With dismay, I noticed a tirade against our present constitution by Dr Upendra Devkota in today's Kantipur. It is surprising that Dr Sahib shares the contempt of his fellow Gorkhali Devkota Rajeshwar Devkota (almost in the same wording) against the present constitution. Another major question is "Don't our ministers take oath to respect our constitution?" If so, Dr Sahib failed to discharge his job properly in the first week of his tenure.

Not that I expected something better. You don't expect a venomous snake to give birth to a benign peacock. The formation of this council of ministers was a very unconstitutional act, and so we can't expect its members to pay allegiance to this constitution. Dr Devkota who actively helped his brother in his election campaign in Gorkha years ago only to see his brother getting less than three thousands votes even probably shares the same disdain for popular votes that his one time classmate Dr Baburam Bhattarai shares. So, it is natural for him to express disdain for (elected) 'netaa' and 'constitution'.

Another illustrious member of this council of ministers, Gore Bdr Khapangi, is worth mentioning. This maverick unsuccessful wedge driver between different communities of Nepal accepted Tikaa this time. Consistency seems to be such a scarce quality, avarice and ambition seem to be such an inviolable credo in this government that Khapangi became willing to submit all his political capital for a berth in the council of ministers. Now, like a recorded baby doll, he speaks someone else's voice perfectly (or may be he adopted someone else's voice.) Long before, a friend of mine, Indra Jeet Lama, now a highschool teacher in one of the famous Kathmandu highschools, had remarked this with me, "They are asking me not to celebrate what I have been celebrating since long just to fulfill their personal aspiration."

"To be feared is better than to be loved" Machiavelly once wrote. King Gyanendra seems to have adopted that motto. He had a golden chance to protect the constitution, to respect supremacy of people, and to continue the tradition his brother had started, but he failed. He failed to gauge the grandeur of popular vote, and conscripted a riffraff posse of midgets and puppets to intimidate and invalidate the force of popular mandate. However, history is strewn with irrefutable proofs that the day people start questioning, the king will be the one who is answerable to all the mistakes, and follies of even his adjutants .

He also said that "The constitution is just a piece of paper written by 2-3 people in front of the King ..." in today's KTM Post http://www.kantipuronline.com/kpost_html/kp_frontpg.htm#Minister%20pledges%20to%20treat%20patients.

It is really hard to believe that the King and cabinet are serious about the constituiton.

Kursi is the most important in life! This philosophy embraced by our multi-party netas has provided the king with an excuse to override the constitution even though there was no threat for his kursi. He exploited the situation to decorate his kursi with all powers he could imagine. And out intelligent dactar shaheb is defeated by dhanustankar (tetanus)! Who cares and cures the poor?

Nixonji,

I don't consider Madhav Nepal or anyone else 'my' netaa. I don't defend what they say. But I do care about the legitimacy of those people who are popularly elected, and it bothers me a lot when people behave in a very irresponsible way especially when they are occupying public office.

Orionji and Satyaji, I share your view and concern. In fact, I read somewhere a reply of one of the senior ministers to a journalist, " I am responsible to the king and the people." Our ministers can't proudly say that they are responsible to the people, and only people! To tell the truth, I don't even believe Mr Chanda selected these ministers. Probably he even doesn't know some of them.

Mr Chanda was given the name of other 8 ministers when he was offered the post of PM. All 9 people at one time, they took oath together later.
