanta Thapliya, Sapana Malla, Bandana Rana, Prabha Thacker and so on and on. And I say that in all sincerity. I am curious as to their response because the circumstances surrounding Karki's death and even the profession of Karki do NOT fit neatly and tidily within the dominant, if cliched, "NGO and Gender" paradigm that is so uncreatively common -- thanks to the donor dollars-- in Nepal. Or, should Karkis death be an issue ONLY for the Nepal Cine-Artists Sangh? oohi ashu ktm, nepal

Kalankisthan: jan aastha ma diya thyo re... hehehe the way you used "HEHEHE" in this issue, is disgusting with your poor mentality. Shame on you. You must be a regular fan of shameless JanaAstha. Did you read the article? How shameful they are? Tomorrow morning you mom might be talking to your neighbour and JanaAstha might be reporting that your Mom has love affairs with him. The reporting is of that quality, and it fits peoples like Kalankisthan.
