Hi everybody:
I am a Kathmanud Post staffer, currently at New York University in New York. I am surprised that no organization (ones that I know) have any data on Nepalis in the US - and guessestimates vary from a couple of thosuand to 25,000 (for the Tri-state - NY, NJ and Connecticut put together). Would appreciate any suggestions, any data...say no. of Nepali students in Boston, no. of restaurant helps in Wasinington DC, profiles of software experts in Silicon Valley...Anything on Nepalis in US.
Also, I am currently working on an article on Section 245(i). Would really appreciate any information on Nepalis applying for green card on your part of the US...

Greetings,
First of all, let me welcome our new member Mr. Akhilesh Upadhyay to the group. I hope he will educate, inform and entertain all of us with his postings.
Now, regarding the no. of nepalese in the US, I think the official no. is somewhere between 25,000-40,000, mostly in NY, DC, MD and VA. As far as I know the no. of nepalis in California is also very significant.(For example, San Francisco, where there's a big nepali community).

Hi Akhilesh,
A good cyber-friend of mine, Kanhaiya Vaidya is a
Nepali-American demographer in Portland,
Oregon. He works for the US government there.
In the past, he had suppplied the numbers
to me when I needed them for some research.
Kanhaiya would be an excellent source of info.
I don't have his email address handy just
right now, but I guess you can locate it
by visiting the web site of Nepali community
in Oregon or Washington.

Kanhaiya Vaidya, at the last US census (1990), had put the figure of Nepalis to be around 10,000.
