I got one PDF document.
I can not edit it.
How can I edit that PDF document.

Thank you.

Pdf files cannot be 'edited' in that one cannot add or delete its contents. If a pdf document has form fillable fields then one can only add to the fields.

Normally, publishers/authors create a document using different programs to create the various elements of it. Such as Corel for the graphics, Photoshop for the pictures, Ms Word for the text and then do the final layout in a Desktop Publishing (DTP) software such as Frame Maker or even MS Publisher these days.

This document is then converted to pdf format using Adobe Distiller or Writer, both of which are part of the Adobe Writer software, which retails about $ 250 - 300. Be advised though, when the document is converted to pdf format, the creators put in protection that prevents editing and sometimes extraction of the contents.

Your best bet is to print the document and then scan it. Use OCR (optical character recognition) software to convert it to Word, Excel of whatever format you require.

Even the least expensive scanners are bundled with free OCR software. They may not be very good, but it will suffice in a pinch.

If not, Kinko's can do the job for you. Or, if you are the do-it-yourself types, uses their scanners then have a blast!!

Good luck !

er..lecture over. class dismissed. :)

Don't waste your time on printing it and scanning it again. If you know how to do "screen print" to a graphics file output. Or else, you can use PaintShop Pro like softwares, they have "CAPTURE or CATCH" commands and you can capture the screen as image and send it to OCR programs. Screen capture is better than scanner, because it retains original alignment and cleanliness.

Here's another option.
There will be a selection for Text ( T ) and Graphics (adjacent to T) in the acrobat reader. Open up your pdf and copy whatever sections/graphics you need and create your own Word doc out of it.
This way you can have all you need and add more as well.

Have your way.

I like Hard's idea. Copy your text from PDF and copy into word, edit it. If you have Adobe Acrobat Package (not just reader), then you can create PDF out of that word file.

Good detail Czar.

goto following site
http://wheel.compose.cs.cmu.edu:8001/cgi-bin/browse

go on document conversion link, you can convert pdf into word file and edit.
however it takes 4-5 minutes to convert.
you can find a long list of formats that you can convert vice versa.

cheers

Ktmite, excellent link ! Thanks.

Hard_, your idea work marvellously !

Just keep in mind that document security features can prevent extraction or even prevent printing. Most don't bother with this unless its a legal or financial record.

Some great ideas presented by the posters !

Hard jyu,
Thats exactly the way I do it.

Do I have to answer now?
Nixon Posted on 17-Oct-02 10:44 PM

Copy and paste works only if the PDF file's owner who created it had set all securities options public. As you know, if you set all security to only Read only mode, then, you can not select even single character or words, in that case, use the method I supplied in my earlier posting.
